Among the objects that stand out most clearly in your mind are your bookcase, your brother's adventure chest, and a laid out chess set acting as the centerpiece of the Cabin nestled nicely in the center of the room on an old oak table. The chess pieces appear angry as if they're getting ready for battle. A window gives you a good view of the wildlife of the woods. Right outside your Cabin is The Heart of the Forest. >i You are carrying nothing. >x me You look yourself over. Ever the younger brother, you notice your short stature immediately. A consequence of having such small legs and torso. You have muscles, but you can't see them from the outside, and worst of all your strength pails in comparison to that of your brother's. You were never fond of your looks, not that they should matter much anyway. You have a strong connection to faith and to God. You like to pray. >pray (You get down on your knees and pray) "I pray for all those who are orphans, that they may find a good home and a caring family and... for my brother" >pray (You get down on your knees and pray) "I pray for all those who are suffering from addictions, for all those who feel helpless, and... for my brother" >x bishop The image of the chess board and all of the pieces from the last game you ever played has been burned into your memory, but the visage that stands before you today does not match that image. You look more clearly and you realize..... FIVE OF THE CHESS PIECES ARE MISSING! Suddenly, you hear roaring laughter and the entire cabin begins to quake. Your beloved mementos appear to be under a kind of spell. The chess pieces, your table, the chest, the bookcase all fly around the Cabin spinning and jumping in the air. You feel so dizzy as your world continues to spin. After a few moments, the quaking stops. Everything moves back to it's original positions as if nothing had happened. A figure outside the window catches your attention.... It can't be! [Your score has just gone up by two points.] >x figure You can't see any such thing. >x window You say aloud, "That face looked so much like his, but it cannot be him." The mysterious figure has vanished. >take bishop No, I can't take them. I want to leave everything just the way it was during last game he and I played together. >take all window: You can't take that. It's stuck in place. Untold Story: Taken. Bible: Taken. >read untold You skim through your brothers book. All of the pages are unwritten. Strangely enough, in the cover page, the only page that was finished, your brother had attributed the writing of the book to both you and him. Perhaps the story will yet have a chance to be told. [Your score has just gone up by one point.] >x it The book has very special meaning for you. The title, no longer visible due to the dust covering it's once beautiful cover image is simply, "The Untold Story." A story that will forever remained untold. Your brother desired nothing more than to write a book of his own. Nearly a year ago, he finally began to craft his story...... He never had a chance to finish it. >x bible A gift from your beloved parents bestowed on you not a year before their passing. Well worn from use, it has left you comforted on many a restless night. >read it You turn to the page containing your favorite verse, "So God so loved the World, He gave His only Begotten Son so that all who believe in Him may not perish but have everlasting life." >read it You turn to the page containing your favorite verse, "So God so loved the World, He gave His only Begotten Son so that all who believe in Him may not perish but have everlasting life." >x bookcase The bookcase is a fine piece of furniture crafted by the strong and sturdy arms of your late brother. Not many books have ever stayed in your bookcase for very long. Many of your old books have been lost or stolen by the animals of the forest to be used for shelter. The badgers are the chief culprits among the animals of the woods. >search it The bookcase is empty. >x chest This is your brother's prized chest. He found it in a nearby cave a few years back. He supposed that an old explorer had passed away and left it there. He took it as his own. His supplies for going on adventures are kept securely locked away in the chest. >open it It seems to be locked. >unlock it What do you want to unlock the chest with? >key You can't see any such thing. >search it You can't see inside, since the chest is closed. >x heart You can't see any such thing. >l Cabin You look around your room, spotting all of the little mementos you've held onto for all these years. Right outside your Cabin is The Heart of the Forest. >x the heart of the forest You can't see any such thing. >x forest You say aloud, "That face looked so much like his, but it cannot be him." The mysterious figure has vanished. >x chess Which do you