Taught my first undergraduate workshop today. I’m going to be working with them for the whole year and they’re an absolutely lovely bunch, so excited to read their work and watch their writing develop over the months to come!
Woah, this is a first:
Trapped in the office, because there’s a demo (“Remembrance of the Hamas attack on Israel”) ongoing outside. The police sent us back.
Could take several hours, they say…
An IF protagonist would look for a sub-basement tunnel, or something…
We’re trying to prep the house for uncle Milton’s arrival. On a positive note: We don’t plan on being here if/when he arrives.
My positive for the day: I read Brett’s post and laughed out loud. Wonder if whoever built that mailbox or provided those instructions is an IF writer from the Infocom days.
Uh, you’re right. One possible solution would have been to climb over a wall at the backyard and then cross another backyard to get to a parallel street. That would have been worthy of an IF fan, but I could have broken all my bones.
My method, on the other hand, was rather poor game design:

boring, but efficient.
House had got into a bit of a state the last few weeks while I’ve been busy so have started giving it a really good clean and tidy. I already feel better.
Audition schedule is coming out soon for this year’s production! It’s a good one this year. Last year was a very good play too, but this one’s also a musical play.
What musical/play? (From someone who understands the difference between “musical” and “play with music”. )
We got accidentally shipped a double-batch of laying-hen chicks: two boxes of 50 instead of just one. But they didn’t charge us for them, and our friends with a local dairy farm said sure, they’d take 50 free chicks if we could give them a couple days to get their brooder set up (which is fine, we have plenty of space in ours).
Whew. That’s a relief; I was worried it was going to be a major hassle finding homes for them. And we definitely can’t sell an extra 50 x 80% x 7 days / 12 eggs/dozen … 11 or 12 dozen eggs a week, especially not since COVID began and lots of people have backyard chickens and are sharing eggs with friends and neighbors well below cost…
Well, we’re doing School of Rock. With all the music from the play. So that’s gonna be cool!
(I guess the difference being one’s integrated into the play and one just has songs slapped on?)
Have got into the habit over the last few weeks of designating Wednesday as a Proper Day Off (no day job work, housework, other chores or anything). It requires a lot of planning and extra work on other days but it’s been so worth it.
We are back in Texas after an unremarkable trip. We were prepared for all sorts of hell with closed roads getting out of North Carolina, but it was really quite smooth. So we have left the place where all the water destroyed everything, and come back to the place where there is no water. Everything here is brown and dead and crispy with major drought. We’re jerked between two terrible extremes and the lesson there is a very depressing one: there’s nowhere you can go anymore to be sheltered from climate horror.
The positive thing is that we have made it through all this mess relatively unscathed, and although the high temperature is still going to be over 90F for another week in TX, we did miss the worst of the heat and it’s good to be back home. Our dog thinks so, too.
The workers came to install our new kitchen today. (Well, half of it. The rest is for tomorrow.) Normally, I hate strangers encroaching on my territory, but now it was actually a pleasant day, mainly because…
My son had a free day from school, so while the workers were busy in the kitchen, we camped out in the master bedroom upstairs. I helped him with his French homework, we read comics, and we played Settlers of Catan for two players.
Our cat Minoes was frightened of all the noise downstairs so she came to find shelter with us on the big bed.
Poll worker assignment for Election Day came in! I’ll be at a site within easy walking distance of home, which means I can spend less brainpower on transport/meal breaks and more on the actual job.
Sunshine and paths covered in autumn leaves on my run! Lovely after a few days of heavy rain.
Recorded vocals for a song today after blowing off interpreting work, lol. I’ll have to redo the master tomorrow because of a balance issue I wanna fix. XD
Be safe, Keltena !
Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.
Making plans for more cooking adventures this weekend.
Caught a mouse and released it outside.
My sinuses are clear today after torturing me yesterday.
Looking forward to my plans for my birthday on Monday.
