Beta testers wanted: The Etruscan — historical IF set in 5th-century BCE Mediterranean

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for beta testers for The Etruscan, a browser-based interactive fiction game set in the ancient Mediterranean.

Play here: https://theetruscanif.vercel.app — no download, no install, runs in any browser. ~30-45 min for Act I.

WHAT IT IS

A text adventure inspired by Mika Waltari’s historical novel, set in 5th-century BCE Mediterranean. You play a traveler carrying the guilt of a burned temple, seeking answers at the Oracle of Delphi. The game features:

  • 4 character classes (Storm-Born, Warrior, Seer, Seafarer) — each with unique text variations, abilities, and weaknesses
  • 111 scenes in Act I, including 40 optional side quests
  • Omen/Defy system — follow the gods’ signs or reject them. Neither is “correct,” but the balance shapes your story
  • Dice-based skill checks (2d6 vs. Spirit/Body/Fate)
  • Pebble collection — inscribed stones that record your turning points
  • Illustrated scenes (AI-generated, Mediterranean oil painting style)
  • Background music and sound effects
  • Encyclopedia with unlockable lore entries

Zero dependencies, works in any modern browser. A single-file offline version is also available.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

Honest feedback on anything, but especially:

  • Flow & pacing — are there scenes that drag or feel rushed?
  • Clarity — is it ever unclear what your choices mean or what happened?
  • Dead ends / bugs — did you get stuck, hit a broken path, or encounter something unexpected?
  • Character classes — did your class feel meaningfully different?
  • Omen/Defy — did the system feel meaningful, or just decorative?
  • The ending — Act I ends at a natural story break. Does it leave you wanting more, or frustrated?

Any amount of testing is useful — even 10 minutes of first impressions helps.

TECH DETAILS

Thanks for your time. Happy to answer questions about the design, the source material, or the tech.

I read The Egyptian by Mika Waltari (twice!) and I loved it. I haven’t found The Etruscan yet, but I’ll get a sideways acquaintance of it through your game. I’ll start playing tomorrow.

This looks really nicely presented. A small problem is that I’m finding the text on windows desktop a little too small. It wouldn’t need much, perhaps just a small/medium/large option.

Will play more details.

Edit:

Further on text size and layout;

If i try increasing the browser zoom, it works for the text, but then i am usually having to scroll to see the choices. This is not so nice.

At normal size:

I notice there’s a lot of wasted virtual space. The line height has been increased over its font metric and paragraphs are short leading to additional space lost. For example, “The Valley Of Delphi” I count only 9 lines filling the page with two choices.

Now the layout spacing is obviously to look nice, and it does. But perhaps if a larger font is requested, it should also compress the space slightly as well.

I’ve been aiming for 13 lines on a page, but i admit my text spacing is quite cramped.

Hi, thanks for the feedback! I have added a change font-size button to the top. especially prominent, when entering the game through the title screen.

Thanks so much  BTW: the pebbles are playing a key role in the book

ok, so i played the game a couple of times.

Overall, i thought the choices weren’t making a sufficient difference. For example, i could opt for mediation, and yet i was still in a race and throwing the javelin. It seemed to me the story was fixed, but all i could do is omit optional scenes.

i have some comments about the artwork.

Honestly, you need to fix some of the embarrassing AI mistakes. The woman with three hands is the worst. please fix this.

Also massively, the consistency! I mean, i met the priests, except each time, they are different priests with different beards and outfits.

Even worse, I’m sat after a race with a friend (which i didn’t opt for), and next shot we’re in a river and both characters are totally different people!! And later, they are different again.

Really helpful … thanks a lot !!! … I have to admit … I have not thought about character consistency at all.

Just added an auto-save function. Thanks for pointing that one out.
So as far as I can see the biggest issues now are:

  • artwork (AI bugs)
  • character consistency in the artwork
  • check the logic of events sequences and the wording of the events
  • have more meaningful choices and effects