mean, the chess set or the chess pieces? >set What do you want to set? >x set Your very favorite game. A love of the game was shared mutually by your older brother. Your chess set has received no attention since the last game you and your bother played together. Your brother's voice echoes in your head as you look at the chess pieces, "like warriors on the battlefield defending their positions." He would always say that before every game. The chess pieces are important to you. As you look at them, you get a sour feeling in your heart. Something doesn't feel right. >play chess You can't see any such thing. >play set You can't see any such thing. >take set That's hardly portable. >take pieces No, I can't take them. I want to leave everything just the way it was during last game he and I played together. >move pieces It is fixed in place. >out The image you saw in the window is nowhere in sight. Something isn't right. You investigate your surroundings and you realize that something feels very different about the old forest. You can't quite make it out, but it appears more mysterious as if a new presence has permeated your woods. In the distance you can make out a large gray tower resembling a rook. That was never there before. That must be the source of the disturbances. To make matters worse, five of your precious chess pieces are missing. You cannot stand to be without them. You decide to look for your missing chess pieces, explore the forest, and get to that tower at any cost. The Heart of the Forest An enormous tree reaches high into the sky, its branches not visible from your position down below. You see a glint coming from a pile of dirt near the trunk of the tree. Off in the distance you can hear the sounds of a great beast. You can barely make out a large tower far in the north. The forest continues in all directions, but narrow paths appear to mark the way. Paths open wide into three directions. To the east, you see only darkness, to the west, the path winds eventually meeting what appears to be a cave, and to the north, all appears much brighter and you can make out the edge of the forest. You can climb up the tree to reach the Upper Branches. You can see a lantern here. >take lantern Taken >x glint You can't see any such thing. >x dirt It's a big pile of dirt. Something could be hiding inside. In the pile of dirt is a gold coin. >take coin (You gently take the coin). [Your score has just gone up by one point.] >x tree (the tree) The tree is very old, but yet it still retains its youthful strength. Your brother has told you stories about the great disasters this old relic has weathered. It's a testament to the power of the forest. On the trunk of the tree, you find find a carving you've never seen before. >x carving "Living in the shadow of another is a disease. It prevents you from growing and coming into your own." Next to the carving you see an image of your brother and yourself. You go your separate ways. Someone left this here for you. >u Upper Branches The view from the Upper Branches isn't too spectacular. Leaves surround you on either side and a nest rests nearby. You can see a creepy crawly creature nearby. "Yuck!" It's a caterpillar. As you look around while sitting on a branch, you notice a vine leading to the Treetop. >x nest The bird's nest is elegantly crafted. Pieces of paper and twigs compose its structure. You look at the paper and it reads, "The greatest victory is that which requires no battle." You smile, "Ahh, so you're the culprit." There's something in the bird's nest that is very precious to you. In the bird's nest are a rook and a white egg. >take rook As you begin to reach your arm over to take the chess piece, suddenly a bird appears on your shoulder. It's a falcon with bright red eyes. The creature appears possessed. It quickly rushes forward and grabs the precious chess piece with it's claws. It then rushes out of the tree heading north. You scramble to move after it, but without success. The creature has already escaped. It flew off far to the north to the Field. The bird will likely come looking for the egg. If you place it in the Field, perhaps the Falcon will come after it. >take egg Taken [Your score has just gone up by two points.] >u Treetop The Treetop offers a much better view of your surroundings. Endless beauty in all directions. Standing beside you is a beautiful, but oddly placed flower. Off in the distance you can see a large tower. You can hear something. Something's disrupting nature's order. >take flower Taken [Your score has just gone up by two points.] >listen You can once again hear the angry howl of the unseen beast. It's vicious yells are becoming stronger and more prolonged. It's getting ready for something. >x flower An oddly colored flower. The head of the flower, somewhat resembling that of a tulip, is comprised