Dark theme is no longer dark

As of a couple of days ago, the “Dark” theme now appears to be a light theme.
Does anyone else see the same issue?

I encountered this too, and was able to fix it by changing the “Color Palette”.

Thanks. I did find the palette was set to “horizon”, although I don’t fully understand the relationship between the theme and the palette.

The theme changes the design of the site, and the color palette changes the color scheme. Each theme has a corresponding color palette (or multiple, for light/dark mode and more) but you can mix and match as you please.

I’ve never set the palette before and (presumably) it was automatically following the theme. Did the “horizon” palette get forcibly set for everyone?

The mods switched Horizon to be the default setting. The previous default was IntFiction, so you can switch to that if you want (and that’s what I’m using).

Just to add another data point for the mods, neither my theme nor my color palette were changed in the update. They are both still the old default, “IntFiction,” which is what I like.

The Horizon theme is really nice so we’re trying it as the default forum theme. It should only affect new accounts.

As always you can change this. Click the hamburger menu on the upper left if you don’t see the sidebar. Under “Your Preferences” click “Theme/Color/Text Size” and the top two options are Theme and Color Palette. Don’t forget to click “Save” at the bottom after making changes.

The color palette names are a bit confusing. Some themes will have a named palette that works best with the theme. For IntFiction you normally will choose Light or Dark; there are also IntFiction Grey and IntFiction Parchment schemes which is the normal light color scheme but with the background dialed down a bit from pure white.

Horizon has it’s own “Horizon” and “Horizon Dark” palettes, but as stated you can mix and match at your preference.

My favorite dark-but-not-black theme SoBlue looks best with the “SoBlue” scheme. (I just renamed it - I had it as “Copy of Blue,” dont’ know what I was thinking!)

Isn’t it a problem that the immediate way to choose a theme is just setting the theme and not modifying the palette? The theme selector on the sidebar makes no mention of a palette and doesn’t adjust the palette to match the theme.

If a brand new account logs in and choose “Dark” from the theme selector in the sidebar, does the theme look correct? If not that seems a broken experience.

I can see how that would be a problem. I’ve disabled this theme component.

As an aside, that’s a brilliant way to put it, “broken experience." I will definitely be using that myself in the future.
