Beta testers wanted for “Where is Mr. Beaver?”

I am currently looking for beta testers for my IFComp entry “Where is Mr. Beaver?”.

It is a relatively short IF game played by text parser, multiple choice, or voice input.

“Where is Mr. Beaver?” is browser-based and should run on all current browser systems.

The game can be played in English and German. I am not a native English speaker, so I would be particularly grateful for language feedback from native speakers. I have some linguistic gaps, especially when it comes to common synonyms.

If you’d like to test it, please send me a private message. The link to the game is public, but an almost insurmountable combination lock blocks the way into the game.

Technical notes:

The game requires access to the browser’s storage capabilities (writing data to an indexeddb should be allowed, which is the case per default). A transcript is automatically generated. It can be viewed under “Log.”

Advanced options appear when you activate “Debug mode” in the options. Then, under “Info,” you can download all persistent data (game scores, log files, transcripts) as a ZIP file.

Mr. Beaver in hard facts

  • Interactive fiction playable in English and German
  • Fully controllable with text parser (ideal for notebooks), multiple choice (ideal for tablets), or voice input (ideal for smartphones)
  • Approx. 1-2 hours of playtime
  • Context-sensitive help
  • Runs on all current browsers, highly configurable interface

If you’re interested to have a look, I’ll send you the link to the game and the secret code for entry.

Two testers are already working intensively on the question of where Mr. Beaver is (and whether he might be in grave danger). I would grant access to one more concerned person in the hope that Mr. Beaver can be saved from a terrible fate.

Thanks to the feedback from the testers so far, I have been able to improve the version in many, many areas, especially the language, puzzle plausibility, and comfort.

(Andrew, I even included your magical wastebasket where you can dispose of all items that are no longer needed).

A new version is expected to be available tomorrow. Everyone who has already registered will receive more detailed information via private message. I would like to take on one more tester, then I will probably be at the limit of what I can handle.

A new version of “Where is Mr. Beaver?” is now available!

Mr. Beaver is still missing, and the worst is to be expected.

What might make things a little more bearable: several hundred corrections and revisions. Better texts (especially in English), improved player guidance, countless bugs removed, great new fonts. Never before has Mr. Beaver’s gruesome fate been so entertaining!
