Start of a transcript of Jon Doe - Wildcard Nucleus Some retro spy fiction by Olaf Nowacki Release 1 / Serial number 190928 / Inform 7 build 6M62 (I6/v6.33 lib 6/12N) (Type "about" for credits and game information.) Identification number: //72B57413-D1A5-4C1A-A7D7-93CDBDEC7E33// Interpreter version 2.1.6 / VM 3.1.2 / Library serial number 080126 Standard Rules version 3/120430 by Graham Nelson Secret Doors version 1/150417 by Gavin Lambert (updated from Andrew Owen's original work) Exit Lister version 11/150410 by Eric Eve >about Jon Doe - Wildcard Nucleus Be Jon Doe, secret agent at MI5, and solve the mystery about the death of scientist Monsieur Edulard and his latest world-changing invention. A story with thrilling women, sinister villains and cutting-edge tech gimmicks. Be a hero, save the world, get the girl! Presumably, this game would be rated 12A in the UK, and "polite" on Andrew Plotkins cruelty scale. Apart from two brief situations, it should not be possible to put the game into a no longer winable state (and none of the test players have died in the aquarium). All other deadly moves can be avoided with enough attention or undone by a simple "undo". Credits I would like to thank Saskia Eckhardt, Patrick Amelung, Oskar Köhn, Annette Köhn and Philipp Ritschel very much for testing and indispensable feedback. I would also like to thank the mysterious Guy Incognito for his very valuable answers on stackoverflow.com. Cover art is by Annette Köhn. The game is using Secret Doors by Gavin Lambert, Exit Lister by Eric Eve and Punctuation Removal by Emily Short and was written in late summer 2019 by Olaf Nowacki, using Inform 7. Feedback and transcripts of your games are very appreciated and can be sent to to my eMail (ioa@gmx.net). >l Office A small bright office containing, mostly, Miss Bestbeforedates desk and a hatstand. To the north is Z's bureau. Miss Bestbeforedate sits on her desk, legs crossed and smiling. >i You are carrying: a hat (being worn) a dressy grey suit (being worn) a Beretta 418 >x me As sharp-looking as always: Jon Doe, secret agent in the service of her majesty, one of the best at MI5. Or probable: the best. >search suit You find nothing of interest. >put hat on hatstand (first taking it off) You throw your hat on the hat stand, adept and elegant as always. >talk to miss "So, what are you doing --" "I'm afraid you'd better hurry," Miss Bestbeforedate interrupts you, pointing to Z's bureau. >x miss Miss Bestbeforedate is eagerly looking back at you, with a promising grin as allways. >x desk A very clean desk, no stains. >n Miss Bestbeforedate dismisses you, "Good luck, Jon!" Z's Bureau Lots of wood paneling, thick carpet, thats Z's Bureau. Heavy curtains hang in front of the windows. Z is sitting behind his desk. A chair stands in front of it. Z is hardly looking up as he says, "Please have a seat, Doe. I need to show you some slides." >sit in chair You get onto the seat. Z presses a button on his table which brings alive a slide projector, casting light onto the wall behind him, "Now, would you please look at this." The slide shows the image of a man, about 60 years old. He wears small round glasses and at the height of his ears a dense hair ring is growing, but he is bald on top. "This is Monsieur Edulard, a belgian computer scientist at Wildcard Inc. You know what Wildcard's business is?" he asks frowning. (You could SAY YES or NO or ASK Z ABOUT WILDCARD) >ask about wildcard You can't see any such thing. >ask z about wildcard "Not really, what should I know about this Wildcard company?" you ask. "Let me bring you up to date then," he says. "Wildcard Inc is the maker of the popular Uriot 6200 entertainment console. In addition, they contrive technology for the production of nuclear energy." "Monsieur Edulard was found dead in his house, obviously commited suicide." Z looks piously while pushing the button for the next slide, a picture of a corpse hanging from the ceiling. "The thing is that he was also working for us as an informant, because we like to know what is being developed at Wildcard." (You could ASK Z ABOUT THE SUICIDE) >ask z about suicide "So you guess Monsieur Edulard didn't commit suicide?" you say. Z nods, "We need to know who killed Edulard and why." He pushes his button again and the new slide shows a man with a scarred face, a monocle, pomadised hair and a bow tie with a dot pattern. "This is Adolf von Bolzplatz, the owner of Wildcard Inc. I want you to talk to him. See what you can find out, but I do not want him to become suspicious, you understand me?" (You could SAY YES or NO) >yes "I understand," you say. "Is there anything else I should know?" "There is also Edulard's daughter Valerie." Another slide shows a woman in her thirties. "She happens to be the fiancée of Adolf von Bolzplatz. It may be that she also knows something." "I think I will talk to her first," you say