Or skip tutorial if you already know how to play. about Dessert Island Adventure was made by Nils Fagerburg for the 2022 TALP Jam. This game was partially inspired by Arthur DiBianca's excellent The Wand which you should play instead as it's a much better game. Thanks to Amanda Walker for letting me steal the Bubbleberry bush from The Lonely Troll. A thousand thanks to my beta testers: Francine Fagerburg, Amanda Walker, Dee Cooke, Andrew Schultz, Sarah Hernu and Garry Francis. Without their help this game would be a mess. version Game version: talp22-10, RIFF version: messy. —sigh— People not following instructions makes tutorial writing so much harder. Anyway... For instance, to know more about the hot air balloon you could type examine the hot air balloon. A good first move to find out what's going on is to examine yourself. Type examine myself (or examine me). x balloon The balloon is taking you to a dessert island so you can fetch some ingredients for your mentor. Below the large balloon part is a basket which is the part you are currently standing in. Just one last thing, you can't put the game in an unwinnable state so experiment freely. Good luck! x me You, Orange Mehringer, are apprenticed to Mary Hollywood, the famous pastry wizard. As part of your midterm exam you have to find as many magic ingredients as possible from a dessert island. If you don't know what to do, it's often a good idea to try examining as many things as you can. i You have: - a spatula - a grimoire x spatula It's your magic spatula. It's made of vine wood and has a dragon heartstring core. There are more items to examine! To see what you are carrying you can take inventory (or just i for short). x grimoire Your personal book of magic. You filled it with the spells you've learned. ... an island comes into view on the horizon. Most commands to manipulate items will be in the form VERB OBJECT. For example to read the grimoire you should type read grimoire. read grimoire Say the magic word to charge the spatula then point it at the target. sesame use to open cana turns water into crème pâtissière hike to instantly prove a dough bake cooks raw dough in a flash Suddenly you hear a loud *CLANK* and smoke starts pouring out of the mechanical pilot. You'll want to look into that. To see the location description again you can type look (or just l). l Hot Air Balloon You are in the basket of a hot air balloon, beside the mechanical pilot out of which some dark smoke is pouring. Far below is the Sapphire Sea. In the distance is an island. x pilot Dark smoke is pouring out of the mechanical pilot's access panel. When examining things you'll often learn about new things you can examine. You can examine the access panel (or just x panel). x panel The access panel guards the insides of the mechanical pilot. It is closed. To manipulate items use VERB OBJECT constructions. So to open the panel you can type... well... open the panel. open panel You don't see an obvious way to open the panel. You'll need to find another way to open the panel. There was a spell for opening in your grimoire. You could say sesame to cast it. sesame I don't understand. say sesame “SeSaMe”, you exclaim! Your spatula starts glowing red. Great! Now you just need to point the spatula at the panel. Since that's a mouthful (a keyboardful?) you can also simply type point panel (or even just p panel). point panel You point your spatula at the access panel. An orb of red light leaves the spatula and hits the access panel. As the panel swings open, a bunch of items clatter out onto the floor of the basket. On the plus side the smoke subsides. You can use the look (or just l) command to see what fell out of the mechanical pilot. l Hot Air Balloon You are in the basket of a hot air balloon, beside the open mechanical pilot. Far below is the Sapphire Sea. In the distance is an island. There's a big brass gear, a small bronze gear, and a flux capacitor here. To pick up an item you can type e.g. pick up the cheese sandwich (or take capacitor or get gear). You should pick up all the parts that fell out of the mechanical pilot. get all (The big brass gear) You pick up the big brass gear. (The small bronze gear) You pick up the small bronze gear. (The flux capacitor) You pick up the flux capacitor. A few commands require both a direct and an indirect object. You can't just put an object; but you can put it in or on something. Try putting the parts back into the mechanical pilot. put big gear in pilo (Assuming you meant the mechanical pilot) You place the big brass gear back into the mechanical pilot. put big gear in pilot You don't have a big gear. put small gear in pilot You place the small bronze gear back into the mechanical pilot. put capacitator in pilot You don't have a capacitator. put capacitor in pilot You place the flux capacitor back into the mechanical pilot. The machinery looks good now. You should close the access panel to restart the mechanical pilot. close panel You close the access panel. The mechanical pilot whirrs back to life. And not a moment too soon as the island was getting perilously close. The balloon lands itself in the middle of a large field and you hop out. Field You are in a large field where the hot air balloon has landed. To the north is a forest. There's a red chrysanthemum here. Neighboring locations will often be described using a compass direction (north, south, east and west). To visit them, you can just type the direction or just the first letter of the direction. All the following do the same thing: go to the forest, north, n. x chrysanthemum (Assuming you meant the red chrysanthemum) Wait a minute! This isn't actually a flower. It's a cookie that's shaped like one! You don't actually need to type the whole name of every item. In fact you don't even need to use the noun; in this case you could have just typed x red. take cookie You pick up the red chrysanthemum cookie. You found a magic ingredient! n Marmalade Forest Between the make-believe trees is a cottage cheese cottage. Through the trees you can see a lighthouse to the west. A mountain is to the east. You copy the spell into your grimoire. take not (Assuming you meant the scribbled note) You take the scribbled note from the drawer. The pronoun it refers to the last item you referred to (the scribbled note) so you could have simply typed take it instead. take plum You take the sugar plum from the drawer. You found another magic ingredient! Well done, you found a magic ingredient! This is the end of the tutorial. I might still pop up to offer a hint but I won't be guiding you anymore. For example you can type: get chef's hat wear it open the fridge put the cake in the oven Some frequently used commands have abbreviations: instead of take inventory you can simply type i, to move around you can type the first letter of the direction (e.g. n instead of go north, in, up, ...), the look command (which redisplays the current room) can be abbreviated to l, and, most importantly, to examine an item you can type x (the item). You almost never have to type the full object description or use articles. For instance, if the game tells you there is a shiny white diamond here, you can type x shiny, or x white, or x diamond to examine it. Generally, you begin by examining objects around you, examining yourself (x me), and seeing what, if anything, you are carrying. You shouldn't need it, but if you change your mind you can undo your previous actions. hint Alas, the author didn't have time to add an in-game hint system. But do feel free to ask for hints over on the Interactive Fiction Community Forum. x portal A crystal portal set in the back wall of the cave.
