Van der Nagel Papyrus Help Thread

EDIT: My hints for the early game

I imagine I won’t be the only one getting stuck in this game, so might as well start a thread for it!

What I'm stuck on

H - plinths
I - iron grate
N - poison gas (changed)
T - calendar? (changed)
U - padlocked cabinet
W - rusted cabinet
Message - filter the laser through “purple, pink, then green”?

My inventory

You are carrying:
a clipboard
a turquoise ring
a blue Post-It note
a paper sack (open but empty)
a green apple
a laminated map

I also have one homunculus, from the piece of fudge, but it doesn’t stay where I want it to stay. I’ve also found what the turquoise ring does, but I haven’t been able to figure out why that would be useful…

WAIT. Can I use that to get to the other side of Noble Gases without transforming it into the poison gases? Be right back!

Well, that did work! But now I’m stuck again. I now have a scalpel and a powerful laser, but neither of those seems like it’ll help with any of my current problems. I thought I could cut the cobwebs with the scalpel, and thus destroy the iron grate, but no dice.

Related:

I was stuck there for a while too for the same reason
hint: the default cut response is a bit misleading, you don’t need to do anything fancy
solution: you can just PULL the cobwebs (I think GET might work too)

Ohhh! I assumed if the scalpel didn’t work, I needed a battleaxe or something.

Yeah, me too. I spent ages looking in vain for a portable mirror to redirect the laser

This is pretty much where I am too, though I think I’ve figured out one or two other bits:

Unlike my flailing in Course Correction, where I didn’t realize I could just type IN instead of OPEN DOORS, I realized I could break through the cobwebs. Of course, the noble gases still provide a barrier to being able to fully explore the northern part of the map in both regular and altered form, but based on a couple hints on post-its I realized you could put the scroll in the turquoise ring, which “freezes” the effect, so you can walk around without it altering your surroundings.

Now I’ve got the accessible part of the map pretty thoroughly explored in both forms, so I think it’s pretty much puzzle time, and since I’m sick and my brain is fuzzy, not sure how much more progress I’m going to make. I’ve gotten a couple indications of things that seem like they’ll be somehow important, beyond the already-mentioned laser:

  • a clue about the leading letters of certain lists spelling things out.

  • a list of nonstandard zodiacal animals

  • the triangular/square/hexagonal panels and plinths

  • a color-to-noble-gas mapping

  • a mention of “X marking the spot” – X is missing from the 5 by 5 grid, and as for other rooms I haven’t gotten to, S in a donut-hole in the SE, and A and F are off in the NW. Haven’t seen any indication of how to get to those.

Here’s my inventory:

the Van der Nagel papyrus
a can of Tab
a cheap flashlight
a plastic homunculus
an emerald homunculus
a sandstone tablet
a white Post-It note
a scalpel
a crisp notepad
a fudge homunculus
a red apple
a gold homunculus
a wooden shingle
a human femur

Or, unaltered:

a turquoise ring
a can of peanuts
an UV flashlight
a plastic crystal
an emerald shard
a clipboard
a blue Post-It note
a jeweler’s hammer
an old notepad
a piece of fudge
a green apple
a golden leaf
a laminated map
a broken umbrella

Oh, the one other thing there worth noting is the emerald shard; I got that by hitting the statue with the jeweler’s hammer, since there was a note obliquely pointing to that. No immediate use I’ve found for it, though – possibly it interacts with the laser somehow?

Hope this is helpful to others who have more stick-to-itiveness than I’m currently able to muster

Just so others don’t get confused: You got the emerald shard that way. You got the plastic crystal another place.

I would focus on the NW area before the other one.

Ooh, you’re a bit farther than me then! It sounds like we’ve explored the same rooms, but I only have two homunculi, fudge and emerald; I’m missing the other two.

It seems like they should go on the plinths in H—if you freeze the papyrus (with the ring) in a room far away from H while carrying the homunculi, they’ll be frozen in their altered form, while H is in its unaltered form with the plinths intact. But I need to find the other two before that will work.

Oops, thanks for the correction – made a quick edit! Told you I was sick  Somehow I was convinced the plastic one was the altered version of the emerald one, when of course they clearly each correspond to a homunculus!

Definitely don’t ask me where I found the plastic one, that bit of information is long gone from my brain.

I feel like there should be a secret room behind the poster in B, but I’ve had no success finding it. Nor the acrostic clue.

Oh yeah, that works! Did I miss a clue pointing to an association between the homunculi and the plinths?

I went back and checked on the one additional homunculus you’re missing (the way to get the other is spoilered at the bottom of my big post) :

It’s in the Den

Mess around with the chandelier and it’ll pop out

Sadly I already have emerald, it’s plastic and gold I’m missing. But I’ll go mess with the chandelier now! And gold must be in the Gilded Room, surely? EDIT: Yep!

Lol my brain is clearly too baked to make progress here since I can’t even keep track of homunculi; I got them on their plinths but didn’t notice any changes, hopefully you have better luck!

I feel like the plinths have something to do with the four points on the calendar, but I’m not sure which should be which. Fudge comes in cubes, but a plastic crystal, an emerald chunk, and a gold leaf, not so much.

I don’t know the logic but trial and error seems to work.

Hmm, it seems like the calendar panels are also supporters. I don’t know what that would mean, though…

If you want some hints:

There is a secret passage in B, but it’s not behind the poster.

You’re not using the acrostic clue on a document you find within the game, it’s more meta than that.

I’ve kind of given up for now because at a certain point the game begins to revolve around a mechanic that I’m extremely not good at (and which I think is implemented in a frustrating way), but I’ve explored the whole map except the secret X room and gotten three papyri, so I can give hints up to a point if anyone wants to ask me about anything.

Why not both?

I found the third papyrus! Good grief, this looks complicated…

There does seem to be an acrostic on the second + third papyrus, WALK THROUGH, but it sounds like that’s not what the clue is about?
