Well, I guess at least you didn’t highlight it in Irresistable SirenSong Blue (which I’m pretty sure is the official color for links on this site). Dragonstrike would not have seeded my subconscious the same way. :]
Sounds like I need to check out Consulting Detective! I know it by reputation of course, but its game-iness and density would repel my wife, while the less imposing deck of cards and nifty computer interface in Detective sucked her in. Maybe I can gateway drug this…
Now that I’ve been through them all, I need to retroactively award a few points. I know. This totally feels like Dumbledore putting his hand on the House Cup scale doesn’t it?
For one, now that this ‘WAAY more adult than last year’ suite of games is under my belt…ehhh not that. Is complete. Now that it’s complete, I definitely owe a bonus point to Ribald Bat Lady. It had the unenviable task of being the first game, not just adult game, and in retrospect against the field I find its humor more winning than I initially credited.
I also need to give a point to both Puppet Head and Gestures Toward Divinity based on a question @jade asked about my favorite game. I realized that the gap between Engaging and Transcendent is MUCH larger in my head than Engaging and Sparks or Sparks and Mechanical. Those two works may have failed my head canon definition of Transcendent, but I full on ENJOYED them more than their score ended up reflecting. That’s why I have bonus points in the first place!
With these, my bonus rate conferrence is about on par with last year, so this feels right and gives me a spread I feel better about. Look, you don’t like it, take it up with management. My boss is same as Dumbledore’s.
Thanks for the great and lentghy review… You even found the bug, which sadly I detected to late.
As you take interest in the subject, i want to give you my perspective on the dropping out ending:
Defintly dropping out is a solution for some people. I wouldnt dare to put a statistic on it, but i would figure not below 10%.
Some drop out and still have symptons, but its easier to deal with them in a less stressfull enviroment.
Generally its true, that stress is the major factor for an psychotic episode (drugs consumption can be seen as stress for the body),
therefore I do believe dropping out can be seen as a solution.
Ofcourse there are many ways to only partially drop out without changing location.
Certainly there are strong advocates, that believe, people on an episode should not go to a psychiatric ward, but rather do gardening work in a retreat or something comparable.
I must admit, i am not happy, how easily that ending is found, specially as many players are happy with that solution, even though the text trys to make them reconsider.
Interesting Idea to change the question to “have you had enough?”. I do see problems with my solution, as most people seem to misscount. With your solution they might jump there to quickly, as people try to get through the game as fast as possible, but who knows? Probably worth a shot.
Thanks again. I never expected to get so many reviews. Its really awesome.
Thanks so much for your absolutely hilarious (yet very insightful) review! It was a delight to read about Mkhcdg’s misadventures, and I’m happy to hear that you found them engaging.
I really appreciate the feedback, too, and am taking note of all of it for the post-comp version – especially everything relating to timed text. Much has been said about this pachydermic feature, and I’m looking forward to analyzing it in the postmortem!
(For the record, it is possible to turn off the timed text after finishing the game once, but I think I need to make that option more obvious since right now it’s only briefly mentioned on the ending screen! In any case, although the game is designed to have some amount of replay value, a single playthrough should be more than enough to experience all the important stuff. )
I think what you were experiencing were the scenes that have only a dark screen and the sound of footsteps walking into the next exhibit… while playing without sound.
