I first played some sort of adventure game on a library VAX system where my parents worked, and was kicked off it only to find that someone had brought Zork on floppies to play on the public Apple ][. I later got a C128 at home and my parents bought me grey-box editions of a number of Infocom games. I still have fond memories of trying to play Brimstone with my father late at night.
I found a C64 in a free pile at University, and used it to play all my old Infocom disks, finally beating Planetfall several years after we bought it. Then Usenet happened.
For various reasons I avoided crafting IF in any standard tools until recently, so my only claim to fame is having the AWK example on the Cloak of Darkness page. I’m still rather proud of how I managed to use the main AWK loop for tokenisation.
