Is the community version suitable for writing a game?
If so, should you download the current code or the earlier release?

Absolutely. There’s just about to be a new release, but 1a/01 is a big improvement over 0m/03.

I don’t know of any reason not to use the community version, and it fixes at least a couple of bugs (including an important one where using certain vocabulary words crashes the Z-machine once your game exceeds a certain size). As for which version you should get, I’m not sure it matters, but I think there’s a release coming soon in any case?

Yep! 1a/01 has been around for a good while now, and 1b/01 is about to release (hopefully this week). You might want to stick with 1a/01 for the first couple weeks in case someone finds a bug in 1b/01, but 1b/01 only added capabilities (didn’t remove any of them), so it shouldn’t be hard to upgrade when you need those capabilities or when 1b/01 has been sufficiently battle-tested.
