Doors: After Fixing the Dragons
At this point, be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus, to see what new areas you might be able to access.
Airlock outer door
You can’t open this door until after you’ve performed the Great Marriage and repaired Pneuma. (See “Fixing the Dragons.”)
Examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You’ll need to drink a vacuum-protection potion before opening this door. PERFORM VACUUM-PROTECTION. DRINK IT.
Once you’re protected from vacuum and Pneuma is fixed, you can GO TO THE AIRLOCK. PULL THE LEVER.
Tertiary Lab door
You can’t open this door until after you’ve performed the Great Marriage and repaired Pneuma. (See “Fixing the Dragons.”)
You can’t open this door until after you’ve opened the Exoscaphe hatch.
The key to this door is in the Exoscaphe Dome, which is UP from the Exoscaphe Hull.
You can open the Exoscaphe hatch by drinking a potion of vacuum resistance, but you can’t get out of the Exoscaphe afterwards unless you reset.
Examine your active dragon with the oculus.
Before pulling the lever in the Exoscaphe Hull, examine everything in the Scaphe Arcade.
EXAMINE THE WHEEL.
TURN THE WHEEL. It’s locked until Pneuma is repaired, but once Pneuma is repaired, the wheel turns freely; then you can GO WEST. GO UP. GET THE KEY. GO TO THE PYRICS LAB. GO SOUTH. GO EAST.
Secondary Alchemy Lab door
You’ll never need to open this door; use the Secondary Alchemy Lab hatch instead.
You can’t open this door until you’ve fixed Syndesis. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You can just open this door after you repair Syndesis.
Chymic Lab door
You’ll never need to open this door; use the Mechanica Lab door instead.
You can’t open this door until you’ve fixed Syndesis. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You can just open this door after you repair Syndesis.
Opticks closet door
You can’t open this door until you’ve fixed Syndesis. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You can just open this door after you repair Syndesis.
Deck Suite Venture door
You can’t open this door until you’ve fixed Syndesis. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You can just open this door after you repair Syndesis.
South Chasm Bridge
You can’t open this door until you’ve fixed Baros. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
You can just cross the bridge when you repair Baros.
Barosy crawlway
You can’t use the crawlway until you’ve fixed Baros. (See “Fixing the Dragons” above.) Be sure to examine your active dragon with the oculus.
The crawlway will just work when you repair Baros.
Alien airlock inner door
You can’t get past this door (you can’t go north from the Strange Airlock) until you open the Airlock outer door on the marcher.
Examine everything here in the Strange Airlock.
The arc in here is working. Try saying your new formulas to it.
SAY RADIX.
Now the door is open, but you can’t go north without resetting.
EXAMINE THE MARKS to get the “Crawlay Debris Item” fact. Here’s what it said originally: “This third symbol brings you a new image: a sheet of paper, buried in rubble. Again, the scene is familiar… a crack in a wall… the crawlway under the Nave. You do your best to memorize the paper’s exact location.”
GO TO THE NAVE CRAWLWAY. SEARCH THE DEBRIS. GET THE SHEET.
You can use the Aither-Resistance ritual to survive going north from the Strange Airlock.
-
How do I perform Aither-Resistance?
You’ll need an exhilarant environment (kelp impet in the Deck Suite), saline (in the Chymic lab), zafranum (from the Herbarium nook), the torch-lighter (from Under Ward), salt from the Mechanica Lab, and the Chi formula from Burning Hall East (after the inferno, before the obsidian door).
OPEN THE KELP. PUT SALINE IN THE BOUND. SAY HERMETIC. PUT ZAFRANUM IN THE BOUND. BURN IT WITH THE LIGHTER. SAY ANODYNE. PUT SALT ON THE SHELF. SAY CHI. DRINK IT.
But there’s a problem. The Metal Attractor requires burning zafranum, too. If you use the Metal Attractor to get the F sharp chime for the Glass Permeability ritual, you can’t perform Aither-Resistance and use it on the same reset.