smirking. "No, you will not, just talk to her if there's a appropriate opportunity." Z presses another button. The floor starts to vibrate and the wall behind him moves slowly upwards. Oh, wait! It's not the wall that moves up, it is the room that goes down! He is looking sternly at you, "Now go and see Robert. He has prepared something and will equip you." The wall behind Z moves past and you can feel the whole room go down. >l Z's Bureau (on the seat) Lots of wood paneling, thick carpet, thats Z's Bureau. Heavy curtains hang in front of the windows. Z is sitting behind his desk. The room is still moving down. >x z Z must be in his late fifties. Well, according to the cut of his suit and the pattern on his tie. With a rough creak the room comes finally to a halt. At the place where there was a wall behind Z is now an open passage to a large hall north from here. >n You get off the seat. As soon as you leave Z's bureau, it starts to move up again. "Good luck, Doe!" Z calls out after you and has to bend down, as he is still sitting in his chair. You're just seeing his feet go up, then he's gone and where the passage was, there is another wall now. Mainframe A large, white-tiled hall with a flat ceiling. The vast majority of it is taken by a mainframe, a System 4 super computer. On the east wall is a wide, closed garage door with a red button next to it. Mr. Robert stands behind a lab bench and tinkers with something, probably one of his tricky gadgets. "Good morning, Doe. You are here for your equipment, I suppose?" he says. On the laboratory table is a printout. >x robert Robert is a somehow lanky guy wearing a grey overall over his brown suit. >x printout "The System 4 can now also store and process images," Robert says proudly. The printout looks like this: (/#*, ..*,./##%#%&&&&..,,, (.# ..,,,,,,,#&%,,,, /#&%. .............#%%,, #*/. ...,,,,..,..,...#%%* , ...,,*/*,,,,......,*%%& *....,,*,.,,,*,,,,,,,,.,%%& #/......,,**,.,*,,..,,,,#&& &%%*...,(#(##((((*#%%%%%(/% .%(%,,%##&&&&&&*/%&%#%#*%.. &&%(*./,%&(&&&&(,*(#/,,,. . ,&(,,,.* (#%,.&&&*.,,,,,,,... ,./***(#/%(*%*,,,*/,,**... . ./(//(*,(%&&(#(#/,(,*,**... . /((/%##/*/(%((,,,,**,... .. ,(#((#&&&&&&%###*(//, .. .. ,/#%((&&&&%###((***/ %%,. .. .*/%###(/*/(##/*,***..&&&& .....*(&((%&%%#####(/( .&&&&& &&&&&&%%(/##&&&&&&% .&&&&&& &&&&&&%%%%%##&&&&&&&&&&&&&& >x table There is nothing special to say about the laboratory table. This is supposed to be the second largest computer system in the world. >talk to robert "What do you got for me?" you ask. He reaches into his pocket and takes out a bundle of papers. "Here are some application documents for you: a resume, CV, recommendations. Just in case you want to apply to Wildcard as a computer expert." He puts the papers in front of him on the lab bench. >take papers Taken. >i You are carrying: a bundle of application documents a dressy grey suit (being worn) a Beretta 418 >x papers These are the application documents for a job at Wildcard Inc. that Robert has put together for you. All the information contained in it is a lie, of course, especially the master of computer science. >read papers These are the application documents for a job at Wildcard Inc. that Robert has put together for you. "It cuts almost everything, I'm quite proud of it," he says. >ask robert for wristwatch Mister Robert has better things to do. >l Mainframe A large, white-tiled hall with a flat ceiling. The vast majority of it is taken by a mainframe, a System 4 super computer. On the east wall is a wide, closed garage door with a red button next to it. Mr. Robert stands behind a lab bench and tinkers with something, probably one of his tricky gadgets. >ask robert about system You know, our System 4 is the biggest computer in the world, not even the americans have that kind of thing. With his help, we coordinate all our military missions. Besides, all our intelligence information is stored in it," he says, not without pride. >ask robert about z There is no reply. >ask robert about edulard "A big loss. He was the leading scientist for artificial intelligence," he says absently. >ask robert about robert "I don't know much about Mister Robert," Mister Robert says. >ask robert about adolf "We have captured Adolf von Bolzplatz after World War II and Wildcard has become a company of national importance. Unfortunately, he lacks a bit of British manners I'd say," he replies. >ask robert about valerie There is no reply. >push button You raise your hand to press the button, but Mr. Robert shouts, "Please do not touch anything!" and looks annoyed in your direction. >open door It seems to be locked. >ask robert about button "Wait, I'll do that before you break anything," he says and pushes the red button. The garage door folds upwards, revealing the way to the car park in the east. >e Car Park This is a small car park exclusively for MI5 special agents. West of here is the entrance