Introduction:

The king is mad, dangerously so! - Someone has stolen the "Sacred Shovel", a magical artefact that holds great powers. He has sent a multitude of men (one of which includes you!) out to help search for it in the hope that one will find it and return it to him. He has promised great reward for the first man to complete the task and return his prized artefact.

A word from the author:

I usually find it difficult to finish writing a game; usually they get so long I lose sight of the plot and never get to the end without either getting bored or making things so complex the end seems too far away. So I tried to come up with a short story, with a beginning, a middle and an end, to attempt to get something of a workable game in inform7. We had recently acquired a kitten and my son was a little wary about stroking it. It gave me the idea of a game in which. to complete it, you needed to befriend a cat. And so, "The Sacred Shovel of Athenia" was born. It's not a very long game and the puzzles are fairly simple, but it is a fully working game, and my son enjoyed playing it.

 P.S. He is also happy to play with our cat now (who is no longer a kitten anymore) but it does sometimes swipe at you if he is not wanting attention (the cat, that is; not my son!) -- AG

It's quite heavy but you manage it, all those gym trips seem to have paid off!

A strange contraption is strapped to your wrist. It looks a bit like a watch and has the word "catometer" printed on its face. Also on the face of the unit is a needle that moves in an arc over a series of different coloured segments. Going from left to right the segments are red, orange, yellow, blue, and green. A sad cat face is on the left near the red segment and a happy cat face is on the right near the green segment.  The needle is currently pointing at the red segment.

The cat is mostly black, but has white paws, like little boots and gloves. It has a white dinner shirt of fur under his chin and just under his nose is a little white "moustache" making him look rather distinguished. All he is missing is the bow tie.

In a Meadow

The cat hunkers down in a crouched pose and then leaps for the toy mouse. As he pounces on it his claws catch the mouse and it flies into the air. The cat catches it again, he seems pleased. The catometer vibrates against your wrist and the needle rises. An alarm sounds inside the catometer as the needle touches the green segment.

The cat starts scratching at the gap under the shed door, probably looking for mice.

On a Hill
You are standing on a jagged hill overlooking a muddy meadow. Birds are singing and the sun is shining hazily. Nearby is a cracked path heading down the hill to the south. The apex of the hill is to the north up a steep climb.

Someone has planted a shovel into a section of mud here.

It really is HEAVY, much more so than the sword. You now have the scared shovel of Athenia once again.

As you take the shovel the jagged hill begins to tremble and a broad shadow covers the ground. Appearing from the east, from a previously unseen pathway, bounds an enormous ogre. He growls at the cat, who cowers down with a whimper, and then he turns to you. "The Shovel is MINE!", he screams and he snatches it from your grasp. He grabs you and drags you up the hill. As you reach the summit, he drops you in a heap and starts dancing around, throwing boxing punches with one hand while wielding the sacred shovel with the other.

The cat follows, but looks worried.

Top of a Hill
You have reached the summit of a jagged hill. In the distance to the north you can see the top of a foreboding castle, rising through some low lying clouds. Below is a craggy section leading down to the south. A lesser trodden pathway can be seen to the west heading to a heavenly village.

The ogre stops mid boxing move, and for the first time actually notices you. He growls and lifts the shovel high above his head. With a grimace he aims the shovel towards you and brings it down, luckily narrowly missing you. Sadly, for the cat, the shovel catches one of of his paws. He darts off into a nearby bush, whimpering. The catometer vibrates against your wrist and the needle drops.

From nowhere the tip of the shovel flies past your head. It misses, but you stumble and bump into the ogre. In turn the ogre reverses the direction of the shovel and attempts to attack you again. Unfortunately, for the cat, the shovel hits a large stone on its way through which flies into the cats head knocking it to the floor. The catometer vibrates against your wrist and the needle drops.

Your friend the cat is lying on the ground, his head to one side. Blood is slowly trickling from his forehead.

An ogre is bobin' and weavin' around the jagged hill, like a bad impression of Lennox Lewis. Every now and then he staggers, seemingly off-balance.

Stuck in the ground is a tall sign post. It points north, south and west.

EXITS ARE: north, south, west, and down.

His body is limp and he flops into your arms as you pick him up. He barely has enough strength, but he manages to lift his head and mews. You slowly stroke him, but he makes no more sound. However, the needle on the catometer goes back to the green section.

You head down the jagged hill and head north towards the foreboding castle. Eventually you reach the castle gates and hear a fanfare of trumpets (a bit over the top you think). The king comes out to greet you. He takes the shovel and thanks you (you were expecting a bit more of a reward frankly!). You leave the castle and head home to tender the cat, who already is looking a whole lot happier. He purrs at you and nuzzles his head into your arms.