So don’t use Glass Permeability.
Use the marcher’s Airlock instead.
RESET. PERFORM VACUUM-PROTECTION. DRINK IT. PERFORM AITHER-RESISTANCE. DRINK IT. GO TO THE AIRLOCK. PULL THE LEVER. GO NORTH. GO TO THE WRECK. IN. GO NORTH.
Window in alien wreck
You can’t do this until you’ve opened the Tertiary Lab door.
You have to use Aither-Resistance to get to this window, but that uses up saffron that you’d need to get the F-sharp chime for Glass Permeability.
You have to get the F sharp chime without using any zafranum.
Here’s what the message said when you tried to get the F-sharp chime without the metal attractor. “You step out on the slab, and kneel at the balance-point. But when you lean forward, the entire thing shifts under your weight. You pull yourself back before the slab completely unbalances.”
You need something to hold the slab down while you grab the F-sharp chime. What’s the word for an object like that?
You need a counterweight.
There’s a counterweight in the observatory. You need to bring it to the F-sharp chime and put it on the slab.
Experiment with your lead weight increase/decrease rituals on the counterweight.
Also try experimenting with the dispersal brush together with the increase/decrease rituals.
You can lower the ladder by increasing the weight of the counterweight, but that’s not the only way to do it. (Read carefully when you increase the weight of the counterweight.)
“The shock has evidently been too much for the jammed mechanism.”
You can shock the mechanism without making the counterweight heavier. (In the next hint, I’ll give a large hint on how to solve this puzzle.)
You need to perform a lead weight increase and then perform a lead weight decrease without resetting.
-
How can I perform both an increase and decrease without resetting?
Each time you perform increase or decrease, it uses up elemental earth, as you make either Gaian Precipitate or Counter-Gaian Precipitate. How can you avoid this?
To perform both, you’ll need to find a substitute for either Gaian Precipitate or Counter-Gaian Precipitate.
There’s something lying around that would be a suitable Counter-Gaian Precipitate substitute.
You might need to use your dictionary or thesaurus to figure out what this is.
“Tellurian” means “Gaian” and “distillate” means the same thing as “precipitate,” so the anti-Tellurian distillate is a good substitute for counter-Gaian distillate.
Perform the Decrease ritual with the distillate, then perform the Increase ritual with counter-Gaian precipitate.
-
How do I perform the Decrease ritual with the distillate?
PUT THE HORN COIN ON THE SHELF. PUT THE SANDSTONE IN THE BOUND. SAY SIMPLE. WAVE THE ROSEMARY. SAY ESSENTIAL. PUT DISTILLATE IN THE BOUND. SAY CELESTIAL.
-
Now experiment again with your decrease, increase, and the dispersal brush.
If you decrease the counterweight, and then touch it with the brush, that shocks the mechanism and lowers the ladder.
But you’ll need to decrease the counterweight to carry it to the F-sharp chime. (In the next hint, I’ll tell you exactly how to do it.)
Assuming the granite is increase (ponderosity) and sandstone is decrease (gossamerity): TOUCH THE WEIGHT WITH GRANITE. TOUCH THE WEIGHT WITH THE BRUSH. TOUCH THE WEIGHT WITH THE SANDSTONE. GET THE WEIGHT. GO TO THE F SHARP CHIME. PUT THE WEIGHT ON THE SLAB. TOUCH THE WEIGHT WITH THE BRUSH. GET THE CHIME.
Now you have everything you need! PERFORM VACUUM-PROTECTION. DRINK IT. PERFORM AITHER-RESISTANCE. DRINK IT. PERFORM GLASS PERMEABILITY. GO TO THE STRANGE AIRLOCK. SAY RADIX. GO NORTH. GO EAST. STRIKE THE CHIME. TOUCH THE WINDOW WITH THE CHIME. GO NORTH.
Goal: After Fixing the Dragons
Once you’ve opened the doors above, read the sheet in the Nave, and/or RECALL THE DRAGON REANIMATION ATTEMPT fact.
