I have removed this post based on feedback. I was originally asked to make a post guiding new users how to gain trust, but four months later everyone is confused, so it’s gone.
If anyone has better suggestions downthread, please share.
We’ve got hundreds of users who haven’t had trouble gaining requisite trust to become forum members with access to all features, so the best thing is just participate. Read the forum. Reply to existing threads. Visit more than once.

I’m sorry to revive this, but I’m a new user here and there is no option to send private messages.
I’m not sure if it’s something that unlocks over time, but brand new users can’t message the bot for the tutorial.
Edit: It took two posts for messaging to unlock. I was very confused about not having the option as it was suggested to gain trust. It might be a good thing to mention that it doesn’t unlock immediately.

That doesn’t seem terribly helpful, when the original post is like “Your access to the forum is initially restricted due to lack of Trust. You can gain Trust by talking to @discobot” and, from what @OkamiLuna is saying, it turns out that one of the things you can’t do initially is talk to @discobot.

I believe new users are limited in that they can’t initially create PMs until they move from level 0 to 1 which usually is a time thing, and a “read enough posts” thing.
Discobot usually will automatically PM new users offering the tutorial, and new users are not restricted from responding to that, or they can actually activate the Discobot by replying in this message, which gives them a reply credit toward Trust.
Thousands of users have taken the tutorial and gained Trust automatically on the forum, so I’ll accept your criticism that my description might not “seem terribly helpful” but the process seems to be working.
I know I’m still new but I agree with @JTN. The post seems more like you’re saying to message discobot to get trust to unlock more features. I’m really sorry but it’s not terribly clear or intuitive in that way.
For me it took nearly half an hour of looking around the forum and attempting to message discobot. To the point that I ended up having to google if I could message features or if it was a post that was older and something changed.
And discobot only PMs users after they’ve unlocked it.
Yeah, that definitely sounds like a bug! Discobot is supposed to message you and guide you through the tutorial without you needing any trust at all.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s one we can fix on our end—that’s something that needs to be fixed in Discourse itself.

This is what I was wondering and why I pointed it out. Since Discobot never PM’d me until after I gained enough trust to actually use the PMs.
I don’t think the post needed to be removed, just the wording changed slightly. It was a good post and directed me to the tutorial, it’s just that like I said, the bot doesn’t PM you immediately and waits until you gain trust enough to unlock PMs.
