> about This game is an entry in the ADRIFT GameJam January 2022, organized by DazaKiwi on the ADRIFT forum. All entries must have a WWII setting and to begin with, the player must first escape a vehicle (an elevator in this game) and afterwards reach safety. The game must have a maximum of four locations. Thanks to Larry Horsfield and Olaf Nowacki for testing the game! The elevator reaches the first floor. Somebody just pushed the call button on the sixth floor! > undo Undone. In the elevator You are in a cramped elevator lit from a lamp in the ceiling. But in 1942, this is state of the art. There is a panel with buttons left of you. It looks as if the box can be opened from the back but you don't have access to the back of the lamp here in the elevator. You see no guards but you hear shouting from the stairwell. Quickly you pass the stairwell to the last short flight of stairs leading up to the roof. Slowly (because of your knee injury), you climb the stairs to the roof, while you hear the guards shouting in the stairwell. You reach the top of the stairs and you open the door to the roof slowly, as you know there is a guard up here with binoculars, looking for threats in the distance. You walk through the door onto the roof and try to close it silently. Unfortunately, before the door is fully closed, one of the guards below shout: "I saw the door to the roof being closed! Let's get up there!" The guard on the roof hears the shouting and turns towards the door to the stairwell. You are not able to hide in time so he sees you and shouts: "Hey! What are you doing up here?" Briefly, you think of a good explanation when suddenly the guards from below storm through the door and arrest you. (you may be able to press any key to proceed on some systems) Prologue The German Resistance consisted of small, isolated groups that were unable to mobilize widespread political opposition. Still, successful disclosure of information regarding Nazi armaments factories to the Allies occurred. You are such a brave soul and you have managed to come very close to Hitler's inner circle. During a meeting in Berlin, Spring 1942, you will have the opportunity to get some crucial information. The meeting is held on the ground floor of a nine-storey building. However, it is believed that your secret affiliation has just been compromised and that this news will soon reach Hitler and his most trusted men around him. But the meeting is too important to skip. Thus, the German Resistance has an escape plan for you: As soon as you have received the much needed information, you will leave the meeting room. However, the front door is heavily guarded so you will have to take the elevator to the roof, where a parachute has been hidden. You must then parachute down to the nearby park where the Resistance will have a car waiting for you... So here you are at the meeting, and you have just received the crucial information that the Allies need. You stand up, put your right hand on your stomach as if you are sick and say: "Sorry! I will be back in a minute.." Very quickly you walk out the door and as you do so, you hear Hitler's voice: "Stop him! He must not leave the building!". You jump into the elevator and hit the button for the top floor. A guard almost manages to reach the elevator before the door is fully closed and the elevator starts moving. Luckily, this elevator is too fast for the guards to catch up. Let's just hope that no one upstairs pushes the call button... Click on the command field and hit Enter.... Special commands: HELP, VOCAB, HINTS, ABOUT In the elevator You are in a cramped elevator lit from a lamp in the ceiling. But in 1942, this is state of the art. There is a panel with buttons left of you. When the elevator stops, you can leave by going south. The elevator moves upwards. > push 4 You press button 4 and the button lights up. The elevator reaches the first floor. Somebody just pushed the call button on the sixth floor! > push 5 You press button 5 and the button lights up. The elevator moves upwards. > push 6 Button 6 is already lit. The elevator reaches the second floor. > undo Undone. You press button 5 and the button lights up. The elevator moves upwards. > push 7 You press button 7 and the button lights up. The elevator reaches the second floor. > push lamp Nothing prevents the lamp from being pushed up through the ceiling as it is simply resting on the sides of the hole in the ceiling. Thus, you manage to push the lamp up and to the side. There is now a big hole in the ceiling which you can GO UP through. The elevator moves upwards. > u You move up. On top of the elevator You are on top of the elevator. The lamp is lying here beside the hole you came up through. As long as the lamp hasn't been replaced, you can see most of the elevator. The elevator reaches the third floor. The walls are whizzing by as the elevator moves. > replace lamp You move the lamp back into the hole, so the lamp rests on the sides of the hole. Now the lamp is in place, you notice light coming from a narrow crack between the lamp and the floor. You can see most of the elevator through the crack and hear if something is being said too. The elevator moves upwards. The walls are whizzing by as the elevator moves. > sit You sit down. The elevator reaches