Yeah, nah, I thought the same as you did; it was pretty arbitrary that I happened to read the ruling when it came down. And they might still be appealing? I haven’t been following it much… but it doesn’t look good.

I personally feel like a book that was originally published 40 years ago should really be in the public domain and that copyright’s duration should have never been extended beyond the original 28 years with the option to renew for another 28 years(if anything, I’d say the renewal should have been scrapped as 28 years already seems overly long, if not excessively so(as far as I’m concerned, if 20 years is enough for patents, it should be enough for copyright and trademark)

But yeah, one of the sucky things about IP law is that, in practice, the people who need the protections it provides, by and large, can’t afford enforcement, and the ones with the resources to enforce it are often making so much that genuine losses to piracy are essentially a rounding error in their ledgers.
