IFWiki -- Reclassify "Probably Parser" games

We have some current projects at https://www.ifwiki.org/IFWiki:Editing_projects and one of them is:

Reclassify “Probably Parser” games".
Please check the games and change them to “Parser” (or one of the other options). See IFWiki:Games currently classified as Probably Parser.

It would be great if you could help. You’d just need to look at a game page, click “Actions → Edit with form”, then tick the relevant box on the form. You might choose games you’ve already played, or you could use the “Play online” links that appear on many pages. Hopefully you’ll find other things to add too!

(The background to this is at 🗃 IFWiki -- New games database announcement and Authoring systems which can only create parser, or choice, or hybrid games).

P.S. Just above the “Save” button there’s a “Summary” box. You could type something simple like “Parser” there (or otherwise describe your edit). Thanks.

To what extent do we need to play in order to classify something as a parser or not? If the first few turns are parser gameplay, can we mark it as parser, or do we need to continue playing to see if it becomes hybrid?

Already did for my own games. Could probably try and see if there are any others I’ve played and can be certain about.

That’s between you and your Maker, but I’d be happy with that. If you get it wrong I’m sure someone will come along eventually and fix it

I edited a game, but it still appears on the list of Probably Parser games. Is that normal?

They’re checkboxes. Make sure you only tick the ones you want.

Yes, as MediaWiki caches a lot, but I’ve just added a “no cache” instruction to that page to sort it out.

Another option is to click through to the IFDB page and check for a ClubFloyd transcript, and if there’s a transcript, glance at that to see if it looks like standard parser gameplay. But this is not required.

I edited my own game (Hand Me Down) and noticed the form would complain about errant | when actually a link was malformed. Drove me nuts for a little while.

Excellent – we allowed lists within the authoring system field to allow for the rare games that had been written using more than one. (We also decided only to have “HTML” when people actually wrote using just that rather than something like Twine, and then to have it as an authoring system rather than file format, despite it actually being a file format.)

What was the exact thing that made it complain about the stray | character? It’s maybe good that it’s fussy.

I believe. So no | to be found, but definitely malformed link markup.

Interesting. I’ve tried that out. It doesn’t complain when that is the only thing in the textarea. But when there are other things, themselves with the | character, it says:

“|” is not allowed, except within {{…}}, [[…]], or special tags

I can see that the message isn’t that helpful in all scenarios, and I’ll see if we can improve on it.

The reason is that the textarea fields are within this structure – {{template|parameter1=...|parameter2=...}}} – so stray | characters would cause confusion.

I’ve added a sentence to the standard error message. Now it says:

"|" is not allowed, except within {{...}}, [[...]], or special tags. Check that there are no mismatched brackets, e.g. [https://www.example.com Description]].

Happy with that?

Sounds great! Thanks for being reactive and diligent to issues!

Something a bit weird has been happening, after I mark a game as “Parser” and save the page, some parts of the Version section of the page (which I never modified) is changed and displaying a box like this:

This page has been archived

This template is still used by hundreds of game
pages, but we'd prefer you to enter IFIDs into the
IFID field at Form:Game when creating or editing
pages.

Oops. I had added a note to a template page, but forgot to ensure that the note doesn’t get included in content pages which use that template. I’ve fixed it now, I believe. Thanks for all the edits.

We only have 156 games left! The progress we made is nearly all because of @andrewj, who updated many hundreds of pages, so special thanks to him! It would be great if people with an interest in the following authoring systems or genres, or a memory of the specific games, could update the remaining wiki pages:

  • By authoring system, the games are mostly ADRIFT (over 100), followed by TADS (over 30), and some others (AGT, Alan, Hugo, PAW).

  • The vast majority of those with a literary genre listed are Porn/Erotica (nearly 100), and nearly 50 have no known genre.

The games are listed at IFWiki:Games currently classified as Probably Parser - IFWiki.

That’s awesome—thanks and well done to all involved (especially Andrew)!

I took a quick look to see if I could help out by knocking down a few more, but unfortunately all the games I’ve clicked so far have no working links to playable files… hopefully they haven’t been fully lost?

I think they probably are lost. I used the Wayback Machine to try to download most of the games with dead links, but the remaining ones are the ones which didn’t provide a usable download. I also searched IFarchive for a couple games with no luck, but there may be a few there.
