Would *you* want to be a contestant on IF Iron Chef?

As the Iron Chef for ZIL, I’d like to make my official Iron Chef statement:

Just know that your only issue with choosing ZIL might be learning the language - you should know the ZIL Iron Chef is the least qualified author of the group, and therefore you’ll have the easiest time writing it, and the highest chance of winning!

Just kidding. Well technically the whole thing is true, but the main reason you should choose ZIL for the excitement of learning a new coding language and having fun! (I’m not very good at speeches, as you’re aware…)

Choose ZIL!

Aw, you’d be the beloved underdog no matter what system you chose!

I just wanted to say that this is a wonderful idea. Give it the full Iron Chef treatment! And don’t skimp out on the “Fukui-san”.

Things continue to happen behind the scenes, and I plan to share details of the revised picture once the Iron Chefs’ and judges’ working groups finalize the most important aspects of their roles and cross-ratify their results.

In the meantime, however, I’m pleased to announce that two more Iron Chefs have joined the ranks of assembled masters! Please welcome:

  • Iron Chef Inform 6: Garry Francis (Warrigal)
  • Iron Chef Adventuron: Dee Cooke (dee_cooke)

Also, @HAL9000: I did not recognize the reference to Fukui-san, but FYI a similar role (i.e. someone to answer technical questions about what the chefs are up to based on the materials that they post during the development) is being planned for the benefit of both judges and audience. It is likely that this technical advisor role will be fulfilled by different people for different platforms.

When I first heard it, it sounded like “squeeze on”. Then it became a gag around the office where, anytime we wanted to talk to someone, we had to say “squeeze on” first.

For those following only the main thread, a couple of related threads have been started by people involved in planning the “pilot episode”:

I’d like to join the competition as a Twine author! Lmk if that works or not.

Edit 1: to be clear, I would like to be a challenger, not an Iron Chef. I didn’t fully understand the first poll, my bad!
And you said we have to send a short pitch about why we should be chosen? Does that occur during the Mon-Fri time, or before?

Edit 2: Also, if you’re looking for lesser-known systems, how about Videotome? There are 4 versions, but all work very similarly, and someone could represent all of them as a whole.

We have an Iron Chef for Twine, so you’d be more than welcome as a prospective competitor.

I’m not a choice-based author myself, so I haven’t heard of Videotome, but I think a couple of the other popular systems could be represented, if not for the pilot, then maybe later. Ink and ChoiceScript come to mind, but there are many more, as you would no doubt know.

The search for Iron Chefs for other systems would depend on the demand from prospective competitors. So, if you’d like to use one of those systems, nominate yourself as a competitor using that system and @otistdog can start the search.

I learned Inform7 and created One King to Loot them All for IFComp 2023 (originally Single Choice Jam 2023 but I underestimated the learning curve.)
I learned Twine and created One King to Loot them All for Spring Thing 2024 and Moon Logic for IFComp 2025 (originally BAD IF Jam 2025 but … see above.)
I learned Dendry and created Poetic Justice for SeedComp 2024 and Losing Track for Neo-Twiny Jam 2024 (oh and the Mini-Cluedo 2025 challenge…)
I am now learning ZIL…

Soo I hereby announce myself as ZIL competitor
One is never too old for learning a new language. I’d love to take a swing at ZIL!

Go for it! You’ve got 3 or 4 months to learn the language.

The ZIL community is very active, but they release very few games. Max is one of the few that has released a full-blown game in recent times. Personally, I think he’s being a bit modest.

Yeah!! You will not regret it!

Some updates from behind the scenes:

  • The Iron Chefs’ working group has gotten a solid start on defining a template for challenge ingredients, something that is trickier than it might sound at first. (Unlike the TV show, in which one can be pretty sure that any food item will remain a food item no matter what is done to it in a professional kitchen, here we’re trying to make sure that an interesting idea will be translatable into a working IF scenario.)

  • The judges’ working group is approaching the finish line on finalizing the judging and scoring process. Much work has gone into defining a set of categories for scoring and their definitions, so that the both audience and chefs will know how scoring can be maximized.

  • The challengers’ working group is mostly complete with their draft pitches (just a few left) and is working on brief biographies of their IF careers (about half done). They’re also deliberating on flair icons for the show, for use by fans and “cast” members.

Things are looking good so far. We haven’t hit any problems that have turned out to be insurmountable, thanks to the creativity and cleverness of everyone who has volunteered. The list of volunteers has gotten surprisingly long at this point – over 30 people all told! This is definitely a “stone soup” scenario; I may have had the initial idea, but it’s coming to life thanks to the efforts of the community as a whole.

More updates from behind the scenes: Things are still progressing steadily at a rate that should meet the planned timeline and may even allow an earlier pilot episode than anticipated.

