Oh my word I am so all over this. Finding Martin is one of my absolute favourites. I should also mention that I spent a fairly sizable chunk of time last year writing a set of Invisiclues hints, in case such a thing turns out to be useful to you! (I won’t offer any hints in the thread unless you ask specifically.)

All I remember is what had to be the most complicated mechanism I’d seen in a parser game, located fairly early.

Assuming that you’re referring to either the pocket watch or the train track, don’t worry! By the time you’re done, neither of those will be the most complicated mechanism you’ve seen in a parser game.

Of course, that’s how it always works in these games. There is never a clear reason why it has to be the protagonist doing the quest rather than someone closer to the person needing rescuing.

Well, Martin is weird, but weird enough so that even his mailbox doesn’t work like normal?

You’ve seen a hint of this by now with the fact that the pocket watch can be used to play movies on the video screen, but rest assured that this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things in Martin’s house that are controlled in weird ways.
