Start of a transcript of Dr Ego and the egg of Man-Toomba An Interactive Fiction Story by Special Agent. Release 3 / Serial number 400410 / Inform v6.33 Library v6.12.3pre Standard interpreter 1.2 (0) / Library serial number 190320 >about ABOUT I began writing this story in April 2020. I was watching the Indiana Jones films at the time, and drew inspiration from the plucky protagonist. This was also a time of adventure and upheaval for me. I moved to another country earlier in the year, and just like this story, I faced challenges I had to solve and overcome. I also wanted to learn a new interactive fiction authoring system. Having written stories in Inform 7 and Quest, I wanted to try a system that uses more traditional programming paradigms. In the end I chose to write this story in Inform 6. see CREDITS. >credits CREDITS My thanks to Andrew Schultz, Durafen and Jason Lautzenheiser for testing this story. Your bug hunting and grammar feedback was invaluable. Additional thanks to Graham Nelson for creating Inform, and Emily Short for putting HelpRoutines.h into the public domain. Finally I want to thank you, the player, for coming on this adventure with me. >l The Maro River (in the canoe) I am in a canoe on the Maro river. My guide is with me, rowing his craft. In the canoe I can also see a trap (which is closed and empty), a fishing spear and a fishing net. My guide paddles with the oar. >x me I am Dr Ego. Purveyor of artifacts, seeker of treasure, and adventurous archeologist. Lightning flashes in the distance. >i I'm carrying: my satchel (being worn) a matchbook my journal my compass my fedora (being worn) my bullwhip (being worn) >x guide A native to Papua New Guinea, he seems to navigate this river like he has done it for all his years. Perhaps I should SAY HI. The air trembles with the rolling thunder. >hi That's not a verb I recognise. >say hi (to the guide) I introduce myself to my guide. "Nice to meet you, Dr Ego", he says with a grin, "I am Rompinjimp-Nanganbia Tiki. Please call me Rom." When I am ready, I can sit back and WAIT until we reach the shore. Rom looks across the salty water, into the distance. >ask rom about rom "Lived here all my life, just like my family has for generations." >ask rom about canoe "I have the canoe for many years now, built it myself," Rom says proudly. >ask rom about papua "Lived here all my life, just like my family has for generations." >ask rom about river "The ancient waters of the Maro will swallow you whole if you try to swim," he says mournfully. It may not look it, but the current is strong and the water is cold." Rom paddles with the oar. >ask rom about me Rom grins at me and nods. Rom paddles with the oar. >ask rom about trap "That, my friend, is a chicken trap. You set the trap - prop the door open with this wooden rod - and pull on the string to swing the door shut." >x rod A traditional fishing spear made from wood, it has three metal prongs at the business end. >x trap The trap is a crude box consisting of a wooden frame and some kind of netting covering the sides. One of the sides is openable and acts as a door. Rom paddles with the oar. >open it I would rather leave it alone. >ask about net I can't see any such thing. >ask rom about net "That is a cast net," he says, taking a moment to listen to the sound of the river. He continues, "I throw it out into the water, haul it back in." Rom paddles with the oar. >take all trap: The trap is not mine to take. fishing spear: The fishing spear is not mine to take. fishing net: The fishing net is not mine to take. >x oar The canoe is built from a hollowed-out log and wooden planks, it has a single lateral support float fastened to the hull on one side, to help stabilize the craft. >ask rom about oar "I have the canoe for many years now, built it myself," Rom says proudly. Rom paddles with the oar. >x water The cold water laps up against the sides of the craft. I remember writing facts about the river in my journal, I can read my NOTES ON THE RIVER to see them. >read notes I take my journal from my satchel. My journal is filled with my research notes. To consult my journal type NOTES ON . This can be abbreviated as J (J as in journal). To read about the Maro River, type J MARO. >j maro The Maro river flows from north-east to south-west into the Arafura Sea. It runs over 124 miles, or 200 kilometers, in length. The river is up to two-thirds of a mile, or one kilometer, wide. It is a complex system of swamps and oxbow lakes, hosting a large number of birds and