Introducing Ourselves

Welcome to the club, Greg… now could you just scooch to the side so I can watch the game?

That’s so awesome that you published a book! I especially like that you’ve kept it grounded in reality and list existing technologies on your website. Brilliant! Sounds like a cautionary tale of where we are possibly headed. Is that sort of subtext embedded in your game as well?

I adapted a number of descriptions from the books for room and character descriptions, so there is a portion of the game where you hear some cautionary views of where the future can take us (particularly in the metaverse)… However, the books read more like a mission impossible movie, and the game is more like a zork, tongue-in-cheek, game… collecting treasures, and solving puzzles… not nearly as distopian or serious as the book. (Even though the books do tend to have a happy ending tendency to them)

Hey everyone! I’m Mike In Dallas. I fell in love with Infocom games around 1986, when my dad was posted to an Air Force Base in Germany, and we had really limited options for entertainment on our Apple IIc. Today, I mostly collect - I have a reasonable collection of mint, shrink-wrapped games - and I’m working on a side project to bring Infocom games to life using AI parsing and generation for any inputs that don’t change the state of the game. It’s coming along nicely, and hopefully I’ll be able to share it soon.

I’m glad for this community and everyone else whose lives were heavily influenced by the genius implementors of the 80s!

Hello!

I’m a hobbyist game developer. I’ve made some text based games: My Death Story https://akzidenz.itch.io/my-death-story, a sort of a comical puzzle-box and the game I’m most proud of, and So I bought a little chainsaw https://akzidenz.itch.io/so-i-bought-a-little-chainsaw, an interactive, choice-based story told entirely through product reviews.

I like writing and narrative and I want to incorporate more of it into my games so I’m slowly building the tools that will allow me to do that more easily. Forked https://github.com/oeloeloel/forked is a system I made for DragonRuby Game Toolkit https://dragonruby.itch.io/dragonruby-gtk (a game engine which I absolutely love) that lets me write interactive fiction in, effectively, markdown.

I played text adventures when I was small, like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=ouv80gvsl32xlion, though I never got out of the bedroom. My favourite was probably Humbug https://ifdb.org/viewgame?id=z37lzijvuz5gtsu2, though I never got out of the maze. I also enjoyed reading the Fighting Fantasy https://www.fightingfantasy.com books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Much later, after graduating art school, I became interested in experimental literature, especially the Oulipo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oulipo (I made a version of A Story as You Like It by Raymond Queneau https://akzidenz.itch.io/peas).

I’m happy to have found this forum and I look forward to reading more from you.

Hello there, nice to meet you all.
I’m Vukasin, 32 from Serbia.
I’ve grown up on the later era point and click adventures, Still Life, Syberia, The Longest Journey. Over time I became interested in game history and started trying out text adventures. I’ve enjoyed a few parser games but my own writing style is a choice based puzzle game.
I’ve published The Dragon of Silverton Mine for ifcomp2024 ( The Dragon of Silverton Mine ), and spend this month reading the reviews so I decided to transition from lurker to being somewhat active. I hope to keep wrting in Twine as well as test out Inform 7.
In general I love food, science fiction and fantasy literature and video essays.
All in all nice to meet you all!

Welcome Vukasin! The Dragon of Silverton Mine was the last game I played before judging closed for the comp and it was a really enjoyable note to finish on!

Hi, I’m Fluffy Bunny. I started playing text adventures in 1986 shortly after I lost my sight. I am still playing them now.
I started with the Titanic game then found Infocom.
Over the years I have played dozens and dozens and have never lost the love for them all.

Thanks AmandaB! Did you get the bad ending or the slightly less bad ending?

If there’s a worse ending than the destruction of the entire planet, I really need to replay it! I loved the writing and the news popups and… well, really everything about it. Really a fun game.

I am new to this forum.

My name is Roger Kilroy-Talbot and I am a member of The Icehouse collective https://the-icehouse.itch.io/. The Icehouse is an online collective of independent creative artists.

We are a gathering of creators, artists and devs, from all over the world, who make indie games and more, and we help each others. Our main projects are adventure games, but we enjoy everything. Our main purposes are to encourage creativity and motivate each others.

I have been a member of this collective for many years (I joined soon after it was formed) and have been involved in helping with the development of some of the Members’ games.

I am also a Conceptualiser for the Collective, Problem Solver, go-to Proofreader (English), and generally help out where I can.

In July 2023 I developed my first ever game for YazJamIV YAZJamIV - AI powered ... - itch.io https://the-icehouse.itch.io/ using Ren’Py.as RogerCAKT. I later took the decision to set up an new Identity as TreeDancer, where I hope to develop Games and Interactive experiences.

