He's the owner and only he handles the truck rentals, but somehow you need to move a lot of boxes around for a "self" storage business with no visible customers. For the record, nobody knows who Al is and you're not actually sure what's up with the psychic readings. Why couldn't you have found a job at the mall like everyone else? Anyhow, you walked in, and Joe handed you a list. He seemed in a hurry to leave, but whatever, the sooner you finish the sooner you can get away with a nap in the break room. Break Room This is also the storage room, but you are most interested in the incongruous overstuffed arm chair in the corner. You can go east, and you could go south, but that's a door labeled "Seance Room" which you've never seen opened. A closed hatch in the ceiling leads to the attic. On the counter are your backpack (closed), a pile of rental forms, a bag of padlocks, and a box of keys. >x me As cute as ever in a band shirt, black work pants, and a silver necklace. >x shirt You thought this hardcore band was so awesome that you bought the shirt, but you were also so drunk you don't remember their name and you've never been able to decipher the mix of runes and graffiti. >* nice That's not a verb I recognize. >x pants You bought these at the hardware store. >x necklace A plain silver chain from your grandmother. And powerful. They lay him down gently, and arrange an amulet around his neck. A pale green and a reddish brown stone. Then they deliberately cover his body in rocks, laughing and crying and talking to each other in a language you don't understand or even recognize. The aluminum step ladder leads up the the hatch. On the counter are a pile of rental forms, a bag of padlocks, and a box of keys. >w You can't go that way. >s Seance Room Like much of this building, the room is filled with many boxes. A cabinet stands alone on an intricate hand-knotted rug in the center of the room. An open door leads north. >* Hey, the door opened You seem to want to talk to someone, but I can't see whom. >x boxes Many boxes, all stacked around the edges of the room. >search boxes You find nothing of interest. >move boxes They are fixed in place. >x rug A geometric design in reds, blues, and browns, with just a hint of mustard. >look under rug You find nothing of interest. >take it That's hardly portable. >x cabinet Is this what "discount psychic readings" means? It's one of those old fortune teller machines, featuring the upper torso of a turbaned lady named "Princess Ioana" behind glass and a slot for quarters. >open it (first unlocking the fortune teller machine) You lack a key that fits the fortune teller machine. >i You are carrying: a bag of salt an amulet a task list your backpack (open) your car key four quarters a lip gloss a course catalog a price list a crystal turtle a wrist watch two keys: a rusty key and an aluminum key two padlocks: a rusty padlock and an aluminum padlock >put quarter in machine (first taking the quarter) Cachunk. Princess Ioana opens her eyes and moves mechanically for a moment, as if she is focusing on something invisible. Then she closes them again, and the machine spits out a little card, which you take. >read card Ioana decrees: The time draws nigh. The storm is here. A restless spirit walks. Only you can... >take it You already have that. >put quarter in machine (first taking the quarter) Cachunk. Princess Ioana opens her eyes and moves mechanically for a moment before closing them again. The machine spits out another little card, which you take. >read card Which do you mean, the second fortune card or the first fortune card? >second Ioana decrees: ...save the even side of the 4900 block of North Park Street in East Forestdale. Princess Ioana opens her eyes and moves mechanically for a moment before closing them again, but nothing comes out of the machine. >take fourth You can't see any such thing. >n Break Room The open seance room door leads south. You expected something valuable (or embarrassing) to merit a door like that, but it's only an assortment of boxes in a small natural cave. The only light comes from the open vault door leading south. A tunnel slopes sharply down to the east. Another card, like the ones from Princess Ioana, lies on the ground here. >read card Which do you mean, the fourth fortune card, the third fortune card, the second fortune card, or the first fortune card? >fourth Ioana decrees: This is the place. Go deeper and put things right. >* umm That's not a verb I recognize. >take it Taken. >e Deeper Cave A larger cave, only dimly lit by the light that trickles in from the tunnel that slopes up to the west. There is a large opening just too high to reach to the north. Deepest Chamber This chamber is lit by some sort of cold blue bioluminescence. You can exit to the south. There is a stone cairn in the center of the room. The world around you fades away, and you have a vision... You see Joe enter this cave, carrying a flashlight. He sets it aside when he notices a stone cairn, and digs through it. He pulls out an amulet and puts it in his pocket. Then he crudely rebuilds the pile, picks up his flashlight, and leaves. You blink and return to the present. >put amulet in cairn You return the amulet to its rightful place. Without words, the spirit thanks you. He is grateful for your help. As you make your way upstairs, you find the final box amidst the junk in the basement. You set it out on the loading dock just as the sun rises in the clearing sky. *** You have set things right *** If you enjoyed Midnight at Al's Self Storage, Truck Rentals, and Discount Psychic Readings, our protagonist will return soon in a new story!
