Some Thoughts On IF-Octane 2026

So, uh…

Stuff has gotten extremely busy, stressful, and chaotic for me lately. I’m not sure I have the ability to work on IF-Octane anymore.

More importantly, though: The purpose of creating IF-Octane was not to add another engine to the community toolkit. It was always a selfish endeavor to create tools for making a specific set of IF games.

So, with this in mind, I think it might be possible to make some JavaScript tweaks to Sugarcube 2, and also create an unsettlingly-strange and complex build pipeline for assembling twee files for tweego, which should all make these game ideas possible within a misused Twine environment.

As before, screen reader accessibility will be prioritized above visual user experience.

Now, this is my fallback plan, and I’m still investigating what this would entail. Of all the available IF technologies, Sugarcube 2 seems to be the closest to what I had planned for IF-Octane, though there is still some distance.

So… when Silverbacks comes out, it might be an IF Octane game, or it might be a Twine game. Either way, the gameplay mechanics will be the same: Turn-based combat with a moderately-thin world model, wrapped in a narrative framework.

This post is here to make sure that this doesn’t catch anyone by surprise.

That is all.

Either way, I look forward to the game. Don’t push yourself too hard, man. The world won’t end if you don’t get the game out at a certain time. Go at your own pace; your mental health and lack of burnout is important.