Now you have to perform the Great Marriage in the Chancel.
Getting into the Chancel uses up your elements. Extinguishing the inferno uses up elemental fire. Opening the obsidian door uses up elemental earth. opening the Chancel gate uses up elemental water. And entering the Medical Wing to get elemental air uses up orichalcum that you need to perform aura imitation. So your new objective is to get into the Chancel without using up those elements.
-
How do I enter the Chancel with elemental air?
The quartz Aura Imitation uses orichalcum (in the form of copper percalcinate), but you need to use orichalcum to enter the Medical Wing. You’ll need to switch to the jade Aura Imitation.
-
How do I perform the Aura Imitation with jade?
You’ll need “a meditative environment based on the Book of Changes,” a bead of iron (from the Mechanica Lab), a bead of jade, burning wood (I suggest elemental wood from the Pyrics Lab and the torch-lighter from Under Ward), elemental air, and the Name of the Tortoise.
-
How do I make the meditative environment?
Look up the “Book of Changes” with Google. It’s also known as the I Ching.
You’ve seen something Chinese on the marcher, with I Ching symbols on it.
RECALL I CHING. The Chinese amulet in the Study Room is perfect for this.
-
Where do I find the Name of the Tortoise?
If you’ve examined everything carefully, you’ve seen a hard to reach piece of paper near the marcher.
Examine everything carefully near the Exoscaphe.
Examine everything carefully in the North Arcade.
EXAMINE THE WINDOW.
“There seems to be a bit of paper lying at the far end of the bay.” The Name of the Tortoise is there.
This window is just like the one in the Portico.
You’ll need Vacuum Protection and Glass Permeability to pass through.
PERFORM VACUUM PROTECTION. DRINK IT. PERFORM GLASS PERMEABILITY. GO TO SCAPHE ARCADE. GO NORTH. STRIKE F SHARP. TOUCH WINDOW WITH F SHARP. GO WEST. GET SHEET. GO EAST.
-
Where do I find the bead of jade?
Examine the active dragon with the oculus.
“alignment repairs in the garden maze and the cracks by the chasm”.
You can now GO EAST from Confusing Cracks. The jade is there.
Now you should have everything you need! GO TO THE NAVE. PUT THE RIBBON ON THE SHELF. PUT THE IRON AND THE JADE IN THE BOUND. SAY SIMPLE. BURN ELEMENTAL WOOD WITH LIGHTER. PUT ELEMENTAL WOOD ON SHELF. SAY TORTOISE. PUT ELEMENTAL AIR IN THE BOUND. SAY CHI.
-
The Aura Imitation with jade doesn’t entirely solve the problem, because it consumes elemental air. But now that you’ve fixed the dragons, you have a way to deal with this.
The Opticks Closet has a dusty bubble, just like the scratched bubble in the Medical Workroom.
You can take the dusty bubble into the Medical Wing and fill both bubbles on your way out.
GO TO THE DUSTY BUBBLE. GET IT. GO TO THE SCRATCHED BUBBLE. GET IT. GO WEST. FILL THE DUSTY BUBBLE WITH THE TANK. FILL THE SCRATCHED BUBBLE WITH THE TANK. PERFORM JADE IMITATION. Now you have a working Aura Imitation and a bubble of elemental air left over.
-
-
How do I enter the Chancel with elemental earth?
RECALL FACTS. You might have overlooked the “Perfect Diamond Substitution” fact, which was on the back of the dry sheet in the Exoscaphe Dome. “A perfectly flawless diamond may sometimes substitute for elemental earth, particularly when synthesizing caustic reagents.”
Perform the Perfect Diamond ritual.
-
How do I perform the Perfect Diamond ritual?
You’ll need a diamond (from the Main Store), elemental earth, and a note in the mode of ostension. You’ll need to perform this ritual “an environment influenced only by living stone; the deeper and purer, the better.”
-
Where do I find a note in the mode of ostension?
