Interactive Fiction feature for my newsletter

Greetings and salutations!

It’s me, Merk (Mike Snyder) - author of Tales of the Traveling Swordsman, Distress, and a few others from days gone by. Hopefully this is the right spot for this post. It looks so much different now from when I ran the domain as a PHPBB board.

No, I’m not out of retirement as far as writing IF goes. But I have started a newsletter. While this is going to serve as a plug for that by necessity, the real reason for my visit is to ask for a favor, for anybody willing to participate. As usual for me, this is a bit long-winded, so bear with me. I actually do ask a favor after all this lead-up.

The newsletter is about video games, but the topics vary wildly. I wrote about my game collecting obsession, and about the podcast I did for a few years when my oldest daughter was still a kid. The latest issue is all about music in video games, and next week’s issue is a Summer Game Fest predictions wrap-up and my top picks among the announcements.

The issue after next, or maybe the one after that, will likely be about Interactive Fiction. I’m basically going through all the major topics that shaped me over my life, and this is a big one. I’ll be tackling it from several angles, from a brief history of early text adventures, to a retrospective on some of what I wrote, to maybe a sample transcript and info on how to play classic parser games, to just whatever comes to mind. I might even embed a small CYOA among the pages, somehow. We’ll see.

One part of this, though, and here comes the favor, is that I’d like to feature more than just this. Granted, this may not be worth your time. Right now I have 8 subscribers (two of them are me) and a handful more that check out each issue without actually signing up (which confuses me, because this is just a fun little free thing I’m doing, so why the heck not). Contributing isn’t going to make you famous, unless somehow this becomes more than it currently is eventually and the back issues see a lot of traction. But I digress.

If you’re curious about my tone, topics, and the general vibe, I do a Q&A with myself in the very first issue, and there’s plenty to get a feel for what it’s all about in the four issues (so far) since then. It might give you an idea on whether this is something you’d want to be associated with or not:

I want part of the feature to be about other IF authors, or even just other fans of IF even if you’ve not written anything. Each person who responds (if any) will get a little paragraph with their answers to these questions. I’m looking for short responses if possible. Just a sentence or two for each thing. If it’s a yes/no type or question, feel free to elaborate, but if you’re as long-winded as I am, it might be tough to fit the format I’m going for. If I ask for one example, you can do two or three as long as (again) it’s not overly long. If you don’t want to answer something, or simply can’t, then skip it.

Replying here is OK. I was going to say email me, but that’s asking a lot. So I’ll just get replies from here. Again, it may be the June 21 or June 28 issue where this happens (if not later), but I’ll let you know once I know; if for no other reason than to make sure there’s no confusion about the cut-off or having replies that don’t make it in. If I get too many responses (which I’m not expecting) I might have to pick and choose. I doubt that’ll happen though.

This is basically a mini-biography for each person who responds. Oh, one other thing. The newsletter is generally family-friendly, so please avoid cursing and so forth. Go for it if you like, but I might redact it.

And the questions are:

  1. Your name (or psuedonum; however you’d like to be credited).
  2. Your IF-related website or IFDB page or whatever (if any).
  3. Briefly: What interests you about Interactive Fiction?
  4. Briefly: If you’ve written IF, what game/story are you most proud of?
  5. What’s your preferred tool/platform for writing IF (if you write IF)?
  6. What are your one or two favorites (games/stories not written by you)?
  7. Closing thoughts or additional comments? Briefly, if possible.

And that’s all I’ve got. Thanks in advance.

---- Mike

A weekly newsletter is very ambitious. That would be a full-time job. I’ve downloaded the first 5 issues and will browse through them during lunch over the coming days. I’ll consider subscribing if there’s enough text adventure content. There’s just so much happening in that realm, that it warrants a newsletter of its own.

I’ll send you a personal message.

I’d love to join this! Your newsletter sounds like something I’d like to share with my followers, once the IF piece comes out!