of six colors, including red, blue, orange, purple, yellow, and most peculiarly, a slight shade of brown. Slightly above the bottom of the stem, there is a halo of sorts composed of the stem itself having branched out to make the unusual shape of the flower. The flower appears to be very special. Perhaps given the proper care it can grow into something extraordinary. >l Treetop The Treetop offers a much better view of your surroundings. Endless beauty in all directions. All natural sunlight is cut off in this section of the woods. There's something on a large boulder nearby. It's a bottle. Maybe you should take a closer look at it. Inside from the forest is the Bear's Den. To the west is the Heart of the Forest. >take bottle Taken [Your score has just gone up by two points.] >x it It's so cold. The forest continues in all directions, but narrow paths appear to mark the way. Paths open wide into three directions. To the east, you see only darkness, to the west, the path winds eventually meeting what appears to be a cave, and to the north, all appears much brighter and you can make out the edge of the forest. Nothing is as it once was. "Everything has changed," you think to yourself. As you take in the foliage, you gaze upon a familiar sight. A figure you last saw through the window of your cabin. The words again rush to your mind, "No, it can't...." Before you can finish your thought, you feel the ground beneath your feet begin to break apart. You grasp at any nearby structure to keep you aloft, but to no avail. You fall. (You fall into the massive hole.) Who could have been able to dig a hole this size in such a short amount of time? It wasn't here yesterday. You hear a voice say, "What ta heck was that?" (The Dwarf sighs)You can hear the Dwarf say under his breath, "Me miss The Dwarven City" . >ask dwarf about dwarven city "I don't wanna talk bout tat." The Dwarf jumps up and down. He's full of energy for a Dwarf. >ask dwarf about the dwarven city Thee ol city was really pretty. There be so many sights ta see. Dwarven cave rocks be used lots. A glowing cave rock on the side of the passage shines brightly. Drawn on the edge of the passage is an image that greatly surprises you. Next to the image is a distinct crack in the wall that appears to yield something inside of it. To the west is a round wooden door that leads to the House of the Dwarf. To the east is the massive man made hole in the ground. >w The House of the Dwarf The Dwarf lives in a small room. There's not really much here. The wall in the back is very important. There is a ladder in the room that leads up to the Cave. >u The Cave There's nothing here, but there's a feeling in the air. Something is very peculiar about this part of the Cave. You'd hate to use such a device but you have a feeling that it will come in handy. Setting it is simple enough. All you need to do is set the trap, and the trap will do the rest. You feel an electrical current moving through the trap. It's very potent. (The heavy rain continues to come down) >x tracks The prints in the ground are larger than your hand, and they lie deep within the Earth telling you that the beast must be both large and strong. Fear of doubt rises in your heart, but you push it back and say, "No! I can do this. The tracks head south." (Lightening strikes) >s You follow the tracks south. There is now a frightening silence. There's a terror in the air. A terror you haven't felt in nearly a year. Fear amidst rage swells up inside of you. You shake it off, "No It's not worth it. I'm going to find Babbit. I won't let it happen again. I CAN'T LET IT HAPPEN!" (The heavy rain continues to come down) >x tracks The tracks continue east without ceasing or switching direction. The Great Beast had a goal. (The thunder booms) >save Ok. >e The tracks continue on and now head east to the most frightening part of the Forest. Surprisingly, you hear nothing. Not the great beast nor the sounds of the other wild creatures of the forest. Though usually it is so dark, hundreds of fireflies are acting as your a source of light. You are able to proceed. You have the light source, now you need the courage. The Mysterious Forest There's darkness all around you, but luckily, you have the lantern to light your way. All light is cut off in this section of the woods. To the west is the heart of the Mysterious Forest. Inside from the forest is the Bear's Den. (Lightening strikes) >e You can't go that way. (The thunder booms) >in "Well, this is it. There's no turning back now." You breathe deeply, look at the path that lies before you, and walk boldly into the Bear's Den. A horrifying sight lies before you. A bear, larger than any you could imagine lies sleeping. "That's him," you say to yourself. You'll never forget the features of the creature. Another sight catches your attention. Next