I have some work still to do, but I want to try to finish something for this event; thanks for the reminder!

As Iā€™m a stickler for accuracy, should ā€˜ECTOCOMPā€™ always be written in upper case?

Very nice presentation on the itchio page. I may try to put something simple together. Most everyone enjoys the Hallows Eve season.

As per tradition, I would say yes. But al you can write it as you please!

This is already a fun comp. I have started an I7 game. Developing the game with I7 is helping me finally learn how to actually write a full game. With I7 to boot! It will take longer to write the game than four hours since I spend so much time researching the I7 syntax. I love the fall season!

Iā€™m hyped for ECTOCOMP this year! Fascinating to see how far itā€™s come. I havenā€™t entered one in (checks watch) a while, but maybe Iā€™ll manage to come up with something this year.

Regarding the spelling, ECTOCOMP has been spelled any number of ways. I spelled it entirely inconsistently when I was uploading stuff to IFDB (either Ectocomp or EctoComp) and even all lowercase in the banner for 2014 (#8). However although there is no regulated, official spelling all caps is the preferred, spookiest way (see the original ECTOCOMP announcement thread). @J_J_Guest will back me on this, I think/hope.

Would SpongeBob case (EcToCoMp) be spooky enough? Or does that just fall in ā€œobnoxiousā€ territory?

The code I wrote for my IFComp game should be reusable for a Petite Mort game. Itā€™d be a matter of plugging values into a table, if all goes well.

Oh, and folks, remember, get things in on the 30th, not the 31st!

Iā€™m pretty sure Iā€™ve spelled it that way at least once, but I canā€™t say Iā€™m not obnoxious sometimes soā€¦

@Ruber_Eaglenest has final say on it of course as the current organizer, but ECTOCOMP has historically been pretty lax and forgiving about drawing hard lines around any rules or anything so I imagine itā€™s all good as long as you donā€™t accidentally spell the name of a different comp.

COMETCop is my favorite comp. In fact my very first IF game was made for the 2019 edition of CocoTemp.
Iā€™ll definitely enter a game in this yearā€™s EcoCompt.

Where does the name ā€˜ECTOCOMPā€™ come from anyway? I imagine it to be a combination of Ectoplasm (from Ghost Busters) and Competition. Does that sound right?

You are right.

I had to ask exactly the same some years ago

Yes, the name came from ectoplasm and from the Ghostbustersā€™ car license plate number ECTO 1. It has nothing much to do with the Greek prefix meaning outside. The case has varied as Duncan said, but my preference was for ALL CAPS. ECTOCOMP has run every year without a break since 2007 and Iā€™m really pleased that Ruber is running it again this year!

I wonā€™t be ready for IFComp, but Iā€™m shooting for entering my game into the Grand Guignol. It may be tight, though. Fingers crossed!

Woot! Looking forward to playing it.

If you add page on IFWiki (using this form) itā€™ll automatically appear on the Main Page there. Incidentally, IFWiki has been writing it as ā€œEctocompā€ since 2007

By the way, I hear itā€™s going to be sponsored by Petco.com.

Right now I have zero further time to do that. If someone could do that for me I would be grateful. Itā€™s impossible for me right now.

Thatā€™s awesome!

I think we have a topic for the next year! ECTOCOMP tribute to Ghostbusters!!!
