What is the last game you played just because? Share your April updates!

The latest game I’ve been playing was Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. It is incredibly long and tedious at times, and each of the chapters could have been its own self-contained game. But I do like the characters and story, and how a strategy game is combined with the RPG.

as for the favorite one to play just for play is Diablo 2, I love it

Well, I don’t have time usually to play at will, so that’s why we started a Twitch TV show for Spanish Interactive Fiction. So, most Fridays we (Jade and I) play live, and alternate between classic games, neo-classics, and recent adventures. And sometimes we even play with the authors (this has proven the most popular shows, of course).

Most recent game was Retorno a las mazmorras de Antur. A modern dungeon crawler that looks and plays fantastic (done in Adventuron):

But the penultimate game was The Hobbit IN SPANISH!!!, an amazing milestone thanks to a port done to the game to the system DAAD. That play was weird and frustrating but fascinating.

I know that most of you would not be capable of enjoying this in Spanish, but I just share this with you to let you know that this format exists and maybe could be replicated in English.

I’m having a great time with feMC! The time differential clearly did the writers some good. Even though she is silent, I have a strong sense of her personality.

I’ve been grinding a lot. I don’t really need to, but It’s a nice destress. I’d call it meditative, even.

While it’s mechanically superior to FES in every way, I still miss being able to select inherited skills. It took me almost an hour to get the Queen Mab of my dreams (I needed someone to handle thunder magic). Still, this is currently the definitive P3 experience (not just P3P but feMC)!

Discovered two fun little snacks on the Itch front page today: Charm Studies is a cute little Picross VN, and Farmula Grain Prix is a pixel-art race-against-the-clock farming game which is actually kind of hilarious. And…I think actually has a certain amount of strategy about buying upgrades.

The wait is over (what, you weren’t waiting?)! I have completed the FeMC path in Persona 3 Portable. I agree with @Encorm : this is the definitive experience of Persona 3. The new social links are more polished and interesting than are those from vanilla/FES. Some characters (looking at you, Junpei) are more likable. That odious beach scene is gone.

Mechanical:

  • The absence of manual fusion choices is still felt (I won’t tell you how long it took me to get the Messiah I wanted).
  • Controllable party members!

???

  • Ship #1: tragic, unrequited love with Shinji
  • Ship #2: Mitsuru
  • Actual relationship: none, the heart wants what the heart wants

Final team (sadly tilted toward Star, Moon, and Judgement because of level availability plus SL progress)

  • Messiah
  • Lucifer
  • Satan
  • Helel
  • Beelzebub
  • Asura
  • Metatron

A little too much focus on the Abrahamic adversary for my tastes, but I had to go where the power was.

General thought: it’s a shame that Empress is pushed so far to the end of the calendar, effectively shutting off that fusion option.

A good game with many problems from the male/previous versions resolved. I’ll hang on to my save and try to NG+ someday.

Glad you agree with my opinions, and glad you had a good time! Any idea what you’re gonna play next?

It’s hard coming off of a game that scratches so many itches. I love collecting the personae, I love fusion. I love, essentially, dark Pokemon (that isn’t fair, SMT predates Pokemon). To have all of the characters layered on top of that, and to go so far as to link character development and battle prowess in concrete ways… well, the games are a sadly rare treat for me. I think I will try Golden again (thanks to the rerelease), but I will need a little break first.

Is there anything you would recommend? I primarily game on the PS5, but there is a much larger overlap between platforms than there was even a few years ago. I have a Switch, too. I like a broad range of stuff, though I sadly lack the focus/concentration for things like Civilization.

Unfortunately I’ve played exactly one PS5 game (Horizon: Forbidden West) so uh that’s my recommendation! In terms of the Switch there’s also a pretty cool VN called Gnosia that I felt scratches a persona-like itch with its cast.

I’ve also heard good things about Final Fantasy XIV, although I haven’t played it myself because I cannot be trusted with MMOs. (Apparently you can just treat it as a fairly long single player game, but I doubt that makes it less addictive.)

I think Forbidden West is available with Playstation Plus Ultimate (or whatever it’s called), so there’s zero risk in trying it out. I’ll give it a look! Though I enjoy VNs but never know what to try, I’m not involved in any online scene that discusses them. So I’ll look into it.

I avoid them for the same reason! I just lack the discipline. Even if I have heard that it is, surprisingly, the best single-player FF in years.

Be forewarned, it’s a sequel so if you haven’t played Horizon: Zero Dawn yet you’ll be pretty confused. I loved Zero Dawn so if you can get your hands on it I’d consider that worthwhile.

Anything on the PS5 you’d recommend? I’d like to try and use ours more. (Besides Elden Ring, which is definitely on my list but is going to wait for a less chaotic time in my life.)

On the Switch side of things, the Metroid Prime remaster released recently, and with a normal control scheme! So if anyone was put off by the controls on the Wii or GameCube, or didn’t snatch the game back when it was affordable, this might be a good opportunity to give it a go.

I played and liked HZD! I forgot the sequel existed. I threw myself so fully into writing my game that I went from a daily player to hardly ever touching my consoles. It took over my life! I’m resisting the urge to start another one right away. I should play some video games first, I think.

For that reason (opening up the PS app on my phone), recent plays are sporadic. I can see that my most recent completed games are:

  • Resident Evil 4 (remake)
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Elden Ring
  • Soul Hackers 2
  • Disco Elysium
  • Doki Doki Literature Club
  • Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • P5: Strikers
  • Bloodborne
  • Demon’s Souls

On Switch, my only recent pickup is Fire Emblem: Engage. I enjoyed it, but not as much as Three Houses. I’m sure many Persona fans would agree.

I also play World of Horror from time to time, a weird hypercard tribute that is probably going to be in early access forever (my one non-IF PC game). [EDIT: WoH just got a content update a couple of weeks ago] I enjoyed all of those games. P5 Strikers was a surprise, since I dislike mousou games. I even got the platinum.

Thanks for the reminder! I’ve had my eye on this.

Ever since I finished Twilight Princess, I have been very greatly desiring more Zelda. So I’m getting back into Breath of the Wild, which I haven’t finished yet, though I’ve played quite a bit over the course of a few years. I’m really enjoying it! I get to explore anywhere, and fight cool monsters… It feels adventurous, which is just what I’m looking for. If there’s one thing that really appeals to me most about Zelda, it’s the adventure.

It did take me a while to get used to it, though. I’d gotten so familiar with the Wiimote controls in Twilight Princess that it was really jarring using the regular ol’ buttons and joysticks for this game, especially since I hadn’t played it in many months, but it didn’t take too long to relearn the controls thankfully. Now I’m having a ton of fun with it! I’m really really excited to see what will happen with Tears of the Kingdom. It looks like it’s going to be really awesome.

Just finished Infidel, from which I learned that the ancient Egyptians wrote entirely in regular expressions.

Recently, prominent archaeologers specialised in Ancient Egyptian history have begun to rethink the purpose of what were until now thought of as monuments and temples in honour of faraos and gods. The many phrases like “The snake hisses in the sand,” “A grain of sand is in the eye,” or “This is my nose,” suggest giant toddler preschool training facilities.

(The research remains unclear on whether the facilities were giant, or the toddlers.)

Either that, or Graham Nelson discovered time travel and went back to match reality to his designs.