reptiles. Rom looks across the salty water, into the distance. >ask rom about maro "The ancient waters of the Maro will swallow you whole if you try to swim," he says mournfully. It may not look it, but the current is strong and the water is cold." Rom paddles with the oar. >x matchbook It is a booklet of matches with red phosphorous heads, "Red Herring Lucifers" is printed on the back. >open it The matchbook is not something I can open. >x compass I take my compass from my satchel. My compass tells me which way north is. This helps me to navigate in the jungle, especially when lost. All I need to do is READ it. Rom notices my compass -- "My father had one just like that." >ask rom about father "He taught me how to build boats and fish, taught me everything to live and survive out here." >ask rom about compass "I don't need one, I know these waters and jungles quite well." Rom paddles with the oar. >read compass I am exactly where I need to be. "My father had one just like that." "We are almost there, Dr Ego", Rom says. >x journal My journal is filled with my research notes. To consult my journal type NOTES ON . This can be abbreviated as J (J as in journal). >notes on egg Chicken eggs, guinea fowl eggs, yam roots and karuka are popular foods in Papua New Guinea. A yam is a starchy edible tuber, it has a rough skin that is difficult to peel but readily softened by heating. The skins vary in color from dark brown to light pink. Karuka is a nut tree that is a cultivated crop, the fruit are more nutritious than coconuts and has been used as a major food source for over 30 millennia. Rom paddles with the oar. >notes on man-toomba I can't find anything in my journal about that topic. "Here we are," Rom says as the canoe lands on the shore. River Shore (in the canoe) I can now exit the canoe. In the canoe I can also see a trap (which is closed and empty), a fishing spear and a fishing net. >exit I get out of the canoe. River Shore The shore is wet and muddy, it runs from east to west. Rom sits in the canoe gazing out over the moving river, the salty water lapping up the sides of his craft -- Inside it is a trap, a fishing spear and a fishing net. An unexplored path is to the north. >take all trap: The trap is not mine to take. fishing spear: The fishing spear is not mine to take. fishing net: The fishing net is not mine to take. >save Ok. >x shore I can't see any such thing. >e I walk that way and soon realize there are no paths leading into the jungle, so I return to the site where the canoe landed, where I can see the path into the jungle. >w I walk that way and soon realize there are no paths leading into the jungle, so I return to the site where the canoe landed, where I can see the path into the jungle. >n Jungle Path I walk along the jungle path, it looks frequently used and is surrounded by dense vegetation. An unexplored path is to the west. The river shore is due south. >read compass I am exactly where I need to be. >w Clearing The jungle recedes here to create a natural clearing, the ground is firm and the area is surrounded by jungle vegetation. I have a clear view of the sky above. A large fig tree stands here, a monkey is sitting in it. A hut is due south. A jungle path is due east. >x tree The fig tree, also known as Ficus Obliqua, is taller than most of the surrounding jungle. The view from up there must be great. Lightning dances menacingly within the clouds above. >x monkey It is a small grey monkey with big brown eyes. It stares back at me. My ears ring from the sudden clap of a lightning strike. >talk to monkey Conversations have two forms: asking someone something, and telling them something. Try ASK the monkey ABOUT THE JUNGLE, or SAY HI. For more help on talking, type HELP TALKING. >say hi (to the monkey) "Whoop whoop!" it replies. >ask the monkey about the jungle "Whoop whoop!" it replies. >take all There is nothing to take. >x vegetation The jungle is dense and lush, and comprises various plants, shrubs and vines, with foliage of all shapes and sizes. >x ground The ground is below me. Thank heavens! It starts to rain. >s Bungalow I enter the decrepit hovel and immediately notice the missing roof, it has long since collapsed onto the floor, providing little protection from the elements. I can see some rubble here. There is an exit to the southwest. A clearing in the jungle is due north. I feel raindrops fall on my neck. >x rubble It is a pile of debris that used to be the roof. It now litters the floor. I wonder if there is anything useful