Bradford Mansion an adventure game for IFCOMP 2019 by Lenard Gunda Version: 1.0.3 (ifcomp2019) Introduction It is a rainy evening as you arrive at the mansion of the late Lord Bradford. It took several bus changes to get here, and a long walk from the nearest stop through a muddy forest road. Lord Bradford truly lives - or rather lived - in the middle of nowhere. You are a young associate at the Twilight Brothers law firm. The assignment was simple, visit the house of Lord Bradford and look for a last will and testament. The two sons of the deceased very much would like to get their hands on the mansion, but a distant cousin says he is the one to get the mansion. All three gave the assignment to the Twilights Brothers law firm to dig up the will of the late Lord. And so here you are, looking for a will that supposedly exists. You open the heavy metal gates and let yourself in. There are lights on in the house, but this is no surprise: at least the butler and the maid remain in service to take care of the property until the new owner can be designated. --more-- If you need help with the game, just type help below! In front of mansion You are standing in front of the Bradford Mansion, the home of the late Lord Bradford. The large metal gates lead north while to the south stands the main entrance to the mansion. A thick rope - probably the doorbell - hangs by the door. >åu pull rope DING DONG! [score +1] >x gates An almost 3 meter high gate made of metal. It looks old. Having all sorts of gothic patterns to the bars that make up the gate means this was probably created during the late 19th century. The mansion door opens and an elderly man looks at you from inside. Judging by the way he is dressed, he should probably be the butler. The butler says: Please do come in. He then steps back away from the door. >in Foyer The foyer for the Bradford Mansion is done in a simple style. The walls are covered with wood panels. A large staircase leads up. The main entrance is to the north, while there are doors to the east, southeast, south and west. The butler is here. You might want to talk to the butler, maybe he has something interesting to say? >x butler The butler of Bradford Mansion instantly recognizable from the white shirt and black dress he is wearing. He is oldish and baldish with gray hair. His nose has a reddish tint to it - and do you smell alcohol on the breath? You are not sure. The butler yawns in boredom. >talk to butler The butler says: Good day sir, and welcome to Bradford Mansion. My name is Lucius Gainsborough, I am the butler of Bradford Mansion. How may I be of service? 1. I am here about the will of Lord Bradford. You say: I am here about the will of Lord Bradford. The butler says: To the best of my knowledge, Lord Bradford did not have any sort of will. We have discussed this with him many times, and he felt there was no need for a will. We have already sold a lot of the things of Lord Bradford, including contents of his study, and there was no will found anywhere. The butler says: But if you insist, I may allow you to look around a little bit. 1. Why sell of the things of Lord Bradford? Isn't that illegal? 2. So you wouldn't know where the will is? 3. I need to go You say: Why sell of the things of Lord Bradford? Isn't that illegal? The butler says: Well, Lord Bradford has no need for his stuff anylonger, does he? 1. So you wouldn't know where the will is? 2. I need to go You say: So you wouldn't know where the will is? The butler says: As I have already told you I know of no will in existance for Lord Bradford. 1. So you wouldn't know where the will is? 2. I need to go You say: So you wouldn't know where the will is? The butler says: As I have already told you I know of no will in existance for Lord Bradford. 1. The butler narrows his eyes and is observing your every move. >w Dining Hall You are in the dining hall of the mansion. The hall is quite large, and could probably accomodate a large number of guests. The table can sit at least 20 people. However, there is only one chair by the table. Near the wall there is a glass cabinet and the walls are lined with paintings. A door leads to the south and another to the east. In the glass cabinet you see a dull carving knife. >t open cabinet You try to open the glass cabinet, but the hinges are really stuck. No amount of force seems to be enough to open it. Maybe lubricating would help? >i You are not carrying anything. >xm me I didn't really get that. >x myself I didn't really get that. >x table The dining table is made of maple wood, and looks pretty sturdy and heavy. On closer inspection the painting seems to depict the building of this very mansion. The features of the house, including the tower is very recognizable. However, there are some things that make you uneasy about the painting. The people building the house look very much dead in the pictures, yet, they are still building the house. Also, there seems to be some sort of giant creature hidden in the clouds. It is more of an outline than an actual figure in the painting. >x creature I didn't