It’s definitely not my best one, I’m afraid! And I wonder if I would have been more inquisitive in the game if I had played it in a less tired state.
Amazing pull. Slow clap.
Hopefully you don’t mind me chiming in with this long after the fact (the perils of catching up on many, many review threads now the comp is over)
Spoilers for The Den
As I understood it from the game, the virus doesn’t make people who contract it infertile; rather, it causes them to give birth to infertile children, hence the discovery being delayed until the point where the virus victims’ first children have grown old enough to be having children of their own.
What plausible biological mechanism could cause a virus to have this effect is another question, of course, and I don’t think it’s the only liberty The Den takes with biology, but I enjoyed the story enough that I was willing to roll with it.
Oh, yeah, that makes sense!
authors note
…just to confirm, yeah, that’s spot on. The biology is more in service to some of the themes - ie. the responsibility of parents and their children. There’s a fair bit of artistic license when it comes to the science, but I was aiming for just enough to be able to suspend disbelief!