the 4th floor. The elevator stops and the doors open. You hear shouting from the stairwell. > z Time passes... > z Time passes... > z Time passes... The elevator closes again and starts moving up. > z Time passes... The elevator reaches the 5th floor. An old lady enters the elevator. She takes a look at the buttons and mutters to herself: "Oh, someone pushed the button for the eighth floor. That's where I am going too." > z Time passes... > z Time passes... > z Time passes... The elevator closes again and starts moving up. > z Time passes... The elevator reaches the 7th floor. The elevator stops and the doors open. You hear shouting from the stairwell. > z Time passes... > z Time passes... A guard enters the elevator. He begins to question the old lady who politely answers. "I entered at the sixth floor and I haven't seen anyone else in the elevator today." she says. "Hmm," the guard mutters to himself, "the traitor must have left the elevator before you entered..." > z Time passes... The elevator closes again and starts moving up. > z Time passes... The elevator reaches the 8th floor. The elevator stops and the doors open. You hear shouting from the stairwell. "Thank you for your cooperation!" the guard says to the old lady. Then he exits the elevator. Outside the elevator he teams up with some guards and tells them: "The old lady here hasn't seen him so he must be downstairs somewhere. Otherwise, we would have caught him on the stairs." One of the other guards says: "Well, he could have been on the roof but we have just checked that too, so he must either be downstairs or in some of the apartments. So let's check the apartments on all floors. Get to work!" Some guards disappear down the hallway to check out the apartments, while others take the stairs. This might be your chance to reach the roof! The old lady leaves the elevator and disappears down the hallway. "Most buttons have just been pressed! In the elevator You are in a cramped elevator lit from a lamp in the ceiling. But in 1942, this is state of the art. There is a panel with buttons left of you. When the elevator stops, you can leave by going south. > s First, you take a look outside the elevator. The guards are busy checking the apartments on the floors, so you quickly pass the stairwell to the last short flight of stairs leading up to the roof. Slowly (because of your knee injury), you climb the stairs to the roof. You reach the top of the stairs and you open the door to the roof slowly as you know there is a guard up here with binoculars, looking for threats in the distance. You walk through the door onto the roof and close it silently. You remember that a Resistance member has hidden a parachute on top of the shed and that you should look out for footholds. On the roof You are standing on the roof by the shed which holds the stairs to the eighth floor. Hopefully, the Resistance managed to place a parachute on top of the shed as planned. The door on the west side of the shed that you came through, is currently closed. The entire roof is surrounded by a low wall which is no more than 80 cm tall. As you knew, there is a guard up here with a set of binoculars, watching for threats against Hitler and his men. At the moment he is on the east side of the roof, looking east through his binoculars. Thus you are hiding on the west side of the small shed. A firm wind is blowing from the west. > save Game "elevator" saved > open shed The shed cannot be opened or closed. > enter shed You cannot enter the shed. The guard with the binoculars moves to the north side of the roof. You carefully move around the corner of the shed, so now you are south of the shed. The guard still hasn't seen you. > in You see no reason to enter the shed and go down the stairs again. It is up here you will have to finish your mission, i.e. escape with the intel you gained. > u At the moment there is no way up. The guard with the binoculars moves to the west side of the roof. You carefully move around the corner of the shed, so now you are east of the shed. The guard still hasn't seen you. > x shed The shed contains some stairs leading into the building below. You grab it and climb down quickly. > take parachute You are already carrying the parachute. The guard with the binoculars moves to the east side of the roof. You carefully move around the corner of the shed, so now you are west of the shed by the door. The guard still hasn't seen you. > x it (the parachute) This is a pretty expensive parachute that the Resistance managed to hide up here for you. It has a ripcord for expanding the canopy when you are sufficiently far away from the building. You are well versed in parachuting, so you know exactly when to pull the ripcord. The parachute also has a mechanism for disconnecting the canopy but that should only be used in case of emergency. The parachute can be worn as a backpack. > wear it (the parachute) Ok, you put on the parachute. You remember the escape plan: You must parachute down from this building and land in the park lake somewhere north of here. The Resistance is keeping a close eye on the lake and will come to your rescue. The guard with the binoculars moves to the north side of the roof. You carefully move around the corner of the shed, so now you are south of the shed.
