This pack includes 876 Interactive Fiction games from a variety of platforms (OVER 50!). The focus of the main project is on games that were either released in English. We have also chosen to focus on commercially release IF games for this release. As the pack matures, freeware games will be added with a focus on quality. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of very poor quality IF games out there. And while I would love to have them all preserved with the snap of a finger, that is simply not possible. The metadata alone for these games often takes longer to pull together than the actual game files themselves. A verison 2 release is already in the works, with another 1,000 games lined up to be added. The games have already been configured to run in in a multidue of emulators and interpreters. WinFrotz, Magnetic, DOSBox, , , , and , are all currently in use with this package. Everything is pre-setup and requires no configuration on the users part. ------------------------------------------------------- Changes to 1.0 Sec02 ------------------------------------------------------- Well, absolutely everything is new this time around. So this section will be reserved for our next release. ------------------------------------------------------- Front-End Sec03 ------------------------------------------------------- The front end used is LaunchBox from Unbroken Software. The front ends website can be found at: https://www.launchbox-app.com/ LaunchBox goes way beyond a standard frontend by supporting direct steam library imports, a cloud games database for scraping metadata, and support for every emulator I have thrown at it. I highly recommend supporting their project and upgrading to the premium edition. I have taken time to mark some of the best Interactive Fiction games as 'favorites' to help give people new to the genre a place to start. ------------------------------------------------------- Setup Sec04 ------------------------------------------------------- Run "Setup eXoIF.BAT". The setup file will check for required files and warn you if any are missing. The eXoIF collection can be run from any directory, as all launch files are designed to use relative paths to each other. Running the "Setup eXoIF.BAT" file will extract all of the LaunchBox assets and the games front end assets/configs. It will also give you the opportunity to customize your set. This includes the option to remove Adult games from the LaunchBox menu. This removes games with sex or nudity from the LaunchBox XML file. This does not remove violent games. Please make use of the ratings category in LaunchBox if you would like to filter the games further. You will also be prompted as to if you would like your global defaults to be Fullscreen or Windowed and whether or not you would like to default to Aspect Ratio On or Off. The global settings are only relevant for games launched via DOSBox. The individual interpreters are rendering the text at their own resolution. So things like aspect ratio and such are ignored. They also generally do not have the ability to specificy window vs fullscreen from the command line. Once it is complete, simply run LaunchBox.exe to dive right in. ------------------------------------------------------- Emulators Sec05 ------------------------------------------------------- This collection uses multiple emulators and interpretors to play the games. They reside in their respective folders at: \eXo\emulators\ ------------------------------------------------------- Playing the Games Sec06 ------------------------------------------------------- After downloading the collection and running "Setup eXoIF.BAT", simply run the LaunchBox.exe file. You will be presented with a list of all included games. The first time you attempt to run a game it will ask if you want to install it. Subsequent runs will directly launch the game. If you run the install file a second time, it will ask if you would like to un-install the game. Choosing "yes" will erase the installed files from your disk, but keep the original ZIP file. You will be prompted to save your save games upon uninstalling the game. To do this from LaunchBox, you may right click the game and select 'Configure'. ------------------------------------------------------- Missing Games? Sec07 ------------------------------------------------------- Yes, there are still games missing. The focus here is on commercial games, of which a handful of long lost ones are found every year or so. We are not currently focused on freeware games, however we are interested in suggestions of any high quality games we may be missing. This includes freeware games. While there are several ways to do this, the "easiest" method usually depends on what you are working with. If you have no eXo Projects currently installed, the recommended method is to place the files for all of the projects you want in the same folder. You should have a "Content" folder and an "eXo" folder in each pack, and the contents of these folders can be placed in the same location. When you run the setup file, it will detect the other packs and install them. If you have a pre-existing LaunchBox set up, or a pre-existing eXo Project already set up, and you would like to merge a new pack into it, then I recommend the eXoMerge.bat file, found in the root folder. You run this file with two parameters, the FROM folder (project to be copied) and the TO folder (the existing project). It will copy over all necessary files for you.
