Some proposed rule changes for IFDB Awards (now closed)

If anything I think there’s a silent majority egging on the TADS shenanigans and excited they’ve worked out! I’ll definitely vote once the new poll goes up.

I’m sweetening the deal with CORN CORN WILL FIX ME by making a mad scramble right after I just woke up to take a proper photo, recreating the very container of corn that originally inspired this game, and a close friend of mine is making it artsy. So… official cover art incoming for this one lol

I think when one considers news regarding national elections around the world (including my own country, the U.S.) over just the last decade, this would barely qualify as “shenanigans.”

Are you suggesting we need to up our game? Maybe storm IFTF World Headquarters?

(I imagine such a place, if it exists at all beyond a zoom call, as being held within the semi-extinct crater of a submarine volcano with everyone attending wearing Jules Vernesque diving apparatus and communicating with Wile E. Coyote style hand signs, fish and other wildlife clearly floating in between the boardmembers over their inexplicably outdoor boardroom table.)

There’s a Peter Watts novel that goes something like this.

(DISCLAIMER: This is a joke; the Rifters series is capital-B Brutal. Do not check it out just because you think this joke is funny. I was exaggerating the connection.)

Wow, that was quick! IFArchive already processed the upload! (Thank you Jacob Nevins!)

I am also eating the corn in the cover as a good luck charm that this works out. I just want that on record.

BEHOLD

My recreation of the corn which started it all, down to the type of container.

Let the effort put into this cover be a token of good faith when qualifying this under the TADS category~

Okay, I’ve closed the polls!

Based on the results:

-The polls will be merged (although see more below)
-The merged polls will have the IFDB anonymous setting
-My games can be included in the system
-If the XYZZY awards are scheduled for the same time as the IFDB awards, the IFDB awards will move to later in the year
-The 5-game requirement for systems and genres will remain the same (although see later down)
-Best feelies is being dropped as a category.

Now then, onto some new polls, based on the previously received feedback.

Should TADS be allowed this year due to the inclusion of the game GET CORN?

For those not following earlier, TADS only had 4 games released last year as of the making of this poll. This disqualifies TADS from getting its own award this year.

However, it turns out that a mini-game called GET CORN was written last year and circulated among testers. It has now been added to IFDB. The only sticking point is that it wasn’t ‘officially released’ last year.

I’m fine with bending the rules here since TADS had a great year in 2023, but I wanted to put it to a vote. Note that this vote isn’t ‘Does TADS satisfy the current criteria’, but ‘should we allow this special case’:

  • ‘Outsanding TADS Game’ should be included as a category in the IFDB awards this year
  • It should not

Less Rigid Genre Categories

Next, some people dislike the requirement that games have to be tagged with specific genres for the genre votes (i.e. unless a game includes ‘Fantasy’ in its name, it isn’t eligible for Best Fantasy Game of 2023).

  • You should not be able to vote for games for genre competitions unless they have that genre on IFDB
  • You should be able to vote for any game for any genre.

As voted in the earlier polls, the rules stay the same that at least 5 games have to have the given genre listed on IFDB. It does not have to be one of the dropdown genres, so, for instance, if 10 games had a new genre like ‘Drama’, that would be fine.

One thing last year people struggled with was finding games to vote for, so a search for IFDB for the given genre was linked to each IFDB poll. Before the rule was you can only vote for games that come up in that search. With this new rule, I’d like to keep those links in the polls, but only as suggestions.

So, this poll is only in the case that people pick the second option above:

  • Links to IFDB genre searches should be kept as ‘suggestions’ for genre polls
  • No such links should be included in polls

Miss Congeniality

People have voted out the author’s choice awards. Common complaints were that they made the competition have too many polls and it was hard to know which poll to vote in.

Someone has suggested bringing back author’s choice poll but only for best game of the year.

This would be a poll where each vote is only counted if the person voting is registered to an IFDB account that has a published game (as verified by me and/or the other IFDB mods if they want to check).

  • Let’s include an Author’s Choice for Best Game of the Year poll
  • Let’s not

You can run a search for this, e.g. “published:2023 system:tads”, which brings up the (now) five TADS games.

I get that, but I also suck.

I suspect there are a non-zero amount of others who suck in a similar way.

I am glad for the genre change. Just as an example I know of, Milliways is a ‘Science fiction comedy’.

No idea what you’re talking about. None.

Authors can vote other than the Miss Congeniality, riiiiight?

If they couldn’t it would cut out more than half of the votes we got last year, so that would be really obnoxious!

That would be a pretty amusing and utterly arbitrary rule.

No, sorry. This is the Player’s Choice Awards. Author scum like you can hit the bricks! [Bouncer tosses them out by the seat of their pants.]

@inventor200 , I’m really, really suspecting you to be this one person, merely for the giddy joy of dissent. I can just see you giggling while clicking the “It should not”-button, munching away on a fresh can of corn.

First time I read this, I’d missed the “recreating the very container of corn that originally inspired this game” post, and had Concerns about the safety of the original corn from ?October…
