Honestly, a relief! I am an inveterate tinkerer.
Time to tinker on ECTOCOMP ideas instead for a little bit!
Psst, unfortunately, no one will notice if you just keep tinkering. Since I wasn’t quite satisfied with my homemade soft keyboard (the buttons were rather small), I tinkered up another version of it.
I’ve been working on a small side project to learn TADS: a nine room adventure with working title “Solo Bard” about a Bard character trying to escape with some honor after being separated from the rest of his party in the bowels of a dungeon.
Not thematically right for Ectocomp, but perhaps I’ll have it written in time for Spring Thing.
EctoComp ideas, now?
I usually get EctoComp ideas with 2 weeks left before the IFComp deadline, with ideas that didn’t quite fit in. It’s a slight distraction.
Oh, I made some fixes today, to the in-game map. 80% of the room titles were left-aligned, but I wanted them all center-aligned.
Also, a few connectors were off by a couple pixels. It’s something I thought I fixed, but I didn’t. (Well, now I did.)
I hope all the games will be soon ready to download becouse I will travel on holidays tomorrow for a week and I won’t have wifi.
ifcomp.org says “The judging period will begin during the day on September 1”, so you may be lucky or you may not… (I guess “the day” is likely to be a USA-timezone day)
The latest competition email said it would most likely be between 6pm and 9pm Eastern Time on the 1st. I’m guessing that’s probably a little late in the day for @Jade but hopefully gives a little more to go on all the same.
@Jade Games are now up, on the offchance it’s not too late for you.
That’s what I’m doing. ![]()
I really liked one previous year’s thing of having discussion threads for games as well, because you can also have a personal review thread, and then you can link your reviews but mostly as to me I felt like it helped create interesting and focused discussion. I don’t want to start one off though if nobody else likes the idea…
I think it’s a good idea, if you have something to discuss! (I haven’t gotten through a single game yet, though, so I have nothing to actually contribute…)
Definitely start specific game threads or reviewer threads as desired.
Also helpful to tag any discussion specifically about plot or spoilers of games with the ifcomp2026-game tag so people who don’t want to read about games before they play them can filter the tag.
Eons ago, we used to make separate categories for game discussion and general IFComp discussion, but the tags help avoid forum clutter.
It’s still not on ifcomp.org right now, but there is a zip on the IF Archive – hopefully with the right content.
At least at a cursory glance, that seems to have the right games in it!
What do you select for gamplay platform and what do you upload?
My game is released as a website generated by the dialog compiler, and I thought I had to host it myself. The instructions made it sound like I had to upload a page that links to my game. But the page I uploaded is pretty much just a duplicate of the ifcomp page and “download” downloads the page with the links. Ideally I think I’d like the ifcomp’s play online to go to the game on my website and the download to download the z8 file from my website. But now I’m also wondering if I should just uploaded my z8 file directly because I didn’t know about the transcript collection, and I think I’ll miss out on those.
I selected Twine (which is what I used to write it) and my upload is just an index.html page with a single line of javascript:
<script>
window.location.href = "YOUR URL HERE";
</script>
This sends anyone who opens the file to whatever URL you put in.
For anything with a transcript, though, yeah–you would definitely miss out on those, and that is a big plus in the “host on ifcomp” column!
If you just upload your Z8 file, then the IFComp machinery will generate a website for you, and you’ll get transcripts.
1,4 GB ???
(sorry, was offline four days for the first phase of this computer’s maintenance)
