Ataraxia - now fully soundtracked!

For my IFcomp 2024 prize I was delighted to be able to choose to have the wonderful @FLACRabbit create an original soundtrack for one of my games. I asked for a soundtrack to my first game, Ataraxia, and I’ve finally integrated the audio into the game itself. You can play or download it here!

The soundtrack is everything I could have hoped for and more - it adds so much depth and atmosphere to the game. Huge thanks again to @FLACRabbit for all the care and effort they put into these compositions.

Lauren O’Donoghue has been an ideal client - quick to respond, willing to consider multiple options, and specific about requests and feedback. When I asked her for some musical inspirations for each area, she sent me a long message with descriptive adjectives and links to YouTube videos with particular tracks from other media, far beyond what I was expecting. I was prepared to iterate and revise until the music matched the hypothetical prize-winner’s vaguely expressed but very specific vision, but instead I was essentially given free reign to come up with the core ideas. All in all, she made it such a painless process on my end that I’m considering doing this again for a future IFComp. Thank you.

To players in general: I’d really recommend replaying the game, even if you tried it before. Don’t hesitate to PM me and tell me what you think of the soundtrack; I know that there are several other musicians on the forum, and I’m curious to hear your opinion.

This is so kind of to you to say - you really did make the process so exciting and easy for me, though. Of all the games I’ve made Ataraxia is by far the one that means the most to me, and so it was quite nerve wracking to trust someone with soundtracking it, but you understood the vision I had for it so clearly and I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. It’s been nearly three years since the first release of the game and it’s so thrilling to me that it’s still having new life breathed into it this far down the line. Thank you so much for all your effort @FLACRabbit - I hope we have an opportunity to collaborate again in future!

I replayed this earlier and the music captures the mood of the game so perfectly I can’t imagine going back and playing it without it now. I think Jonah’s theme might be my favorite, but they’re all so good.