RECALL MUSICAL THEORY.
“G-flat is the mode of ostension.” RECALL G-FLAT. GO TO IT. GET IT.
-
Where do I find the environment?
You want a deep lab.
The Deep Lab, west of the Deep Stacks, is a perfect fit.
Now you should have everything you need! GO TO THE DEEP LAB. PUT THE DIAMOND IN THE BOUND. SAY PHLEGMATIC. STRIKE THE G-FLAT CHIME. PUT ELEMENTAL EARTH ON THE SHELF. SAY CRYSTALLINE. GET ALL.
-
Now you can try to use the perfect diamond instead of elemental earth in one of the rituals you need to enter the Chancel.
You used the elemental earth creating the obsidian solvent. Redo that ritual with the diamond instead of earth.
-
What are the exact steps for this?
PUT MURIATIC ACID AND BAMURIATIC ACID IN THE RETORT. SAY HERMETIC. PUT THE DIAMOND IN THE RETORT. SAY ANAPHYLAXIS. PUT MARBLE IN THE RETORT. SAY ANTIPATHY.
-
-
How do I enter the Chancel with elemental fire?
You’ll need to create another rod of elemental fire before you perform the Fire-Devourer ritual.
Perform the Electrum Phlogistication ritual.
-
How do I perform the Electrum Pholgistication ritual?
You’ll need electrum regium, a catalytic environment, and yang oil (from the ritual in the Dressing Room).
-
How do I make electrum regium?
The ritual says it’s “an alloy of platinum and moon-metal.” The platinum rod is in the Mechanica Lab, and the moon-metal rod is in the Materials Store.
There’s a device on the marcher than can take two metals and make an alloy.
It’s the wire-splicer in the Mechanica Lab.
MAKE PLATINUM WIRE. MAKE MOON-METAL WIRE. PUT PLATINUM AND MOON-METAL IN THE SPLICER. TURN THE WHEEL.
-
How do I make a catalytic environment after making electrum regium?
The electrum regium consumes your platinum. But haven’t you seen another platinum bound on the marcher?
The Tertiary Alchemy Lab has a catalytic platinum bound. Use that bound.
-
How do I make Yang Oil?
You’ll need mineral oil (from the Chymic Lab), “a sweet floral element,” and reed pith (from the Pyrics Lab). You may have a hard time reciting the Phlogistical Catalysis while the reed pith burns.
-
Where do I find a sweet floral element?
Where are the plants on the marcher?
Look in the Herbarium Nook.
Use the honeysuckle.
Waving it won’t suffice.
CRUSH THE HONEYSUCKLE during the ritual.
-
How do I recite the Phlogistical Catalysis while the reed pith burns?
When you burn the reed pith, it’s consumed instantly.
This is the opposite of the problem you had with the blackwood.
Burn the pith with something else that doesn’t burn as hot.
Try burning the other splints and see what happens when you burn the splints with them. (Be sure to burn the splints with the torch-lighter and not the gas burners in the Pyrics lab, which burns much hotter.)
If you burn the green linden with the torch-lighter, it won’t burn up right away. If you burn the reed pith with the linden, it won’t burn up right away.
That should be all you need to make Yang Oil! GO TO THE TERTIARY LAB. PUT MINERAL OIL IN THE BOUND. SAY PHLEGMATIC. CRUSH THE HONEYSUCKLE. SAY ESSENTIAL. PUT PITH IN THE BOUND. BURN THE LINDEN WITH THE LIGHTER. BURN THE PITH WITH THE LINDEN. SAY CATALYSIS.
-
And that should be all you need to phlogisticate electrum! GO TO THE TERTIARY LAB. PUT THE ELECTRUM IN THE BOUND. SAY SIMPLE. PUT YANG OIL IN THE BOUND. SAY ELEMENTARY. GET THE ELECTRUM.
