Introducing Ourselves

Welcome, Chloe. Give Hunger Daemon a try some time.

Seconding this, and I’d also recommend King of Shreds and Patches as something different from the typical 1920’s Deep One bash - it’s a Hastur-focused scenario set in Elizabethan London.

Thank you! I’m actually from the Twin Cities, so the setting is super familiar lol

Hey there! German native here too  I feel the same about the connection of creativity and logic (problem solving) in IF, it got me hooked pretty bad when I started writing my game. Figuring out how to put your idea into code is really rewarding, you should just dive into it!

I started playing that a little bit ago actually!! I was killed doing something stupid in the beginning and rage quit lmao. I do love the setting though, so I’ll give it another try since it’s been recommended

Will try - I’m still overwhelmed by all the documentation, tutorials, index in the IDE… - it’s good to have it, but it dawns on me that there’s no way to memorise all these things (and that’s why an index is needed).

I’m Drew. My first IF was Zork on a C64 at a friend’s house. It was pirated, and soon I would have a copy of my own. My first legitimately owned Infocom game was a Deadline folio.

I’ve repeatedly gone back to those old games over the years, and I’ve played a few of the more ā€œfamousā€ modern/contemporary IF titles.

I have an MFA in creative writing and half of an English PhD. I had to quit for health reasons.

Being a psychiatrically disabled person sucks, obviously, but I at least have plenty of time to write. I enjoy writing about IF and may try to do something in Inform someday.

Welcome Drew, sit, play and enjoy. If you really love review games, you should enter ifdb and post these reviews there.
As far as I can see you can take a lot of support asking here if you want to become an author.
I am with you in your illness, or condition. Good look.

Thank you Jade. I have posted some reviews on IFDB, and I think I did ok. I’ve set up a Wordpress site for more longform writing, and I am really enjoying that work.

I really appreciate the goodwill.

I’ve been on this forum for about 3 years posting random stuff occasionally but never introduced myself. So here goes nothing.

I’m a white 30 something disabled trans woman from the UK. My pronouns are she/her.

I’ve been a fan of IF since 1999 when I found a load of text adventures on an OCR software’s demo CD. They included the Zork Trilogy, an RPG type thing called Fallthru, the Adventions game pack, and another zip file of Inform games like Jigsaw, Theatre and Delusions.
As I’m blind, I can’t play the majority of video games, and audio games were only just starting to be a thing. Shades of Doom wasn’t out yet. So it was wonderful to stumble on these text games that I would actually be able to play using my screen reader to read the output.

since then I’ve gone through phases with interactive fiction, but even with audiogames now doing fancy stuff like 3d audio, there’s just something about reading text and letting my mind fill in all the rest. Also they don’t depend on how fast you can mash buttons to progress.

I tend to prefer games that have a good story as well as easy to medium puzzles. I look at hints more than I’d like and even sometimes use a walkthrough. But I try to solve stuff on my own first.
I absolutely detest mazes.

Interactive fiction also got me into MUDs. I spent way too much time on Discworld MUD and Miriani - a space themed one.

Apart from gaming, I love music. I have quite a varied taste, and I also play keyboards, drums and synths. I rarely release any music of my own though. I also love reading. One of my favourite authors is Terry Pratchett. My wife has also gotten me more into watching films.

I don’t really know what else to say other than thanks for putting up with me.

Welcome again.

Welcome!
Hadn’t heard of MUDs before, had to google it - interesting - thanks for widening my horizon.

Yeah they’re rather cool. I try not to play them much these days though in case I get sucked in again.

Hi Everyone!

I’m a physics grad student :woman_scientist: focused on teaching :woman_teacher: and STEM education! My hobbies are knitting :yarn:, sewing :scissors:, reading fanfic :books:, and now playing interactive fiction :old_key:!

I was first introduced to IF about a year ago with Anchorhead, and I fell in love with the genre. I have dreams of maybe one day writing my own IF, but it will remain to be seen whether that project ever gets off the ground. :upside_down_face:

I’m always looking for new recs, so please reply with your favorite IF!

I wrote my first game this year at age 50, and if I can do it, you can, too. This community will help. Take the plunge!

I also knit and sew! Yarn and thread and fabric are my drugs!
