a rare thing: a little appreciation of I10

Fooling around with I10, I make a minor mistake getting this rather helpful error message:

Problem. You wrote 'Check pushing out' , which seems to introduce a rule taking effect only if the action is 'pushing out'. But that did not make sense as a description of an action. I notice that there's an action called 'Pushing out to', though: perhaps this is what you meant? I am unable to place this rule into any rulebook.
 See the manual: 7.1 > 7.1. Actions

the noticing of the mispelled action was the correct nudging, and compiles (of course, there are various issues caused by rust; but this is good, proves the maturity of inform 10, which compiles something not compiled since a pair or so of years…)

That is a good error message! I didn’t realize we had access to Inform 10?

Inform 10 is the latest version of Inform 7, which is not confusing at all.

It would be better if Inform6 had another name so that Inform could freely set its version. Probably to late for that, though…

Inform 6 had the name first; Inform 7 is the one that should have taken a new name when it was reinvented!

If only he’d called it Inform 2!

It was briefly “Natural Inform”. (The compiler binary is still called ni.) However, Graham decided early on to call it just “Inform”, as distinct from “Inform 6”.

This is simple and has resolved all confusion. :)

Is there an update or a new IDE I need to download? I probably need to start hanging around somewhere where these things get discussed! :face_with_tongue:

I knew it was called i10, I just didn’t realize it was available. I was hoping to read documentation of updates.

If you compile a game in the version you have, it says

Release 1 / Serial number 260226 / Inform 7 v10.1.2 / D

1.82 is the IDE version, not the language version.

(The “7” is arguably a mistake, given everything we’ve just said.)