to the mainframe. You can see the Jaguar here. >open jaguar It is a convertible, just get in and out as you like it. >in You can't go that way. >enter jaguar As you get into the Jaguar, Robert leans down to the side window. "Here is another thing," he says and hands you a wristwatch. You turn it back and forth in your hand and while you put it on, you look questioningly at Robert. "A custom-made," he says, "it has an angle grinder installed. If you turn this car into a scrap heap again, you can cut yourself out of the wreck with it." Then he goes back to the mainframe. Alright, now get to work! Wildcard Inc is located a few miles east of here. >e You drive through the city and arrive after a few minutes without significant accidents at your destination in the Front of Wildcard Inc (in the Jaguar) A large parking lot, but only a few cars on it. To the north is the huge entrance hall of Wildcard Inc. The MI5 is located a couple of miles west from here. >out You get out of the Jaguar. Front of Wildcard Inc A large parking lot, but only a few cars on it. To the north is the huge entrance hall of Wildcard Inc. You can see the Jaguar here. >x cars A couple of expensive, heavy, pitch-black sedans. >search cars You find nothing of interest. >look under cars You find nothing of interest. >n Big Hall A really huge hall, executed in the most modern architecture, which apparently allowed only three building materials: concrete, glass and wood. It looks and feels like the future and at the same time exudes a timeless warm grandeur. In it's center is a glass elevator, which is surrounded by a cylindrical aquarium, that extends from the floor up to the hall ceiling. The exit is to the south. You can see a security guard here. >save Ok. >x elevator A nice piece of modern technology. In the glass elevator is a shiny silver button. >x aquarium The aquarium extends from the floor of the hall to the very top and has a diameter of a good 16 feet. Many different fish swim partly quietly, sometimes hectically back and forth. >x fish For a moment you look at the fish in the aquarium and ask yourself if they are poisonous. Finally, you wake up from your little daydream, knowing that you have more important things to do. >talk to guard "Do you have an appointment, Sir?" he asks you. >show papers to guard The guard flips through the papers. He finally decides that they are in order and hands them back to you. "Please take the elevator to the upper floor, Sir," he says. >enter elevator You enter the glass elevator. Inside the elevator many different exotic fish swim right next to you in small swarms. The big hall beyond looks strangely distorted from here, as if you were wearing someone else's glasses. On the wall is a shiny silver button. The elevator is currently on the floor in the hall. >push button You press the silver button and the elevator rushes upwards. After a few seconds he stops at the top. >in You would have to get out of the glass elevator first. >out You get out of the glass elevator. Upper Gallery The gallery covers about half of the upper part of the big hall. A glass elevator connects it to the lower level. In the center of the otherwise blank eastern wall is a big double door. You can see the water surface of the aquarium and a modern plastic here. >x plastic The plastic is made of steel, about a meter high and stands on a concrete base. You can not see exactly what it is supposed to represent, but it's very organic. >x water The water surface of the aquarium is only one inch lower than the floor of the gallery. Small waves slosh back and forth on it. >touch water You feel nothing unexpected. >save Ok. >in (first opening the big double door) The door has a smooth dark surface and no latch or handle that allows you to open it. >enter water This is neither the time nor the location to take a bath. >x door The door has a smooth dark surface and no latch or handle that allows you to open it. >push it It is fixed in place. >w This is neither the time nor the location to take a bath. >knock on door You knock on the door. A short time later, steps are heard on the other side and finally the door is opened. A bald young woman asks you in, "Good day mister Doe, please come in." >in Von Bolzplatz' Office This office suits a megalomaniac, it must be the longest you have ever seen. From the entrance (in the west) it's about 200 feet to the big dark desk on the other side. The design style is also continued here, spartan elegance. No paintings decorate the bare concrete walls and the wide windows are so high up that you could not reach them by hand. The bald-headed woman closes the door behind you and then accompanies you on the way to Bolzplatz. Her steps echo sharply in the otherwise tense, silent room. Bolzplatz sits back behind his desk and looks at you, a smile on his lips, a seemingly unobtrusive smile. "What can I do for you, Mr. Doe?" You