The final expected “cast” members have been confirmed; these are the technical advisors for each development system that will act as the equivalent of “Fukui-san” by providing quick and effective answers to judges’ questions about the platform in use. They will be:

  • Inform 7: Zed
  • Twine: Greyelf
  • Dialog: improvmonster
  • TADS: johnnywz00
  • ZIL: vaporware
  • Inform 6: fredrik
  • Adventuron: ChristopherMerriner

Please thank all of them for their generosity and dedication to spreading knowledge of their chosen systems. Their contribution will go a long way toward making this “show” something of long-term value to the community.

Additionally, the total pool of judges is now 15 strong (including the five already announced), which – assuming that the pilot is a success – will be more than enough to hold a series of “season one” episodes with an interesting and varied mix of judges for each. I’m keeping the identities of additional judges a secret for now to maintain some surprise value later, but each of them has my own sincere thanks, and I’m certain that everyone will be pleased to see the expanded lineup.

The judges’ working group has identified some short games to use for a “test run” of the draft scoring rubric to make sure that it is fit for purpose, and initial results seem promising. Please extend a special round of applause for this working group, which has covered the most ground of the three. (Thank you @AmandaB, @DeusIrae, @EJoyce, @Rovarsson, and especially @severedhand, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty on several occasions.)

The challengers’ working group has established some proposed flair icons with an overwhelming yea vote, and these should be shared soon by @caleb, the group’s official spokesperson. HanonO has graciously agreed to allow two groups for this event, one for chefs (both Iron Chefs and challengers) and one for “tasters” (both judges and audience), for those who want to use the flair.

The Iron Chefs’ working group is occupied with refinement of the template for challenge ingredients. At this point, “code-like” challenge ingredients as originally proposed have been definitively ruled out in favor of “seed-like” (i.e. conceptual) challenge ingredients, in order to ensure maximum flexibility and room for creativity on the part of chefs. At least one sample challenge ingredient seems to be meeting with high approval from some chefs, and, since it cannot now be used for Iron ChIF, will probably be submitted to SeedComp next year. Other samples have been deemed anywhere from acceptable to good. Both Iron Chefs and challengers have made it clear that they are more than happy to deal with “tough” ingredients, so the focus is on identifying the red zones of technical unworkability for each platform.

So the short version is: Everything is going pretty well. I’m expecting to be able to post a FAQ laying out the various decisions that have been made no later than next month, even if it’s only in draft form. Keep your fingers crossed, and stay tuned!

For those who haven’t been paying close attention, there have been some significant changes to the list of challengers over the last several weeks. We’re now at thirteen confirmed challengers in total.

At various points, four people have signed up but subsequently withdrawn due to scheduling conflicts and/or clarification of the rules. Although they have removed themselves from the signup poll, those who aren’t able to participate in the pilot due to time-based conflicts will be more than welcome to sign up as challengers for a (still hypothetical) season one as their schedule permits. (…and in the meantime we certainly hope to see them in the audience!)

Some recent additions to the line-up have either not announced themselves publicly or had their announcement “eaten” by the recent site outage. If you’ve missed the news, please welcome the following confirmed contenders:

In addition to the above, @ilyu has signed up on the poll found in the top post but has not yet confirmed.

Note that there are currently confirmed challengers for every platform except two: Inform 6 and Adventuron. I see that @fredrik recently announced the release of v6.0 of PunyInform, so if anyone has been looking for an excuse to try that capable small-footprint library then this is a great opportunity!

And if anyone is brave enough/foolish enough to take on Iron Chef Inform 6, be prepared to be turned into mince meat.

But what’s this? The challenger is pulling out…grammar version 3???

And as Iron Chef Adventuron I am very keen to see some challengers! Adventuroners - think you’ve got what it takes? Bring it on (or even if you don’t think you’ve got what it takes, bring it on anyway, we’ll have a laugh regardless!)

It’s nice to see a set of modern, popular Interactive Fiction / Text Adventure tools in one place. From this set I only heard of TADS before.

I recall some Infocom games and understand Z-code genesis, also played Colossal Cave.

Of course the modern tools are actively developed.

Although time pressure competition isn’t suitable for me, it is opportunity to get to know about new development systems.

I think that I dig into Inform 6 at last just to extend the tools I can write in. But my next game will be in beloved ADL, as I still training my designing skills, now also based on rich feedback and some literature.

I have some experience with ADL, so it will be better than writing first game in Inform 6.

Cheers.

Update: HanonO has set up the groups for Iron ChIF. (Thanks, @HanonO!)

The group for “tasters” is reserved for judges and audience members, i.e. those who will be primarily playing the “dishes” produced by the Iron Chefs and challengers. The announced judges have already been added, but everyone else who plans to cheer on the contestants is welcome to sign up at the official Tasters group page.

Just click the “Join” button at top right, and you’ll be able to use the distinctive Taster flair to show your support!

Welcome @actually_incorrect, @iaraya, @Piergiorgio_d_errico, @simpsong00, and @Doug_Egan to the official Tasters group!

To make use of the special flair, you have to go to your preferences page. A few down from the control for selecting your avatar, you’ll find one labeled “Flair” where you should be able to select Iron-ChIF-Tasters from a dropdown box. Voila!