really get that. >take ka large I didn't really get that. >A take large painting The large painting seems to be fixed in place and you can't take it. >mov push large painting The large painting won't budge. >pull large par inting The large painting won't budge. >open large painting The large painting cannot be opened. >x medium I didn't really get that. >A x medium painting The medium paintings depicts this very house, the mansion. It seems to indicate an earlier period in the life of the house, because all the trees around it look like they have just been planted. In the garden you see a family of 4, two adults, a boy and a girl. They are playing with a red ball. On closer observation you also notice that on the roof of the house, behind one of the chimneys there is a black figure standing and observing the family. It is quite tiny on the picture, but you can still make out wings on its back, even though it looks humanoid and standing on two legs. >x small painting This pictures depicts a cellar of some sort. It is dusty and spider webs are hanging from the walls. The whole picture is pretty dark and gray, and frankly you don't understand why anyone would put such a thing in the dining room. >take small painting The small painting seems to be fixed in place and you can't take it. >push small painting The small painting won't budge. >pull small painting The small painting won't budge. >remove p small painting I didn't really get that. >take medium painting The medium painting seems to be fixed in place and you can't take it. >push mea dium painting The medium painting won't budge. >pull medium paingi ting The medium painting won't budge. >look Dining Hall You are in the dining hall of the mansion. There is a desk here, but it is pretty clean, no papers at all. There are shelves with books and also on one of the shelves there is a metallic safe with a combination lock. Stairs lead down to a door. >open drawer The desk drawer is locked. >d West corridor >e Second floor landing >e East corridor >n East bedroom >look East bedroom This bedroom got its name from being on the east side of the house. A bed, a large closet, a small bedside table is all that is here. The walls are painted red, and there are a few paintings hanging on the walls. The only visible exit is to the south, out to the corridor. >s East corridor >s Gallery >look Gallery There are so many rooms with paintings in this house, one has to wonder why they need a separate room for even more paintings. There are no windows here and the walls are painted sickly yellow. Several paintings are hanging from the wall, all depicting a strange room. The only exit is to the north, out to the corridor. >n East corridor >w Second floor landing >d Foyer The sleeping butler and the maid are here. The sleeping butler is snoaring loudly. >w Dining Hall In the glass cabinet you see a dull carving knife. >look Dining Hall You are in the dining hall of the mansion. The hall is quite large, and could probably accomodate a large number of guests. The table can sit at least 20 people. However, there is only one chair by the table. Near the wall there is a glass cabinet and the walls are lined with paintings. A door leads to the south and another to the east. In the glass cabinet you see a dull carving knife. >s Kitchen >ll ook Kitchen The Bradford Mansion kitchen. It looks like a pretty standard kitchen, although it is quite large by kitchen standards. Cupboard, sink, drawer, has everything. There are an awful lot of exits here as well, to the north, east, south and southwest. There is also a trapdoor on the floor. >e The Pantry On the shelves you see a cardboard box. >look The Pantry The pantry is quite small, with all calls measuring just over a meter in length. Only a single one contains some potatoes. The only exit is to the north. >n Cellar >n Larder >look Larder This is the larder, and it is very chilly here. A door leads south out into the garden. Here on the wooden deck there is nothing, although marks would suggest some furniture did stand here at one point. Other possible exits lead west, north and northeast. >ne The Great Hall The maid is here. The maid cleans some dust. >look The Great Hall You are standing in the Great Hall of the mansion. This is where all the festivities took place - balls and receptions, most likely. The interior is decorated with gold coated patterns, with lots of mirrors and a large chandelier. The maid is here. The maid sweeps the floor. The maid leaves the room and goes east. >w The Toilet >look The Toilet This is the toilet. Not much to describe here really. You see the white porcelain toilet, with a fancy marble textured seat on it. A matching white porcelain sink sits on the wall opposite the door. There is no mirror - but you do notice a rectangular area on the wall atop the sink that is slightly different colour. Maybe a mirror used to be there? The only exit it to the east. >e The Great Hall The maid enters the room from the east. >n The Sitting Room You see a box here. >look The Sitting Room You are in the sitting room of the mansion.
