Narrascope 2024 videos?

Thanks, @JoshGrams ! That was my test last night for a new simple stack that seems to do okay with remote + low volume + thin-wall bleed – I have like 5 to do with this same stack, just the same way. I’ll quickly chew through those, and go to the next challenge in the stack.

If there is stuff that is maddening to you that you can understand – i mean, glulx itself is just garbage to understand in this program, and there there is that section where does a stack of gobbledegook that becomes even harder to catch which consonants… well, send me timecodes here of patches that really won’t do for this set, and I’ll do surgical cleaning there.

But my goal now is still to get the full set up so they are useful, and then respond to needs to improve where the files aren’t useful..

This is the 2024 schedule by the way:

I’m processing next these remote ones using my stack from last night’s test – these all have different audio level issues, but similar needs to rescue a remote feed that sounds to the cleaning software a bit like a noisy television on the other side of a wall. So rescuing these at all will make me so happy, because we’ll all get to enjoy these!

  • Random Testing for Narrative Games – Autumn Chen
  • Rocks and Why They Matter – Hexe Fey
  • The Art of the Shitty First Draft – Rick Stemm
  • Utsuge and Nakige in the Dating Sim Genre: Why is There So Much Death in my Dating Games? – Mar Ferreri
  • Teaching About Mental Illness through Play – Tim Rattray (though see note below!)

I’m chewing through these, having set all of these up over a month ago. And just running clean, norm, plugin plugin test plugin plugin test for my outputs. This version features izotope RX11 Voice De-noise to scrape through to intelligibility. And for the ones truly truly messed up like “Teaching About Mental Illness through Play – Tim Rattray” that have never been understood in its live stream or in my laptop – that’s my highest mountain challenge – I have to use aggressive means of ripping out the voice from the noise and even doing the old dialogue editing trick where I build up like 4-5 thin layers of really isolated and frequency limited voice over top of the still-really-noisy to give the feeling of that voice amplified in that space, and then start processing from there. That one will be like 5hrs of processing even doing this simplest-of-deliveries but am crossing my fingers that at least we’ll all understand his talk well.

HI folks! I mentioned this to the two who pinged me wanting to help take a crack at cleaning up some of this media – I very much DO want to support this activity in a really fun way. We are tempted to add a thread for this into our discord as a part of the “Playing-NarraScope” forums channel we are about to launch. (To get everyone playing the games by or mentioned in descriptions of talks, leading up to the event.)

So would any of you here want to chat with me there and engage in the most interactive adventure of all – audio engineering “cooking” experiments shared with each other! I’ll share sources and do my best to play along and help transduce media files so more people can experience this.

This is not interactive fiction, but frankly the triangulation to get good, audible content out of these great talks about narrative games is sorta like the world’s least murdery “real documents” mystery box. But if you are like me, this is at least engaging enough to have a lot of things to say about it, and a lot of counterintuitive experiments to try.

For example, I failed to find a good route to synch up the talks in the two rooms next to each other from last year such that I can output a “noise mask” of one room, and chop it out of the other. All attempts to do this failed for me, and probably because I need to adjust timing for like a few samples for sound to travel. dunno. But how fun would it be to solve this weird one-off problem with some automation, and then at least push about 16 talks through it!

I am completely booked until later tonight on pure conference producing and sponsorship follow up, but I want to complete the export for the five listed in the note before tonight or tomorrow morning. And do this with comments and notes right in that Discord thread where people can comment, play along, try things themselves.

Let me know if any of this sounds worth doing!

I can’t see the (Narrascope?) Discord. The first link to it in this thread gives a ‘You don’t have access or weren’t invited’ response when I try going to it via Discord’s Quickswitcher. I also tried an invite link near the top of the page https://2024.narrascope.org/ which says the invite expired.

That invite link (which is the same one at https://narrascope.org/contact/) is non-expiring. When I try it in a fresh browser window, it doesn’t show any errors.

yeah works for me. links to the iftf discord which is connected to/hosts narrascope

Okay, I got in. Some more funny stuff happened on the way but I think it was probably just Discord login weirdnesses.

Wade, i’ll see you in there – making that channel in about an hour – so DM me your discord handle so i can find you and invite you to this non-private thread in the #playing-narrascope forums channel!