  1. Your name (or psuedonum; however you’d like to be credited): Cy Lawson, AKA Bottlecap Rabbit Games
  2. Your IF-related website or IFDB page or whatever (if any): https://bottlecaprabbitgames.tumblr.com/
  3. Briefly: What interests you about Interactive Fiction: The concept of making a story the reader can actually manipulate or interact with in some way is what originally drew me to IF! I love how it can be made in so many ways, each unique.
  4. Briefly: If you’ve written IF, what game/story are you most proud of: Mind Games: Trepidation. Yes, it is currently in a rewrite, but… that’s my first IF and I love that game to bits.
  5. What’s your preferred tool/platform for writing IF (if you write IF): I’ve recently gotten into Chapbook by Twine! Loving it so far.
  6. What are your one or two favorites (games/stories not written by you): Definitely The Golden Rose and Keeper of the Sun and Moon!
  7. Closing thoughts or additional comments? Briefly, if possible: I hope everything goes well with the newsletter and please link it when posted! I want to share it on my platforms as well!

Thanks! Aside from the feature I’m planning, there’s really no text adventure content at all. A mention or two here or there. So it might not be that interesting for you on a regular basis, but thanks for checking it out!

Perfect! This is just what I’m looking for, in content and size both. Thank you!!!

And the answers are:

  1. Your name (or psuedonum; however you’d like to be credited).
Roberto Ceccarelli aka «The Strawberry Field»
  2. Your IF-related website or IFDB page or whatever (if any).
    https://strawberryfield.altervista.org/adventures-and-interactive-fictions.php?lang=en
  3. Briefly: What interests you about Interactive Fiction?
Creating virtual worlds for the player to explore. It is not the destination that is important, but the journey.
  4. Briefly: If you’ve written IF, what game/story are you most proud of?
I’ve written two stories («Breakfast in the Dolomites» and «Espresso Moka»), and although the first one suffered from a lack of experience, I’m proud of both of them.
  5. What’s your preferred tool/platform for writing IF (if you write IF)?
    Both are written with Inform7
  6. What are your one or two favorites (games/stories not written by you)?
It would be impolite to choose a few stories and ignore many others that are just as good, so I would rather not comment.
  7. Closing thoughts or additional comments? Briefly, if possible.
    Good luck with your newsletter!

Thank you!!!

I have four answers so far. If anybody wants to share the request with friends or others outside the forum who might want to be included, please feel free. Four is enough to make it a feature, but I’ve got room for more.

A minor update on this. It does look like I’ll have my features on interactive fiction done in time for the upcoming June 21st issue #7. More of it has been a retrospective on my own experiences writing IF than I’d originally planned, but I’m working in some more general topics as well. I’ll post a link to the issue here once it’s out (typically Saturday morning). This is a departure from my usual video game topics, but I think it’ll make for a good read even for people unfamiliar with IF. If nothing else, so few subscribers means nobody is likely to complain.

Quick question. I’m linking to the IFDB page for the games that were mentioned in the responses, but I see two different entries for The Golden Rose - one from 1984, and one from Ana Ventura in 2022. An educated guess would say the latter is the correct one?

The one from Anathema/Ana Ventura for sure!

This issue is now out:

Thank you to Robb, Cy, Roberto, and Garry for answering the interview. The first three can be found on page 13, and Garry’s on page 14.

As a primarily video game focused newsletter, this was a little different than usual. I think it turned out well, though, and makes for a good one-off issue. A lot of it is about my own games and experiences, but I tried to promote the larger community as well.

Readership is still nearly non-existent, with 13 subscribers (still 2 of them being me), but maybe it’ll get popular one day and people will dip back into older issues. I’m also brainstorming better ways to promote it, so we’ll see.

This is really cool! Thank you so much for inviting us to participate with you <3 I promo’d this issue and the newsletter itself to my followers, and I hope that earns you a few more subs as well :3 If you ever decide to do another IF newsletter, I’d love to be part of it again!

Well, that was a fun read. I think you did well to make it sound interesting for a general video gaming audience. I particularly enjoyed reading your reminiscences of your own background in text adventures. Good job.

EDIT: I’ve given you a plug on a few IF-related Facebook groups and a couple of Discord servers.

The issue is very interesting!
Thank you for including me alongside such famous personalities.

I have added a backlink to your newsletter on my website: the site is not very popular, but I still think it can contribute to your visibility.

Thanks again for taking part! If I do an IF part-2 issue at some point, I’ll let you know. I covered most of what I wanted to in this issue (the biggest issue I’ve done yet), but there are endless topics when it comes to IF.

Thank you! For the kind words, the plugs, and again for taking part. I appreciate it.

Thank you - for the backlink and for taking part! Every little bit helps, especially when the newsletter itself isn’t very popular yet either.
