Just piggybacking on this thread to say that I’ve been working on getting every IFComp game ever reviewed, and only five games are left.
One of them is this one:
Despite numerous ratings over the last two decades, no one has had the courage to publish an IFDB review. Would anyone who is not uncomfortable with the subject matter be willing to post a review?
I might try to get to that, though might not be for a bit… what are the other Comp games without reviews? Wondering whether I already looked at them back in the day…
Oh wait, saw the search in the other thread. I did review Sun and Moon, I’m pretty sure, so
I can post that one later today!
Edit: put it up! A little sad it’s lost and gone forever; it wasn’t an amazing game but it was memorable and tried some new stuff.
Ah, that would be great; that’s the unrecoverable one!
I saw your review! Thanks so much!
I know you saw the search, but here’s a link in case anyone else wants to see:
Stick it to the Man is the only other game that is easy to play that I skipped for content’s sake, if someone wants to try it. Just profanity and sexual references.
Ask, and it shall be given you. I’ve made it so. It was both funnier and more educational than the earlier MST3K Stiffy Makane game. It was definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, 100% NSFMathbrush.
Huh, maybe it’s because glulxe(the interpreter I’m using in the Linux console, not the format it plays) doesn’t support sound out of the box and I can’t even tell if it supports images due to lacking a working eye and having no monitor, or maybe I’m missing something in the game world, but the Undiscovered Country, or at least what I’ve played so far, is much tamer than I was expecting from that over the top disclaimer and comments about Stiffy’s character in this thread. Granted, I did decide to ignore the recommendation to play the previous games since there’s no convenient means of following urls presented in a console parser I’m aware of.
The first half of the The Undiscovered Country is comparatively mild. By the time you get to the Klingon section, it leans into the grotesque a lot more. The images in the very final section are more graphic as well.
The thing about Stiffy Makane is that almost all the games were written by different authors, and after the first one - which is a gross one-note sex-and-violence game that’s notable for having a funny bug (detachable genitalia) and the MST3K version making fun of it - the character’s largely been a way of engaging with the idea of sex in IF; understandably they wind up going in a lot of different directions and are interested in more than just sheer prurience (or so I understand, I’ve only played the more recent ones).
