Introducing Ourselves

Hey everyone! I’m Finchie (she/her). I’m 22 and live in the PNW. I haven’t written any IF so far, but I have published a bunch of speculative short fiction.

My introduction to IF was the Frotz app, since text adventures were the only games I could play on my smartphone without running out of data immediately. I played games like Slouching Towards Bedlam, Photopia, and Anchorhead (my favorite). Discerning readers might notice that most of these games were released before I was born…

I had played a few Twine games (Birdland!) but had no clue there was still an IF community until I happened across Aaron A. Reed’s “50 Years of Text Games” series. Many of the games listed had been entered in IFComp, so I decided to see when the last one was held, and found out that it was 1. not defunct and 2. currently in the voting stage! After reading the reviews on this forum and lurking for a while, I finally gave in and made an account.

I definitely don’t have the time to be writing any IF but I probably will do it anyway.

I am an “Adventurer on the go” as well. I mostly use Frotz and Fabularium in ipad and smartphone.
The games you have already played are ones from the top.
I have no time or skill to write a game by myself but I have plenty enjoyed a lot since I re-entered the IF world playing, voting, reviewing, betatesting and talking about games here.

So, welcome and enjoy.

Hi! I’m Lionstooth (they/them or she/her). I live in Illinois, USA. I’m a longtime IF player, but I’ve only really gotten around to poking at my own projects in the past couple of years. I’m currently working on two Twine pieces (one of which is for this year’s Spring Thing, because why not). Now that I’m taking some time off school, I’m hoping to be able to finally finish both of them sooner rather than later. Adjusting from writing “conventional” fiction to IF is a big leap, especially for someone with minimal coding experience, but I’m muddling through.

I’m also a poet and songwriter, a (very poor) bass player, and I’m learning to produce music in bits and pieces.

Nice to meet everyone!

Hey all! I’m mostly new here and haven’t introduced myself before. I’m Jess (she/her)!

I’ve enjoyed playing IF for the past couple of years and submitted a game to IF Comp 2021 (Unfortunate). It didn’t rank super high and was pretty buggy  but I received a bunch of really lovely and helpful feedback from people who reviewed the game here in the forums. I’m in the process of working on updates to Unfortunate and doing a re-release and definitely want to work on more IF games in the future.

Outside of IF, I’m a writer and game designer. I write traditional fiction and poetry, and I work on generally small solo game dev projects. Right now, I’m working on a 2D point-and-click adventure made in Unity and a couple of tabletop projects with different groups. I live in Chicago with my best pal and our silly pup. I’m hoping to be somewhat active here in the forums and looking forward to getting to know people! :dizzy:

That is the spirit, keep going. I suppose that all the fiction authors started from below.
Thank you for persevering.

I thought Unfortunate had a lot of promise! A really great set-up. It was pretty buggy, but you’re fixing that. I’d love to play it again when you re-release it.
I love P&C adventure games… other than IF, that’s what I play! I’d love to hear more about your project, and if you’re looking for testers, I’m your girl!

Thanks so much  Definitely will need testers and will make sure to circle back when I am looking for folks to help out with that! I gave myself a pretty unreasonable deadline in completing the first go of Unfortunate since I wanted to submit something to the comp. Taking it a touch slower this time around so it may be a little while yet lol. Really appreciate the words of encouragement!

Yeah, seconding how promising Unfortunate felt even in its rough-draft form – I’m excited that you’re doing some retooling and would also be happy to do some testing if it’s helpful.

(Also, welcome to the forums!)

Yes, of course, as Amanda and Mike said, I also can do some betatest if you need.

I’ve been putting off introducing myself but I guess I should. I’m Gwen, I use no pronouns. I just recently started working on a small game that I’m trying to give myself about a month deadline to complete. I’ve worked on other games in python and inform before but never finished anything playable.

So far I’ve really found the forums helpful as a place for technical advice but I’m not sure there’s much I can talk about with some of the games I’m interested in making (including the one I’m currently working on) from a narrative perspective since I’m mostly focused on Adult/Erotic IF. AIF is also where most if not all of my play time of IF is as well. I do have some ideas for games that would be better suited to share here but at least for now those arent my main focus.

Outside of IF I’m mainly interested in politics and philosophy. I am especially interested in Foucault and I would say all of my art and writing is influenced by him.

Welcome Gwen! I also started out in AIF and I still write adult content in many of my games.

We can certainly help with game mechanics here, just make sure that any requests for testing or links to anything NSFW are tagged appropriately and have a content warning, also use judicious spoiler-blur or Details tags as necessary for any code that is posted publicly.

Extensive detail discussion of erotic “plot” or prose are likely best done in private message threads. I’m also happy to assist if you need to PM me directly @HanonO.

I certainly wouldn’t be offended by this… Erotica is a venerable and important art form. There has been extensive discussion here of sex-heavy games (for instance, Weird Grief from this year’s comp) and there don’t seem to have been any problems with that. I say go ahead and discuss what you want about your narrative, blur it, and let anyone who is uncomfortable with it ignore it.