to the evil violent bear is the sweet and innocent badger. "She did nothing to him. How could he do this to her?" You clench your fists hard. "I can't. I can't resort to violence even violence against him I just have to pray that he doesn't wake up. Bear's Den A horrifying sight lies before you. You think, "How could I have done this to creation?" You feel a hand on your shoulder. "It had to be done for everyone's sake. You just hope you brother approves. You suddenly remember that the badgers have a chess piece. You should probably return to the tree where Bobbit left his note. It was cloudy and bitterly cold. Your brother didn't mind it though it disturbed you greatly for there was a darkness, a sinister presence in the air. A roar could be heard nearby, soft but still present. It was a bear. Your brother had hunted bears before, but this bear was different. He was larger and much fiercer. There was something about him as if he were cursed. At that time, the sun was going down. It looked as if there was a glint of red in his eyes. Your brother said, "Wait here. I'm going to bring this beast down once and for all." You remember trying to talk him out of it, but there was no talking him out of this. This was the same bear that killed a lot of the wildlife that your brother often hunted. This was a personal mission for him. He climbed the top of a nearby tree and strung his bow. You remember going back inside the Cabin to watch. The next thing you saw shocked you. The bear charged the tree causing your brother to fall. You desperately scrambled to open the door and go outside but fear stopped you. You couldn't get the door open as if it were locked. But it wasn't. It was the fear, a shade so black that it covered the knob of the door. You were helpless and hopeless. After several moments you found the strength to open the door and force yourself outside, but it was too late. The next day you buried your brother and you hadn't seen or heard from the bear since, that is until you heard a roar in the forest earlier today. You continue to look at the grave and you see a presence. A figure clothed all in white. It looks back at you, smiles and vanishes. You think again, "It can't be" Well, maybe it can. You say a prayer before the grave and continue on your adventure. >pray (You look at your brother's grave. But WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TAKE HIM FROM ME! WHY!? HE'S ALL I HAD LEFT!....... Now I have nothing." Between the tears now pouring down from your eyes, you can hear a voice, saying "Peace will find you, young one." The beauty of the voice catches you off guard. Most importantly, you may TAKE or GET items, and (when you are tired of them) DROP them again. INVENTORY (abbreviated I) will list the items you are currently holding. There are usually assorted things you may do with these objects. OPEN, CLOSE, WEAR, EAT, LOCK, and UNLOCK are especially common. Occasionally, you will find that the game does not recognize the name of an object even though it has been described as being in the room with you. If this is the case, the object is just there for scenery, and you may assume that you do not need to interact with it. Please press SPACE to continue. Movement between rooms is possible; movement within a room does not always amount to anything. >WALK OVER TO THE DESK is rarely a useful sort of command. The game keeps track of this, and many puzzles have to do with where things are -- in the player's possession, lying on the floor of the room, on a table, in a box, etc. Please press SPACE to continue. Space Containment > Types of Action Other Characters Space Containment > Types of Action Other Characters Space Containment Types of Action > Other Characters Space Containment Types of Action > Other Characters Other characters in IF games are sometimes rather limited. On the other hand, there are also games in which character interaction is the main point of the game. You should be able to get a feel early on for the characters -- if they seem to respond to a lot of questions, remember what they're told, move around on their own, etc., then they may be fairly important. If they have a lot of stock responses and don't seem to have been the game designer's main concern, then they are most likely present either as local color or to provide the solution to a specific puzzle or set of puzzles. Characters in very puzzle-oriented games often have to be bribed, threatened, or cajoled into doing something that the player cannot do -- giving up a piece of information or an object, reaching something high, allowing the player into a restricted area, and so on. If there's something you want to do, but the game doesn't seem to understand you, try alternative wordings. Try variations. Sometimes an action doesn't work, but does produce some kind of unusual