I am currently looking to develop further in Interactive fiction, so any help and advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Roger! Welcome to the forum.

I’d say that you should develop some criteria about what kind of IF you’re interested in so we can point you toward the authors most likely to be a good fit for your collective. There’s a broad range of IF out there, a big percentage of which is adventure games, and everybody would like more help and exposure. It’s an impossible task for you to play through it all, so I’m sure we’d all love to help you find the creatives most aligned with your collective’s vibe.

Hi! My name is Wednesday, they/them, dob 1991 (which is 33 right now, when you see this post in the future you’ll have to do a little math! which counts as a puzzle, the post is interactive)

I love horror, pet sims and dating sims–I love even more when these elements overlap! I’m big into experimental stuff. I cohost podcasts with my best friend, one is a lit discussion about various kinds of web horror and the other is an interactive horror mystery.

I’m also into rping, I do play-by-post and tabletop (virtual style, haha). I both play in them and gm them, and enjoy like messing about with other people’s systems.I do like practical arts and other sort of things too. I started a lot of these sentences with I, well, it’s me! Hello!

Amanda, many thanks for your reply.

The collective has at its core a grouping of independent adventure game devs and also has contact with other like-minded artists and devs. At the core level I am probably the only one who is currently working towards a Text/Novel-based experience.

My criteria would be more of a worldbuilding/saga type experience, as I have a particular interest in Celtic mythology, which I like to place within a Sci_Fi environment. This effectively mixes a concept of multiple parallel universes with a group of itinerant Celtic deities/semi-deities/warriors and sages who are tasked with solving issues within the multiverse using combinations of wizardry, fighting skills, problem-solving and artistry.

I already have a GDD developed which outlines the full scope of the multiverse and details some characters within it. What I hope to learn/discover through this forum is how to effectively structure and develop this outline into a viable first episode as an interactive novel. I have done three very brief games/experiences using Ren’Py, all of which are available on my websitehttps://treedancer.itch.io/ as are two videos relating to the Multiverse.

I would like to improve upon using Ren’Py to develop a better, more expansive experience for the player, which is why I am looking at an Interactive Novel
Any assistance/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Familiar face, new name. (The moderation team has been looped in throughout this process, don’t fret.) I’ve been privately contemplating, and using, this name with loved ones (like Dan, @pinkunz) behind the scenes for awhile now, and I figured it was probably about time I go a little more public with it. It feels a little odd, to be re-introducing myself in a space I’ve been a part of for about two years- but hi, it’s nice to see you all again! It’s Michael, now. Mikey’s fine, too, if we’re close. I would prefer they/them pronouns to be used for me. 24 at the time of posting.

I’m interested in primarily the Gothic- be it horror, or romance. As of late, I’ve been playing around with fantasy and soft magic systems: and getting really into solo TTRPG and journalling games. I really enjoy playing in our play-by-post TTRPG campaign as well. Passionate about LGBT rep. I generally play shorter, choice based interactive fiction- scary, or sentimental.

Huge fan of pink, and Sanrio- My Melody is my favourite. Many plushies, notebooks, and assorted apparel attest to this. I love curating fun antique pieces in my closet, and older jewellery: most of my pieces are from the 1970s forwards, though I have a few bits from the 1950s. I have 22.6GB and counting of kitten pictures on my phone. I like fountain pens- my go to is my Lamy Safari, in the limited edition color-way Light Rose: with either Hope Pink or Pink Ice, both from Diamine respectively as my ink of choice. I prefer to draft first by hand, though I usually work in Scrivener and Twine.

I am a digital artist- mostly stylized, semi-realistic portraiture of my TTRPG OCs. I’m a writer, and my time with poetry reflects in the resultant luridly florid purple prose scribbled in my notebooks. Occasional diarist, but less so, lately. I’m disabled- Hemophilia B and PTSD, which will likely crop up now and then. Also have a honours degree in Biology, with a minor in Psychology. Always happy to chat your ear off about betta fish, vintage and antique hunting, fountain pens, or the Gothic.

So you’re returning to IF, then?

As mentioned, the moderation team have been kept informed throughout this process. I approached them for their permission and approval of making a new account, and agreed to the suspension of the previous profile with a re-direct to this one in accordance with the forum’s rules on a member only being allowed one to avoid sock puppetry and other shenanigans.

Largely, that decision was made to make it a bit easier for other users to use my preferred name and pronouns, as frequent misgendering has been an issue for me in the past.

I’m not sure what your initial intent here was, but the medical event that precipitated me taking a step back from IF has concluded, yes. I have been primarily focused on independent, static fiction writing, and solo journalling / TTRPG games, not IF. I’ve been slowly building back up to interacting with the community, though I expect this to be an ongoing process.