can see Adolf von Bolzplatz and the bald woman here. >x woman With her bald head, the smooth expressionless face and the well-toned body, the bald woman looks like a living mannequin, you think. She returns your gaze coldly. >talk to woman "Hey, are you more often here?" you ask her. She does not bother to answer. >x adolf His face is full of scars that indicate a past in a duelling student corporation. The waxed side parting, the monocle and the razor-sharp mustache round off the impression that he is a character from George Grozs painting "The Pillars of Society". Authoritarian and unfortunately also charismatic in his case. >talk to adolf You hand him your application documents, "I am very keen to do new, exciting tasks, Mr. Bolzplatz and Wildcard Inc may well be the place to do it." "Of course, we are always looking for talented and dynamic employees. Provided they are adequately qualified in their area of expertise," he replies. He reads your documents in detail. "That looks very good, Mr. Doe, well done," he says after he has finished. "Great. Frankly, I have a considerable desire to get some momentum into this place, to let off steam to my heart's content, of course, professionally." "I see. We need some time to check your application. Do not call us, we will come back to you." >save Ok. >ask adolf about valerie There is no reply. >ask adolf about edulard "Edulard, one of my best employees. A tragedy and a bitter loss to science. Did you know him?" "Only remotely, by my work. What reason could he have had to kill himself?" "Unlike the electronic brains we manufacture, we can not look into the human soul, Mr. Doe." "Are you telling me that your computer can do that, Mr. Bolzplatz?" He smiles at you, as you would smile at a little kid that said something stupid. "Certainly not. Our scientific staff are mostly nerds, people with exceptional cognitive abilities. Unfortunately, these people also tend to melancholy and little things can upset them. Possibly an early childhood trauma that suddenly breaks out again, who can judge that?" "Well, admittedly you sure know more about it than I do." "All right, Mr. Doe, my time is very valuable and I assume that something similar applies to you." Suddenly Bolzplatz looks past you. You turn around and see that Valerie, Edulard's daughter, has entered the room and walks to you with calm steps. "Well, I think we've discussed everything, Mr. Doe. Miss Mimikri will escort you outside." Miss Mimikri leads you to the door. You can see how Valerie and von Bolzplatz greet each other with a heartfelt kiss. >x valerie Valerie wears mourning: a black dress, over it a black coat. She does not look fashionable, especially not with her short black hair, thin mouth and broad nose, yet she exudes an incredible amount of personality. "What are you doing here?" you hear von Bolzplatz saying. "I'm on my way to father's house and I just wanted to see you for a second. Are you busy?" she answers him. He smiles greasily, "Not at all. Let's make it an hour. Or two." Somehow Miss Mimikri opened the door, but unfortunately you did not notice how. She gently pushes you through the door, "Have a good day, Mr. Doe." Upper Gallery The gallery covers about half of the upper part of the big hall. A glass elevator connects it to the lower level. In the center of the otherwise blank eastern wall is a big double door. You can see the water surface of the aquarium and a modern plastic here. You swallow your pride. Now is the best time to take a look at Edulard's legacy. >save Ok. >w This is neither the time nor the location to take a bath. >d You enter the glass elevator. Inside the elevator many different exotic fish swim right next to you in small swarms. The big hall beyond looks strangely distorted from here, as if you were wearing someone else's glasses. On the wall is a shiny silver button. The elevator is currently up in the hall. >w This is neither the time nor the location to take a bath. >d You press the silver button and the elevator rushes downwards. After a few seconds it comes to a halt on the floor of the big hall. >in The glass wall prevents you from going into the aquarium. Luckily. >s You would have to get out of the glass elevator first. You should set out for Edulard's House as long as Valerie is busy. >out You get out of the glass elevator. Big Hall A really huge hall. In it's center is a glass elevator, which is surrounded by a cylindrical aquarium, that extends from the floor up to the hall ceiling. The exit is to the south. You can see a security guard here. >s Front of Wildcard Inc A large parking lot, but only a few cars on it. To the north is the huge entrance hall of Wildcard Inc. You can see the Jaguar here. >enter jaguar Front of Wildcard Inc (in the Jaguar) A large parking lot, but only a few cars on it. To the north is the huge entrance hall of Wildcard Inc. The MI5 is located a couple