Hello! I’ve progressed a little bit in this game, and have reached a point where I can choose between three things. I chose the eurythmics record, and now I’m a bit stuck.
I’ve seen the fresco and embroidery and the stairs, so I figure I need to encode the first letter of each line into a step.
The problem is that there are three ambiguous cases D, E, and F and the other issue that I don’t know if the steps are in ascending or descending order. That leaves at least 32 possibilities. I’ve tried 11642368, 11642361, 88642361 and 81642361. I figure it’s probably also related to the song on the disc but listening to it I couldn’t tell what the main theme was supposed to be.
I assumed that the dash at the start of the second line signified that it was the E from the second octave (8) and the lack of dashes on any other line signified that they were from the first octave (1-7). I don’t know for certain that that’s the intended interpretation, but it got me the correct sequence on the first try, so it seems reasonably likely.
(I don’t know how common this notation is, but I recognise it from Loom, where of the eight notes on your distaff, the top note is written C’ to distinguish it from the bottom one, which is written C.)
It may be useful to players to know that once you have chosen an object from the table you can drop it to leave the area you are visiting. The three central areas are interchangeable and solvable in any sequence. They are also “autonomous” in the sense that no objects from other areas are needed to solve them (although the fact that similar objects exist and can perform multiple functions has been taken into account). When you take one of the objects from the table for the second time, you go back from the exact room you previously left.
(I’ve removed the ‘solved’ option from this thread as it gives an annoying popup each time I write).
I return for some more general guidance.
I am in the area obtained by choosing the watch.
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
-Tricked the guard into falling into the hole
-Tried putting different figurines in different recesses (like the basilisk and the black eagle based on the mural, since that one had two figurines)
-Setting the altar to a time (I think I tried 19:33 and 12:00)
-Removed the poster to see the timetable
-Found the machine with two slots
Here’s my assumption:
The two slots are filled with objects received from two puzzles. I assume the timetable, church altar, and upstairs room are all part of one puzzle. Perhaps if we set the time right the metal object will fall.
I see the book has October 43 and October 57 listed. The times 10:43 and 10:57 also appear in the time table. Setting the altar to those times does not release the object.
With the figurines, I think only 1 or 2 of the scenes has two figurines in it. Putting in the corresponding figurines for those scenes gives me a clock time, but I’m not sure what to do with it. I assume winning this puzzle will give me an object to put into a slot.
So, I have concepts of a plan, but no real plan. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
Edit: Okay, I figured it out. The dates in the library books correspond to Bern and Zurich on the timetable, and Bern and Zurich are in the last scene. I looked up what Bern’s symbol was and put the bear and black eagle into the recesses. I then realized that I had been setting the big clock wrong using colons, I had to use no colons. I set it to 2010 and got the star.
To all, once the competition finishes up I’ll probably be putting together an Invisiclues file for this one, so I welcome any suggestions for questions.
I did notice one oddity with the hub room, although it doesn’t seem possible to cause any progression issues with it. If the punch card is placed on the table, taking it again gives the message from when it’s stuck in the machine, and requires taking the record again to go weigh down the button.
It’s a bug, unfortunately. Given the case, I wouldn’t fight the idea of receiving transcripts (type SCRIPT at the beginning) or suggestions for review once the comp is over. Or in the meantime: it’s not like I’m working on anything else at the moment
Okay, another question. I’m near the end of the third area I’ve chosen (the trinity one. I’ve passed through the area and have reached the computer. But I can’t figure out what to do now. I have the binder and the rubber suit with a hole, read the locker engravings (I see now where the locker-room humor was going to be but I like this solution better), and I found the computer. I don’t know what to type. I’ve tried PASSWORD, TRINITY, RUN, CD, and a few others.
I’m in the control tower. I have the logbook and the radio. I can’t go to the airplane because it takes off without me. The lamp is green. I can send commands through morse code by typing. Right now the logbook suggests ‘oranges’ and ‘pip’ which are both part of the alphabet. I’ve tried ‘type pip’, ‘type p’, ‘type o’, ‘type oranges’, as well as spelling out the word ‘oranges’ using the alphabet.
Thanks, I looked where you said, and I found the following:
a woman playing a lyre and the words ‘Fell a soldier’s heart’ (which spells ‘FASH’).
I tried TYPE LYRE, TYPE LONDON, TYPE FASH, but none of those worked.3. 4. 5. 6.
Part of the issue holding me back is that it’s not clear how the device operates to me. I can imagine six scenarios on how it works (in general, not for this specific puzzle):
I’m supposed to type a word, like TYPE LYRE.
I’m supposed to type a single letter, like TYPE P (to represent pip)
I’m supposed to type the code, like TYPE PIP or TYPE LONDON
I’m supposed to spell the code out, like TYPE LONDON YELLOW ROBERT EDDY
I’m supposed to type out like above but each one individually. Like TYPE LONDON. TYPE YELLOW. TYPE ROBERT. TYPE EDDY.
I’m supposed to type the word in quotations, like TYPE “LYRE”.
Because I’m not sure which method to try, and there’s no feedback indicating anything one way or another, I’m kind of at a loss. I’m glad there are smarter people who have completed the game, though!
Yeah, this is a puzzle where one bit of outside knowledge is maybe not necessary but at least overwhelmingly helpful. I don’t know if the usual hint structure makes much sense in that context, but I’ll try.
Without that outside knowledge, your summary of the ambiguity is completely correct.
In the logbook’s list of codes, we see ‘oranges’ and ‘pip’. These are from the RAF radiotelephony alphabet; not a code to hide information but one to make communication over a tenuous radio connection easier.
Each of those words, and the 5-6 words mentioned later in the logbook, stands for one letter and only means that letter.
What was the symbolic meaning of that line earlier in the game?
TYPE FREDDY
And yes, it’s not sensible to use this alphabet for radiotelegraphy, and the hint is oblique.
Thank you, this was helpful. It seems that I must have missed something else important.
TYPE FREDDY gives me the standard response, and looking in the binoculars shows no change (i.e. the lamp is still green). I tried combining things like TYPE ORANGE. TYPE PIP. TYPE FREDDY. But that didn’t worok either.
Is there some other condition needed that I’m missing? It may be something that’s obvious to you but not to me. Maybe like plugging in the radio to something or type ROGER or something at the end?
I often resolve these kinds of questions by reading hints or walkthroughs or decompiling the game, but this game doesn’t have hints or a walkthrough and uses a lot of passwords and delayed messages and so I’m unable to do that now. So I am usually this inept at parser games, I usually just hide it.
I think I’m stuck in the Trinity area with (I’m guessing) getting the panel/card from the southwest tank. I think the only object I have from here is a mangy broom which “doesn’t have a hook” and this setting feels bare enough that I’m not sure where another object would be able to hide. So I have no idea if I’m supposed to be:
bending the broom into a hook?
finding/attaching something else to the broom to make a hook?
magnetizing the metal broom pole with the electricity somehow?
finding a logical loophole to both drain the water and get to the southwest tank?
manipulating the water/electricity to somehow float the panel closer?
No idea
Edit: Oh, wait, I didn’t try pushing the panel instead of pulling it? Hrm. But then it sinks. Maybe that’s progress though
