Sounds like we need a poll to find the real game for beginners!
You could win my game. I guess it was too easy then. Maybe I should add some soup cans to my next game, people seem to talk about soup cans a lot…
Without having a poll yet, I learnt IF with Night House. Not the best for learning, but definitely not a bad one. That might just be me, though. I went on immediately after to play H2G2. (Relying on hints the whole way, then failing on the toothbrush puzzle.)
I’ve closed the poll. Two responses were above 50% and were significantly higher than the third place response. Those were:
-Add a Best Beginner Game of 2024 to this IFDB Awards (done!), and
-Run a Best Beginner Game of All Time poll (2024 edition) not part of these awards.
So, that’s what I’ll do. I’ll post the Best Beginner Game of All Time poll (2024 edition) right now (otherwise it’d be the 2025 edition!). Now, the ideas that started this discussion were @dfabulich’s, and the results indicated above aren’t connected to the IFDB Awards anymore, so if he wants to do something different, that’s completely within his purview. For now, I’ll make the poll:
The old poll said to avoid children’s games, and @mathbrush’s new poll doesn’t have that restriction, so that gives people more options, too.
I think this thread got derailed at some point; mathbrush was asking about possible new award categories.
How about the following?
- Pinnacle Award (for best overall)
- Outstanding Wordcraft
- Outstanding Plot
Outstanding Worldbuilding[EDIT: Oops – already a category!]- Outstanding Puzzle Design
- Outstanding NPC Design
- Outstanding Technical Implementation
- Outstanding Multimedia Experience
IIRC that’s already one. Lots of the others are too similar to the XYZZY Awards, too.
While I’m not looking to add tons and tons of new categories, I am okay with adding categories similar to the XYZZY’s. In the two years the IFDB awards have run, they seem to have filled a pretty different niche from XYZZY in terms of who is interested and the time of year and such, so I’m no longer worried that they would have a negative effect on the XYZZY’s if they were too similar. It’s kind of like that Mad Men scene:
IFDB Awards: “I hope I’m not causing you trouble.”
XYZZY Awards: “I don’t think about you at all.”
So I’m looking to add at most one or two categories (and only if voters want it), but if one of those is similar to XYZZY, it should be fun.