of miles west from here. Edulard's home is a bit further to the east, but with the Jaguar you'll be there in about an hour. >e You drive east through the city. The buildings gradually become shallower and rarer. Edulard's house is located on the outskirts of London. Front of Edulard's House (in the Jaguar) You are standing in front of a small rundown bungalow. The color peels from the crumbling, once pale blue walls and also from the pink front door in the north. A trail leads through overgrown bushes to the east around the house. Wildcard Inc is about an hour drive to the east. You can see a small mailbox (closed) here. >out You step out of the car and it feels like something is scurrying away behind you. >open mailbox You open the small mailbox, revealing a leaflet. >take leaflet Taken. >read it It's a brochure of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and contains a couple of pictures showing their DEC PDP-10 mainframe computer. >close mailbox You close the small mailbox. >x house A flat bungalow, not very big. Strange: Edulard will have earned a decent amount of money, so why did he live in such a rundown thing? >x door A tightly locked pink front door. A doormat lies on the ground in front of it. >x mat A worn dark brown doormat. >lift it Hm, no key under the doormat. >take it No thanks, that's too dirty. >search it You find nothing of interest. >open door It does not move. A tightly locked pink front door. A doormat lies on the ground in front of it. >e You follow the path around the house. It leads onto the Terrace The terrace is made up of several, mostly broken concrete slabs in the middle of an overgrown garden. However, there is a really nice view of the Thames from here. A path leads around the house to the east and to the south a door into it. You have the odd feeling that someone is watching you. >x garden Nature has taken back control over this garden a long time ago. >search garden You find nothing of interest. >x thames Ah, well, "liquid history", as they say. Smelling a bit funny, however. >s (first opening the kitchen door) Kitchen This seems to be the kitchen, but there is little more than a sink, a drawer and a fridge. There is a passage to the south and a door leads north onto the terrace. You can see a black cat and a small food bowl (empty) here. The cat sits down and meows loudly. >x cat This is a beautiful black cat. It has a slim black collar around its neck. The cat runs out of the room. >x sink The kitchen sink is empty. >x drawer You see nothing special about the drawer. >open it You open the drawer, revealing a tin opener. >take opener Taken. >close drawer You close the drawer. The cat walks quietly into the room. >open fridge You open the fridge, revealing a food can. The cat sits down and meows loudly. >take can Taken. The cat runs out of the room. >open can with opener Scrunch scrunch scrunch... Finally the can is open. >x can A barely dented can with a yellow label on which is a big red crab. The content is crab meat. In the food can is crab meat. >put meat in bowl You shake the meat into the food bowl... Shlomp. As soon as you start to pour the meat into the bowl the cat comes running into the kitchen. The cat starts to gulp down the food hungrily. >pet cat The cat turns around and hisses at you, returning to its food right afterward. The cat is crouching over the bowl, eating. >l The cat has emptied the whole bowl and now looks at you, softly meowing. >pet cat The cat purrs. The cat runs out of the room. >l Kitchen This seems to be the kitchen, but there is little more than a sink, a drawer and a fridge. There is a passage to the south and a door leads north onto the terrace. You can see a small food bowl (empty) here. >close fridge You close the fridge. >s Entrance A small room with a low ceiling and passages in all directions except to the south, where there is a door. You have to think about the photo with the hanged Edulard. This must be the room, the crime scene. In fact, hard to imagine that he hanged himself here, the ceiling is so low that he almost had to reach the ground with his feet. And the lamp does not look very stable either. You can see a black cat here. The cat runs out of the room. >x ceiling A low and bald ceiling with a naked lamp in the middle. Hard to imagine that someone could hang himself on this lamp... >x lamp The lamp hangs on a thin cable, actually too thin for a body to hang on it. >e Study The study is full of shelves containing scientific books and journals. In the middle is a desk, which is also stocked with books, magazines, notes and a computer. The only passage leads west. The computer is currently turned off. >x shelves The shelves are crammed with books and magazines to the top. >x books You leaf through the books. They are all about computer science. >search books You find nothing of interest. >read books You leaf through the books.