result. These are often indications that you're on the right track, even if you haven't figured out quite the right approach yet. Pressing the red button alone may only cause a grinding noise from inside the wall, so perhaps pressing the blue and then the red will open the secret door. Consider the genre of the game. I want to leave everything just the way it was during last game he and I played together. >put rook in set (Rook in the chess set) That can't contain things. >x table The oak table is an odd piece of furniture due to all of the drawings carved into its frame. Crafted into the legs of the table are two intriguing carvings. On the right leg is something you term Faith Carving. On the left leg is an image you term Warrior's Carving. Atop the table is your chess set that is in mid-play. In the drawer of the table are some of your possessions. [Your score has just gone up by one point.] >x quiver The quiver is crafted using the furs of many of your brother's previous "achievements". >x bow The bow is a fine piece of art, at least to your brother's eyes. You've struggled to see past the death brought about by its use. On the bow is etched, the warrior's spirit. Your only experience with the bow comes from years of watching your brother use it. It seems simple enough. You just simply shoot something with the bow. >pour potion on bow Your bow now has magical properties. What appeared to be an empty room is, in fact, a Wizard's Study. Wizard's Study This is actually a magical Wizard's Study. There's an unnatural light in this room. No source can be found. There's just a brightness. It must be magic of some kind. You can now see a desk in the rear portion of the room and a chest off to its side. Whoever is here, they've been able to watch you the entire time. You look straight and looking back at you is a man clocked in purple garments. On the garments are the symbol of a wizard. No pointed hat sits upon his head, but you can tell, he's the one behind the chaos in the woods, the corruption of animals, and the twisting of the forest itself. It's time to end this chess game. The Wizard summons three orbs to his side. One orb is red, one orb is blue, and one orb is green. The orbs jump in front of the Wizard to protect him. He summons his spells with such grace, but there's a sinister look in his eyes. There's something peculiar about each orb. You think to yourself, "I better be careful about which one I attack." >shoot green orb You have to shoot something with the bow. >shoot green orb with bow (You strike at the heart of the green orb) You can hear the cries of the powerful wizard. His agony is heartbreaking, but then you look at all the damage he's caused. It summons fury in your heart, but you ask it to fade away. It's not worth it. All of the orbs fade away into the shadows. Now defenseless, it's time to strike at the heart of this madness. [Your score has just gone up by two points.] >shoot wizard You have to shoot something with the bow. >shoot wizard with bow (You strike the heart of the Wizard) The Wizard still stands but he cannot move. He tries to come after you, but he can't. The Wizard gives you one last look filled with fury. Your response.... "Checkmate." The Wizard vanished into a puff of smoke. The Wizard is no more, he was vanquished. The observatory begins to fade away. Suddenly you see the mementos of your Cabin appear before you. You're back in your Cabin. A familiar figure dressed in white enters the room. A figure that has walked with you through much of your journey today. It's your brother. "Congratulations, you've beaten me. I was allowed one day to return to Earth. I came here on a mission. I wanted to rescue you. You've let yourself be trapped here without me. I set up this little chess game as a way of setting you free from your prison. Your decisions on this day, they are a part of what defines you. In that moment, you do what you believe is right. That's all that matters that you make yourself who you are. When you lost me, you also lost yourself. I know in my heart that you have found yourself again and will continue on this journey as long as your feet will carry you." The spirit smiles and embraces you before vanishing into the air. You look back on all of the events of the day, and you realize that you determine what you are at every given moment, and that you don't have to live in the shadow of others. You have your own story to tell. Tears fall from your eyes. You wipe them away and struggle to finally say "Goodbye my brother." You decide to leave the Forest... and your precious mementos behind. All that you will carry with you is The Untold Story. Now the story can be told, but this time it'll be your story. *** You've won the game! *** In that game you scored 83 out of a possible 100, in 741 turns, earning you the rank of Queen.
