Iron Chef looking for TADS challengers

I would also like to be a provisional TADS challenger, with the provision that there is a good likelihood if I sign up, that I will only be able to eke out 1 hr per day tops in the wee hours to work on the challenger game. Consequently it might not be much of a challenger…

How about “Team TADS” T-shirts?

Yes, the plan is to have a thread on the intfiction board for the judges, challengers, and audience to commentate.

I hope all of you consider signing up, even as a provisional challenger!

TADS enthusiasts,

As you probably know, Jim Nelson was forced to withdraw as Iron Chef TADS due to personal circumstances.

As you may also know, @jjmcc placed second in the audience vote for challenger selection.

The natural choice for a next episode (sometime early next year) would be a TADS challenge, but we can’t have one unless there is a defending Iron Chef. If no replacement Iron Chef can be found, then the next episode will probably be an Inform 7 challenge.

Does anyone else want to take up the title and be the champion for TADS? If so, please send me a PM. If you have been following the pilot episode, you can see how effectively Draconis (Iron Chef Dialog) used it as a chance to promote Dialog, and the number of people who were interested by the capabilities that were shown.

I can think of several people who are worthy of the title of Iron Chef TADS, @inventor200 and @johnnywz00 being two in particular. If he had more time to contribute, I’d suggest @Eric_Eve.

For what it’s worth, if this wasn’t a winter event and also if I didn’t just go through 8 straight weeks of brain fire, I would jump in. Right now, though, I am a husk and need to recover.

Concur with BlindHunter, albeit I can’t hide my conflict of interest in endorsing his suggestion of @Eric_Eve : after noting the big improvements of the a3Lite library stemming from his porting of Polyadv I can reasonably expect substantial byproducts from his partecipation to the IronCHif challenge.

I can’t ignore the likes to my previous post, so, of course, albeit the non-negotiable, matter-of-principle precondition remains, I’m still available as “last reserve to be thrown on the battlefield”, provided that the explicit amendment I require is accepted.

Best regards from Italy,
dott. Piergiorgio.

I can’t speak for Otis, but to me, “excuse any English mistakes from a non-native speaker” seems like an entirely reasonable rule for a specific challenge. The point of the show is to celebrate IF writing, after all, and I’m quite sure your English is better than most of our Italian!

It’s extremely appealing and something I’d be well content to bury myself in for a week, but my wife will be in the final stages of pregnancy during the timeframe of the TADS episode, and it’s difficult enough for me to carve out “playtime” under ordinary circumstances. Really sorry!! I would also love to see @Eric_Eve go at it if he had the inclination…

It might be interesting in theory, but I’m not sure I could cope with the practicalities. As I understand it, one of the requirements is that participants need to post something about their progress every day of the week in which they’re taking part. I can’t commit to being available to do that at some unknown date in the future (or possibly even a known one) given that I do have other things going on in my life and some days may be taken up with other things. Besides the polyadv project and adv3Lite maintenance are consuming all my available TADS 3 bandwidth right now.

i can’t do it because of timing, but even if i could, i’d only do it if we all accept i’d lose lol

All decisions regarding judging are the purview of each episode’s individual judges, and each judge’s own standards apply when deciding on numeric scoring. Because it is a contest of craft involving a blend of many different skills, “writing” is one of the five categories on which numeric scoring is issued, and fluency will potentially impact scoring in that category.

However, the primary purpose of numeric scoring is to serve as part of feedback presented to competing chefs. As has already been demonstrated by the pilot, any judge may choose a winner in contradiction to issued scores. Additionally, the ultimate victor is decided by audience vote, not the judges’ verdict.

Jim Nelson was selected as the original Iron Chef TADS on the basis of According to Cain, the highest-ranked TADS3 game listed on IFDB (currently at #39 on the IFDB Top 100). Both How Prince Quisborne the Feckless Shook His Title (#81) and Erstwhile (#97) also appear on the IFDB Top 100. I’m open to anyone who has the endorsement of the TADS community, and preferably someone who wants to spread the word about the unique strengths of TADS.

I’m glad to see that there is some interest in participation here, even if the timing of the next episode is poor for potential replacements for the Iron Chef TADS role. I’ll plan on the next episode being an Inform 7 episode, and I’ll check back after that.

Erstwhile is a Twine game. I have never written a TADS game. That is why I’d lose.

Concur and agree on the change of schedule. Let’s do the I7 episode first !

Of course, I expect also a new winner of the bubble beaker award
