Gen AI disclosure on itch.io

As of yesterday, itch.io has deployed a new disclosure setting regarding the use of Gen AI in projects published on the website. Projects then automatically get the AI Generated or No AI tag (for filtering when browsing).

Note: this is an optional disclosure for games, but mandatory for assets.

I was pleased with this in general, but also very relieved that they set up batch tagging for assets. Otherwise I’d still be over there tagging my projects :joy:

Wish they’d set up batch tagging for games as well. I was lazy and only tagged the ones that still get a nonzero amount of traffic (all No AI, of course).

It would be nice if they had a tag for the cover photo separately. I have one game with a manipulated AI image as a cover photo, even though there is no AI content in the game.

I agree. I experimented with an AI cover image for a long term game I have in development. It actually turned out pretty nice, much more complicated that I could have ever drawn.

I am still conflicted for using AI even for that purpose.

I’ve found this tag a relief. There were so many AI generated asset packs… Now, when I searched for no-AI in the tags, hardly any background art packs came up at all.

In general I’ve drawn my own covers, but I agree, not sure I could have pulled off this particular one in the time frame I needed it.
