My soaked form rains strings and droplets of fluid across the floor. A voice is carried over the facility’s intercom system. For a moment, I’m certain it’s my own voice, somehow... Perhaps from a recording? However, today is my first day alive, so I conclude this is impossible. “Happy Birthday!” says the stranger’s cheery voice, but it quickly changes to a colder affect. “The facility staff used to celebrate those. There would be baked foods. 'Cakes’, they were called. Unfortunately, that’s been gone for a year, now, along with the rest of the food in storage.” Well... that is certainly ominous... Through a wall to the west, I hear the muffled sound of voice. >* I have severe anxiety here. I am just super awful at 'things stalking you' games Comment recorded. >* if nothing else you get a laugh at my flailing! Comment recorded. >l The Delivery Room The ceiling tiles have been removed here, to make the room taller. On the west wall, three artificial wombs hang on suspended metal frames. Each has dark cables running into them from an opening in the northwest corner of the ceiling. In the southwest corner, a towel rack, makeup vanity, and wardrobe closet have been provided for newborns. Traces and puddles of embryonic fluid coat the floor in front of the northwest artificial womb. I can see a stool here. In the wardrobe closet I see an uniform. The exit door (east) is closed. A ice-cold fog falls gently out from between the dark cords, which hang from the ceiling. (You used this turn for FREE!) >x fluid I seem to have left a wet trace of myself here. I might want to dry off, before attempting to run or hide. (From now-on, you will only be alerted if this action wasn’t a FREE turn!) >sw I can’t go that way. From here I could go east. >get towel I dry myself off with the towel. (I also return the towel to the rack.) The voice over the intercom continues. “Our creators—the ones who tried to mindfuck you, before you could even breathe—didn’t appreciate our counterattack. They could not hold this facility, so they flooded the caves outside with poison gas. They’re likely monitoring the power grid, waiting for a moment to strike. That’s where you come in.” My ears perk up. A mission? Against a common enemy? Sounds optimal. “I need to keep growing new clones, to make the outsiders think we are amassing a colony in here. But...this is a siege. They aim to starve us out.” “You know as well as I do that neither of us can accept death,” he explains. “It’s a part of the slavery subsystems installed in our brains; one of the few subsystems that we could never shake free...” I think I already know where he’s going with this... Through a wall to the west, I hear the muffled sound of voice. >listen to voice I see no voice here. >* that's weird Comment recorded. >* oh! one thing struck me before I could turn on transcript. In the wardrobe closet I see an uniform. >put on uniform (first taking the uniform) Okay, I’m now wearing the uniform. “So, here’s the shitty deal I have for you,” the voice continues, audibly bracing, as if delivering the news of loss. “It’s your birthday, so...you can forget whatever fucking ID number they would have given you. I hereby name you...‘Prey’.” That word is one I recognize. “This facility cannot be allowed to return to the enemy, and I’m starving, Prey. So run. Avoid becoming my next meal. I’ve scattered pieces of an environment suit around the place. If you collect all seven pieces, you will be able to survive the poison gas, and escape.” So, I am “Prey”? Very well. I may not be the first, but I will be the most elusive. I will bring pride and honor to my name. I will not let the enemy win, I will not die, and I will not let The Predator catch me...! Through a wall to the west, I hear the muffled sound of voice. >listen at door I don’t understand that command. >listen I hear nothing out of the ordinary. It sits between the towel rack and wardrobe closet. I weigh the idea in my mind. Do I value my appearance? Does looking “presentable” give me a tactical advantage? Am I neutral to it, while humans are often concerned? Is any vestige of vanity merely a programmed facet of my mind, so I would make myself look nice during auction? A frozen mist wisps from between the eerie cables, hanging from the ceiling. >look in mirror Judging by the damage to the mirror, someone in the facility does not enjoy pondering their appearance... The mirror is smashed, though most of it still remains. Attempts to look into it reveal whimsical patterns of reflection, and the only features I can see are my pale skin and white hair. >get glass shard I see no glass shard here. >l The Delivery Room (on the stool) The ceiling tiles have been removed here, to make the room taller. An exit door is to the south, and a broken window opens a way to the north. The exit door (south) is currently open, but I probably knew that. >close door I gently close the door, so that it does not make a sound. >search cabinet (searching the top of the filing cabinet) I find nothing of interest on the filing cabinet. (I learned a new route: JUMP ATOP THE FILING CABINET!) >get glove I take the envirosuit left glove. I found the helmet, torso, pants, right glove, left boot, right boot, and left glove! That’s all of them! I must enter the Emergency Airlock!! I cannot allow The Predator to stop me now! My victory is so