Figured out the UI (and actually commented the CSS!) for my One Choice jam entry. Kind of pivoting on the idea, but it’s because the Fallen London bug has bitten me once more…
Ouch the UI part… I just uploaded a test version of my One Choice Jam entry to itch.io and when I click Run game it runs… but looks horrible. I guess I need to figure out how to get the cover art displayed and make it look presentable. So my positive thing: it does run, but that’s about it …
I’ll test this for the unimplemented parts of my WIP (the most sizeable are the activity in a certain tower, the entirety of the outside and the NPC interaction…)
I suggest that entire transcript-as-storyboard discussion ought to be moved in a separate, proper debate in general design, because IS an excellent idea, OT in this positivity debate.
(aside that the idea IS a positive thing now happening to multiple denizens of this forum…)
Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.
I ended up designing my own VN program. Sigh. It’ll be awhile. I think I figured out Processing. It’s p5.js that’s giving me trouble. Maybe I should stick with Processing? It’s Java, after all.
yesterday I had a lovely date!! we read plays together
Shakespeare, by any chance?
yes actually! some monologues from king lear, othello, and midsummer’s (among other vignettes)
That’s a dreamy date. Second date: reading poetry aloud to you while feeding you strawberries.
Third: Whipped cream. Strawberries recommended. Poetry optional.
Turns out the chocolate chunks in our double chocolate cake set up like geodes, and it’s hell breaking them apart. Delicious, though, and the kid’s having a blast, so I count this as a win.
we read poetry to each other too!! I don’t like strawberries tho haha. but I do like whipped cream. he’s very dreamy
So I was dead set on having a no-spend week. Other than whatever regular bills I’m always racking up, I wanted to have a week where I didn’t spend a dime. I’m eating everything in the pantry (lots of beans and canned tuna) and driving as little as possible.
And all that was working for about 5 days until my stepbrother came to town and wanted to have lunch. I said, “You’ll have to buy me lunch because I’m having a no-spend week,” and he thought that was a creative way to get a free lunch. But then he picked a restaurant around the corner from a great fabric store. And I started to salivate at the prospect of fabric shopping. And I told myself very sternly to leave my credit card at home. And then I didn’t leave it at home. And after lunch, I told myself that I should go straight home and not stop at the fabric store. And then I stopped at the fabric store and bought glorious fabric.
This is bad, obviously, because it means I am too weak-minded to have a no-spend week if I come within sniffing distance of a fabric store. But it’s awesome, because now I have lots of great new fabric.
I got the transcript to Clubfloyd testing my game! It was very fun reading through the transcript and seeing all the confused messages and deaths that they “achieved” in the game. Whew, off to fix those bugs now!
(I have to say: the session reached about 30% through the game, but that’s surprisingly a lot in one runthrough [considering 1) the game’s very hard, well at least according to testers so far and 2) it’s a full 8-10 hour game which means they may have spent like 3 hours on it, I can’t tell]. Only one other tester got further in one runthrough, but that was after multiple attempts!)
Granted, but in all fairness you have two things in their favor. One, I think nearly every single one of the attendees have been playing interactive fiction longer than you’ve been alive; you get really good at puzzles after awhile. And two, and more importantly IMO, there were a group of people pooling their insights and intuition to progress. I would imagine any one of them may have taken longer individually (except maybe David Welbourn).
Dad saved the day with finding my missing ring at the back of the sink cabinet, having taken a tumble through a break in the wood.
Been zipping about zailing on the zee in Fallen London, which is normally an area of gameplay I ignore. Finished up my long term quest, the Poet Laureate grind.
I’ve been redesigning my website, because it’s not… what I really had in mind when I tried to make a retro-looking page. And it wasn’t formatting super well when there is a chunk of text.
So back to the drawing board…
taking heavy inspiration from the 2010s French Gov Organisation websites, but more green
Also a lot more space to fill…
But I am much happier with it now!
One fun thing about writing some reviews is going up the ranking on the IFDB (the gamification system works ). Anyway, with my last review, I’ve passed Emily Short!
Got a little bit of personal, private good news. Got through a difficult keeping life rolling on track task, and I know me in the very near future will thank past (present) me for it. I’ve been sort of faint lately from hemorrhaging, so it’s mostly been taking things easy. Managed to eke out a bit of writing on a personal project though!
Tom has been out of town for over a week, and I trashed the house, because unfortunately I can be a pig without adult supervision. So I am cleaning the whole house today in preparation for his return tonight.
I have a high tolerance for mess, but when I decide to clean, I really, really clean. I am an excellent housecleaner. I scrub everything top to bottom. I do not cut corners. I scrub every inch of the toilet and the oven. I scrub the baseboards. I dust everywhere. I clean behind the faucets with an old toothbrush. Everything will be sparkling, Tom will be happy, and then I will return to my slobbishness until he gives me the hairy eyeball.
After days and hours of feeling stuck, I finally made a breakthrough with the mechanics for the WIP (aka the “cave game”). Anyway, the big hold up was trying to make it friendlier and more sandbox-y, and I think I’ve figured that out. Though we’ll see how I feel in a week; that’s the real test
Anyway, feels good to get back into a flow state with writing and coding after really slugging it out for so long
