Jonathan, personally I recommend adding anticommunism to the list of adult-offending political nonsense.
(yes, I’m aware (being Italian…) that fascism itself is a form of anticommunism, but if we want to kept out the current political poisoning from the shores of IF, we should build a solid bulwark…)
I would not add anticommunism to any sort of adult-offending list. I base this on communism and its ideals being the motivation for most of the bloodshed and misery of the 20th century apart from the two World Wars.
The enemy of your enemy is often just another enemy.
info for you: the rest of the world don’t follow US thinking on political science.
OTOH, in my country, the Italian Communist Party was, and is still remembered as a great Party, loyal first and foremost to the Country (that is, Italy), so I disagree not for politics, but for Patriotism.
I am a proud socialist and disagree that Communism is the motivation for most of the non-Nazi bloodshed and misery of the 20th century. I believe that seriously overlooks the crimes of capitalism, religious fundamentalism and their ideological allies.
I also don’t think anticommunism should be a sensitive content tag. I disagree virulently with anticommunism, but this discussion is more concerned with content that can trigger PTSD reactions and/or expose children to things that can disturb their development.
I am also struggling to think of any explicitly anticommunist IF game I’ve encountered.
I seem to remember reading something not too long ago about a subversive political text adventure distributed clandestinely in Soviet Russia, presumably in the 80s. Does someone know what I’m talking about? Or was it just a dream? (The latter is honestly possible.)
Thinking about it, while I’ve never gotten far into it, I assume Border Zone is anti-Soviet in perspective (though it was made during glasnost, so maybe not?).
I ruled out both world wars because the first was caused by major powers being to proud to back down and unite to chase down terrorists. The second, of course, caused by hard feelings over the end of WW1 and a madman able to leverage those hard feelings into genocide and war. I forgot the Armenian Genocide, which was motivated by religious and ethnic bigotry. Same goes for Bosnia and Rwanda. The remaining great genocides, particularly the Holodomor, Killing Fields, Great Leap Forward, and so on killed far more and were motivated primarily by pursuit of communism with religious and ethic hatred being used to further communism. I’ve studied this topic for a long time.
Here’s an interesting infographic: 20th Century Death — Information is Beautiful I only found it 10 minutes ago so can’t say much interesting about it! But communism does get a mention.
I’m a madman. He was an asshole. Please don’t push people coping with mental illness under the bus. I wouldn’t make a very good head of government but I don’t think I’d kill 50 million people.
I actually found The People’s Glorious Revolutionary Text Adventure Game communist-friendly. It’s making fun of small revolutionary groups, but it’s good hearted fun. I would happily recommend it to my communist friends (if they were at all interested in IF).
Almost all of Bruno Dias’s works are criticisms of capitalism or proponents of communism, with varying amounts of subtlety. He’s also a great writer/designer.
I think there is an important point which has not yet been mentioned. Namely, if one wishes sincerely to create a comprehensive list of adult-offending political nonsense, every political ideology will have to be on it.
Or, if one only wishes to include ideologies which have been associated with horrific acts of political violence - that still includes all of them.
Perhaps it would be better to simply include a catch-all “political content” label and leave it at that. This would also wisely sidestep the need to assign a specific ideological label to political works which may be ambiguous or open to different interpretations.