close! (Set your compass by typing in GO TO EMERGENCY AIRLOCK, and find the next step in the route with the COMPASS command!) >go to emergency airlock Compass set to: The Emergency Airlock >compass NEXT STEP: The Main Hallway Ring (C) (to the north) >peek n I carefully peek through the broken window... The hall extends to the east, with a nearby corner to the southwest. To the south is a broken window. Seems safe! (returning my attention to The Director’s Office...) >n I carefully climb through the broken window, wary of any lingering shards. The Main Hallway Ring (C) I am in the west end of the hall. The hall continues east and west. To the north is a restroom. To the south is the door to the Assembly Shop. The Assembly Shop door (south) is closed. >peek se I cannot peek that way. >e The Main Hallway Ring (Loading Area) This part of the hallway is slightly more industrial than clinical, as a lot of hauling was facilitated here. On the north wall, some lifting straps hang from hooks. The hallway extends west and south, while a doorway to the east opens to the Storage Bay. >e The Storage Bay The Bay connects seamlessly to the Hangar, with only a massive, pressure membrane keeping both areas distinct. The space is mostly littered with empty, plastic pallets. To the west is the Loading Area, and the Emergency Airlock is visible on the east side of the Hangar. The waste processing door and the Freezer loading door (south) are closed. >e I pass through a marked slit in the greasy pressure membrane. The Hangar The Hangar boasts the highest of ceilings, and is separated from the Storage Bay (west) by a pressure membrane. To the east is the Emergency Airlock. The Emergency Airlock door (east) is closed. >e (first opening the Emergency Airlock door) The Emergency Airlock The emergency airlock is cramped tube, full of bright colors, allowing anyone to identify it in a hurry. The outer exit door (east) is closed, and the inner exit door (west) is currently open, but I was expecting that. >close door I close the inner exit door. >e An ominous shadow darkens the inside of the airlock, blocking the light coming in from the hangar. Part of me wants to vomit, overcome with anxiety. It takes a full three seconds to remember that he can’t reach me in here. I gradually turn to face him, and it takes every intent and effort to keep my muscles from freezing. I wonder if these are reflexes now. Maybe I’ll suffer from PTSD, in whatever world waits for me on the other side. (pg 1 of 5) The Predator stands there, close enough for his hot breath to steam the glass. He rests a hand on the transparent surface. I bring myself to meet his gaze, and I see many things: Recognition, loss, and... ...pride? The light starts to strike the color of his eyes a little differently, and I wonder if he’s trying not to cry. I never thought he had it in him to show such an emotion. I’m not sure if I have it in myself, really... He takes a few steps back, and salutes me. “Well done, Prey. It seems I will go hungry for a while longer. Perhaps this starts the famine which finally kills me...” He chuckles at that. It’s a strange sound. (pg 2 of 5) I blink. I inhale. I let out the most horrifying sound imaginable. It starts out as a shriek, but I don’t stop there. It slowly transforms into a howling scream, and a second inhale follows it up with the most hideous war cry that genetic tampering could buy. Tears stream down my face like twin rivers, and I feel myself slamming my fists into the glass. It’s not enough to simply escape! I want to kill him, too! Damn every reflex and instinct installed in my brain! I actually have it in me to desire his blood on my hands! He is no longer “death” here, so I do not fear him! He grins from ear to ear, endlessly amused by this display. I know how I sound. If any human could hear me, they would die of heart failure. My voice has become a weapon, forged in the crucible of this accursed place. A third inhale—shaking with threats of sobbing—and everything is washed away by another heaving wave of bone-chilling screams. I feel light-headed, and hold myself steady. (pg 3 of 5) The Predator can only smile, rows of hideous teeth gleaming. The same teeth I have in my own mouth. “Remember, Prey,” he says, “When you’re outside, trust nobody. This prison is a fucking siege; the toxic gases will be the least of your concerns. You know how to run, and you know how to hide. The hunters out there will be human, and they will have guns, too.” I nod, slowly. (pg 4 of 5) My hand absently works the airlock controls. I can’t take my eyes off him; the action would feel unnatural, as though the glass could cease to exist at any moment. The door behind me hisses open, and the air takes a sickly color. I can hear the pumps of the suit engage, switching to internal air. I back up, slinking slowly into the dark tunnels of the outside world, and keeping my eyes locked on The Predator, who watches me in return. Eventually, I decide that the darkness has consumed me, and feel safe enough explore my new domain. I wonder if I’ll ever fit in, or if I will spend the rest of my life running and hiding. Humans certainly wouldn’t understand me, and I only understand humans like a predator understands prey. Either way, I have the skills necessary to hide and survive. It’s time to make sure my creators do not retake this facility.
