Iron ChIF: Pilot Episode (Audience Commentary)

Welcome, eager audience member. You, too, are part of the show!

This thread is for audience commentary on the pilot episode of Iron ChIF. If you’d like to cheer, crack jokes, make observations or ask questions, please do! I’ll be monitoring this thread and bringing relevant questions and comments to the attention of the judges and technical advisor.

Keep an eye out for these key dates:

  • Sun Nov 09 – development period begins
  • Fri Nov 14 – development period ends, finished games released for play
  • Sun Nov 16 – judges’ scoring announced, audience voting begins
  • Tue Nov 18 – audience voting ends, winner declared

That’s right! Unlike the TV show, for Iron ChIF your votes will determine which competing chef prevails. The judges’s scoring will be used only as a tiebreaker in the event that the audience vote results in a tie.

If you haven’t yet signed up as an official Taster, you can still do so via the group page. Just click “Join” at top right, and you’ll be able to use the Taster flair to show your support.

And Parchment’s TADS 3 support still isn’t great…

As first “forchettata” (uh, I can’t find a good english term…) is very palatable to me, about Galatea and the problem of NPC and love relationship, both being key element in my major WIP.

I’m not buying his argumentation on switching from T3 TO i7/10, because I’m firmly convinced that offline 'terps is a very valid medium for parser IF, and both language has excellent offline 'terps and has their strenght points, and what should be the first step after deciding the plot and narrative ought to be the selection of the IF language (and library) most appropriate for said plot & narrative. (side point, for limited parser narrative, I think that ALAN should be the ideal language because is damn easy to limit the parser…)

but for now I’ll wait for the main dish, to be delivered next week

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

Also, if he’s thinking in terms of

I don’t think I7 was the best choice possible at the time for portability of Z-machine games compared to I6.

I actually went on a tiny dive to figure out a good English translation. Most internet dictionaries render it as “forkful”, and it would make sense, as (if my research is correct) forchetta (noun, feminine) means a fork. However, I’m not sure if “forkful” is a common enough English word; “spoonful” would perhaps be more common. Both refer to the amount of food a particular utensil can hold, though it seems like through some metaphorical associations, “spoonful” remains more popular. Could it be because of a higher status of a fork in Italian culture? I have no idea.

All the best from Poland,
Naarel

PS: looking forward to all that’s going to be cooked for Iron ChIF, seems interesting

It’s surely not a coincidence that Iron Chef Dialog published their Automap extension less than 24 hours ago. Is this an implied challenge to @Pacian to use it against them?

I love the format so far. Very playful and engaging. And the interview was interesting!

Picking brevity as a key skill is an interesting observation given how historically medium constraints also pushed towards brevity.

Surprised there’s no comparing games to mousses.

I’m now imagining something like (I must apologise that Draconis has been reduced in my mind to “Something to do with Hittites?!”)

EDIT: I guess this is more of a parody of subject matter than style, but same difference.

When I finally read the plaque on the installation/wishing well at my library the other day, I discovered it has a Sumerian theme. Draconis immediately teleported into my brain.

Presumably this leaves a gap for large projects capable of fitting on an 8-bit machine.

larger dialog projects will run surprisingly well on C64 (via the Aa-machine 6502 interpreter). but not on the others. maybe someday there will be more interpreters out there.

I’m staying out of this thread in general, but I feel compelled to say one thing:

You absolutely shouldn’t apologize for this. One of my WIPs has a puzzle involving following an ancient Hittite recipe to bake iyatti bread. I’m not beating the allegations here.

Is there a difference in function between this thread and Iron ChIF: Pilot Episode (Audience Commentary)?

Mod edit: This post has been moved. The original thread referred to is Iron ChIF: Pilot Episode (Pacian vs. Draconis, using Dialog) .

Yes. The show occurs in this topic and commentary upon it goes on the other topic. This is to keep this topic 100% The Show for ease of reading at any time without any diversions.
