It’s a bit late (life!) and I’ve not really sure what to write because I’ve not done one of these before.
Thank you to those who organised the contest, provided rewards, helped me playtest and edit!
I’m the author of https://mossandquillstudios.itch.io/a-quiet-scurry-final which is about a small harvest mouse.
What did I want to do? Make a cute little story about the realities of being itty bitty and vulnerable.
Did I do that? I think so? I could have spent a bit more time polishing to narration, but by the time I submitted it I was struggling to think of ways to describe something tiny.
Why did I do it? I’m an animal but, I have many classic and exotic animals and although I’ve never had a harvest mouse I have had a variety of rodents and I love them! They’re forgotten I think, unless it’s a hamster or a rabbit or a rat. I nearly went with a shrew instead because those little noses are so dang adorable but the setting of a wheat field I think was more atmospheric. I thought about adding another branch that had a farmer with a tractor and harvester but it didn’t make sense with the timeline.
For most choices there was a definite death, a definite survival and one which was 50/50 because that felt more real. Sometimes things kill an animal that small and sometimes they’re lucky. I know some people weren’t has happy about there being an option that was instant death but, to me, that’s the reality.
I enjoyed writing it, seeing positive opinions of it really boosted my confidence about writing.