Mike Arnautov here, de-lurking after many years. I’ve been doodling with IF for decades now, though very far from the IF mainstream. Like many old-timers around here, I got bowled over by the revolutionary original Adventure in early 1980s. Then I discovered expansions of the game: first Luckett’s and Pike’s Adventure II (a.k.a.Adv440), then Platt’s Adventure 3 (a.k.a. Adv550). Having peeped at the source of Platt’s version, I was amazed to discover a language (an actual language!) for writing IF, instead of the rather more impenetrable combination of custom Fortran code plus a database file. That was A-code and I fell in love.

I promptly used A-code to merge Adventure II and Adventure 3 on company’s Prime mini-computers. This was Adventure 4 (later enhanced and released to the world as Adventure4+), while also adding features to Platt’s language. The more I worked with the language, the more intrigued I was by the possibilities of some of its unusual features. So I kept working on exploring their potential and that was one of the motivations for starting in 1998 what turned out to be a five year project of writing the 770 point expansion Adv770.

So it’s fair to say that my interest in IF is largely restricted to A-code. I am no good as a player of IF games – far too interested in looking under the hood and, a contrary soul as I can be, very often finding myself out of sympathy with what I find there. But I am also interested in preserving IF history and did my best in assisting with recovering original implementation code of both Adventure II and Adventure 3. I also assisted with recovery and analysis of Mike Goetz’s Adv580 (having discovered that it was also written in A-code).

So there you are… Mike Arnautov at your service!

Welcome! It sounds like you are part of IF history.

Thank you. The key word is of course “history” as in “alternative history” since A-code never actually took off beyond my humble, obscure efforts.

Hey all,

I’m Alex, I’m new, I’m a programming instructor by day (JavaScript and Python), a heavy sleeper by night because I’m not young anymore, proud dad of a kid that will hopefully turn out smarter than I, and I’ve been playing with Inform7 for a decade or so.

IF-wise, I’ve won an ADRIFT competition… some 13 years ago, and then basically released nothing since then.

Hi

Hi, everyone!

My name’s Sophia, and I was first properly introduced to the wild world of IF through Fallen London and stumbling across Emily Short’s and Sam Ashwell’s blogs, which I promptly devoured. (Come to think of it, I’d played A Small Talk At The Back of Beyond which is a text based game years prior, but never really knew there was a whole community around IF.) I tend to prefer shorter, hyperlink-y experiential games over puzzle-y sorts, and love reading game reviews, especially for games outside of my usual genre tastes.

I’m a biology undergraduate student, and would generally identify myself as a creative- I paint, write poetry, dabble in prose, keep a diary (with pink ink and a pink fountain pen!) run homebrew D&D campaigns, and have been trying my hand at writing IF. I usually play around with the sub-genres of gothic romance and gothic horror. I’m really into audio drama / fictional podcasts too, like Welcome to Nightvale and Wolf 359- and as you might’ve guessed from the icon, I’m a huge fan of Sanrio.

My interests are all over the place, (lately I’ve gotten into thrifting vintage clothing and aiming for a whimsical y2k aesthetic mashed up with some colourful accent pieces from the 70’s-90’s and faux Victoriana- Courtney Love is one of my fashion icons) but I especially like playing horror games, and anything that has to do with the Fae, Austen-esque settings, ghosts and ghouls, focuses on relationships, or weird little critters (be they normal wasps or freaky Eldritch monstrosities.)

Another biologist here! What’s your particular area of interest?

Oh, that’s awesome! Great to meet you!

A lot of the courses that more closely aligned with my interests unfortunately haven’t ran at my university due to the global situation and staffing issues- but I’ve really enjoyed the botany and environmental courses I’ve had the opportunity to take, as well as some dabbling into research animals- where I did quite a lot about lab mice and hemophilia. One of the funner courses focused on bioaccumulation of heavy metals in a marine context! I wish I could’ve taken the mycology course, though, and entomology. Fingers crossed they’re available this upcoming year.

I’m also going for a psychology minor, so I’ve had a number of courses under my belt there- I’ve enjoyed the social and developmental psychology courses the best there.

Hi everyone, my name is Michael and I’m many things: teacher, artist, animator. I also was and still am a huge fan of interactive fiction growing up - particularly graphic and text adventure video games.

I’m also here to promote, if I’m allowed, my latest project Misadventure Adventure (obviously where my username came from). It is a ‘slow paced’ piece of interactive fiction, basically a story with sections that you can vote on the outcome and it will be reflected each fortnight in the next story chapter.

Click Here to See it (completely free)

We also allow comments to become canon - for instance, right now we are taking suggestions for unique creatures and monsters to occupy the world which I’ll be drawing and animating in the story as they appear.

We’re in the setup phase at the moment, so far people have voted on who the protagonist will be, the locations that the story will start in and continue into but next Friday the first chapter will be released in story form with additional illustrations and even some animation.

I know that this particular form of interactive fiction is not the norm here but I don’t really know where else to suggest it and your community feel like they might enjoy signing up - it’s free. There is a paid option but it’s just to donate really, completely unnecessary.

Sorry for the brazen promotion were just really excited about this project and want as many suggestions and votes as we can get!

Thank you!
