The funny thing about that scene is the director had to also get nude to convince the actors to go through with it.

There can’t be a journey of naivety to naive fascism if the original characters aren’t naive. I could never believe that the Carmen of the film (especially as played by Denise Richards ) would be involved in anything as cunning as assisting an asteroid strike.

Agreed. I don’t think Carmen is involved in assisting an asteroid strike. I think she exceeded the bounds of her orders by further optimizing their flight path. I believe the main characters are just as naive as they are portrayed. My head canon is that the Federation likely had to intervene and redirect the asteroid a second time (off screen) after it was knocked off course by impacting Carmen’s ship.

I haven’t seen the movie recently enough to have any intelligent input on that part of the conversation, but I’ve gotta say that the Heinlein hate in this thread brings me great joy.

Renamed the topic to both reference slingshotters (people who try to get intercepts with as many planets as possible with one burn), and also open up discussion for more variety of sci-fi.
