How can I host Twine games now that Philome.la has shut down?

How can i host my game ? https://philome.la/ , is down and i don´t know how to make a webpage , can someone send me an easy hosting website please ?

Try https://itch.io/ or http://textadventures.co.uk/ - I think in both cases you can just upload a zip file that contains an index.html file? Oh, looks like on Itch you can just upload the HTML file that you get from Twine.

Correct. If you upload an index.html to itch, or a zip with index.html in the top layer, you can select to have it playable in the browser on the page. Itch also allows “draft mode” which means the page and game are private so you can experiment with the site and invite testers using a secret URL.

You can search for Twine on itch, there’s a lot of it:

Here’s a copy of my post on this topic from the r/twinegames subreddit when someone asked a question about what had happened to Philome.la and what alternatives there are:

See the “Philome.la is shutting down at the end of the month.” announcement posted here a little under a month ago.

Chapel has a list of some other online Twine publishing resources here.

Personally, I use a combination of Google Drive, to store all of the files, DriveToWeb, to make the Google Drive content accessible like a webpage (you’ll need to mark the content as “shared” in Google Drive), and Bitly, to provide a shorter URL. For example, that’s how I provide access to my Twine/SugarCube sample code collection.

That said, I will note that Reddit and some other sites block Bitly links by default, since it could be used to link to anything . This means that I have to approve my own Reddit posts when I use a Bitly link like that last one, otherwise the post sits hidden in moderation until another mod approves it. :stuck_out_tongue:

The upside is, if I ever move my files somewhere else, I can just modify that Bitly link to point to the new location, and everyone’s Bitly bookmarks to my stuff will still work. Easy-peasy.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the tips … I have used OD and DrivetoWeb to host twine game for beta testing … the loading of audio and video files are slow. I think I will move it to Itch eventually.

There’s also the successor to Philome.la, which serves IF in general: https://borogove.io/.

Itch is actually what I would recommend. I really appreciate how you can set up the entire game page and website but put it in “Draft” mode which prevents it from being casually viewed or recommended on the site. That’s how I do it for beta testing.

When the page/game is in Draft mode, at the top as you’re viewing it you can click the “Secret URL” button which will produce a unique non-searchable and unguessable constant URL in the address bar that you can copy and provide to testers to link directly to the beta version of the page and everything on it without having to mess with a password. Then when you release the game, the secret URL will naturally redirect to the public version of the page.

If you want to follow HanonO’s suggestion, check out Itch.io's “Uploading HTML5 games” page for instructions on how to upload stuff there.

Thank for the detailed instructions.

Thank you for the link … I will check it out.

Thanks to the advice from the wonderful people here, I have finally posted my interactive fiction created with Twine on itch.io.

Please feel free to take a look and let me know what you think. THANKS.