in there. >search it I scrounge amid the rubble and disturb a giant centipede. The critter scurries out of sight. I continue my search and find a strip of canvas. I take it. I feel cold drops of rain fall on my cheek. >search it I find nothing in the rubble. I feel raindrops spatter on my head. >search it I find nothing in the rubble. >x canvas A strip of dirty canvas cloth the length of my arm. >sw Garden I enter a small garden, it looks abandoned. The plants in the garden have grown wild. I see vegetables and a couple of fruit trees. A hut is due northeast. >x vegetables The vegetable plants in the garden have grown wild without anybody around to harvest them. I notice some kind of tuber growing on the ground. >x tuber The tuber is partially exposed above ground. Lightning arcs across the sky. >take it (putting the journal into the satchel to make room) I reach down and pull on the leafy parts of the plant. A yam emerges from of the ground. I discard the leaves and keep the yam. >x vegetables The vegetable plants in the garden have grown wild without anybody around to harvest them. The sound of thunder rumbles overhead. >take vegetables I have no need for the vegetables. I feel the rain fall on my neck. >x trees I see a cherry tree, but it is not bearing any fruit. The tree next to it, however, has a bunch of bananas. I feel the rain spatter on my arms. >x bananas A bunch of wild bananas hang from the top of the tree. >take bananas The bananas are out of reach. >climb What do I want to climb? >tree (the fruit trees) I can't seem to climb up the banana tree, the trunk is too smooth and I slide back down. I feel cold drops of rain spatter on my back. >tie canvas to banana tree I would achieve nothing by this. I feel cold drops of rain fall on my cheek. >climb banana tree with canvas I only understood you as far as wanting to climb the banana. >i I'm carrying: a yam a strip of canvas my compass my satchel (being worn) my journal a matchbook my fedora (being worn) my bullwhip (being worn) I feel the rain spatter on my face. >x banana tree A bunch of wild bananas hang from the top of the tree. >use whip If I want to whip something, I should WHIP IT, like WHIP THE TREE. I feel cold drops of rain fall on my face. >whip the tree (the fruit trees) I take aim at the bunch of bananas, swing my arm in a smooth arch, and *SNAP* -- a banana drops to the ground. [I scored my first point! Type SCORE/FULL to list them.] >whip the tree (the banana) I don't need another banana right now. >take banana (putting the compass into the satchel to make room) Taken. I feel raindrops land on my face. >l Garden The plants in the garden have grown wild. I see vegetables and a couple of fruit trees. A hut is due northeast. >ne Bungalow I am inside a dilapidated bungalow. A garden is due southwest. A clearing in the jungle is due north. I feel cold drops of rain fall on my cheek. >n Clearing I am in a natural clearing, surrounded by jungle. A large fig tree stands here, a monkey is sitting in it. A hut is due south. A jungle path is due east. >give banana to monkey The creature smacks its lips at the sight of the banana, but hesitates to come near me. The rain peters out. >throw banana to monkey I only understood you as far as wanting to throw the banana. >drop banana Dropped. >s Bungalow I am inside a dilapidated bungalow. The monkey stares at the banana, then glares at me, looks back at the banana, it smacks its lips. >push banana Nothing obvious happens. The monkey edges closer to the banana while keeping one eye on me. >z Time passes. The monkey grabs the banana, stuffing its face with the delicious fruit. It seems distracted and left the compass lying on the ground. [I scored another point.] >take compass Taken. Engravings on the walls dance under the flicker of my torch. A stone altar is here in the room, the Golden Egg of Man-Toomba sits attractively on top of it! Some stairs leads upward. Hrmpf, this stone egg sure is heavy. >save Ok. >switch golden egg with stone egg I only understood you as far as wanting to switch the Golden Egg of Man-Toomba. >take golden egg The stone egg is too heavy for my satchel. I put it down instead. (putting the stone egg down to free up my hands) I have it! It is magnificent. The weight lifted from the altar triggers a pressure plate booby trap. Tens of tiny poisoned darts shoot out from holes hidden in the runed walls. I slump to the floor paralyzed, never to wake up again. *** I died *** In that game you scored 7 out of a possible 9, in 417 turns.