-
Duplicate the fire like this: PERFORM GOLD IGNITION. BURN ELECTRUM WITH ELEMENTAL FIRE. PERFORM FIRE-DEVOURER. Now you have the devourer and a spare rod of elemental fire.
-
-
How do I enter the Chancel with elemental water?
The quartz Aura Imitation uses elemental water. You’ll need to switch to the jade Aura Imitation.
It turns out that you’ll need to do this anyway so that you can enter the Chancel with elemental air, so see the above question, “How do I enter the Chancel with elemental air?”
With that done, you should be able to bring all four elements into the Chancel, like this. RESET. GO TO THE DUSTY BUBBLE. GET IT. GO TO THE SCRATCHED BUBBLE. GET IT. GO WEST. FILL THE DUSTY BUBBLE WITH THE TANK. FILL THE SCRATCHED BUBBLE WITH THE TANK. PERFORM JADE IMITATION. GO TO THE CAPTAIN. TOUCH THE CAPTAIN WITH THE JADE. PERFORM GOLD IGNITION. PERFORM ELECTRUM PHLOGISTICATION. BURN ELECTRUM WITH ELEMENTAL FIRE. GO TO ELEMENTAL WATER. GET IT. PERFORM OBSIDIAN SOLVENT WITH DIAMOND. GO TO BURNING HALL. GO EAST. PUT SOLVENT ON THE DOOR. GO EAST. TOUCH THE JADE. GO NORTH. From then on, you can just RESET. GO TO THE CHANCEL and you’ll bring air, earth, and fire with you. (You can enter and exit the Chancel freely to fetch water, the ephemeris billet, and rosemary.)
Now that you’ve brought all four elements into the chancel, you’ll also need to MAKE THE BILLET and bring rosemary into the Chancel.
You know what to do now, right? (Or do you?)
-
What are the exact commands to run in the Chancel?
PUT THE THICK KEY ON THE SHELF. SAY MARCHER. PUT BILLET ON SHELF. WAVE ROSEMARY. PUT THE AIR AND EARTH AND FIRE AND WATER IN THE BOUND. SAY DRACON.
-
It says “nothing has changed.” Why?
“It’s like spinning a wheel that’s not touching the ground.” It’s a distinctly physical, mechanical metaphor being used here.
You need to make another Dragon Fulcrum and put it in any dragon’s lair.
-
I can’t make a Dragon Fulcrum. “The glyphs that you have learned no longer seem to work.”
Use the DOORS command.
You have learned three glyphs, but you need four, and the fourth is behind the “alien airlock inner door,” and then behind the “Window in alien wreck.” See those doors above.
Once you have the fourth glyph, you can create your last fulcrum.
PERFORM FULCRUM. GO TO THE MAZE CENTER. DROP THE GRANITE. Then go perform the Great Marriage. Well, except perhaps one last thing.
-
-
What should I do when it says “You were buried in wreckage?”
GO UP.
GO OUT.
SAY SIMPLE.
There are multiple endings to explore.
The most satisfying difference has to do with whether you acted on the “Wreck Debris Indicator” fact, given to you when you acquired the fourth alien glyph in the Ruined Chamber behind the window.
-
What should I do with the Wreck Debris Indicator?
“The polar oil will react if poured over the ceramic debris outside the wreck.” The polar oil is in in the niche in the wreck. (In the next hint, I’ll provide the exact commands required to use it.)
RESET. GO TO THE WRECK. GET THE MERCURY. PUT IT ON THE ARC. SAY RADIX. PUT THE OIL ON THE DEBRIS.
The Calyx Access Pattern “has the odor of dragons about it.”
Go to the awakened dragon (in its starting location) and SAY CALYX.
“You sense… something… radiating from the dragon, although you can’t see anything.”
You need to see more clearly.
LOOK THROUGH THE OCULUS. EXAMINE THE SPARK WITH THE OCULUS. (The game calls it a “glint” but it’s really a “spark.”)
Now you can make an intensional ballast and plant it before you finish the game.
-
How do I make an intensional ballast?
As it says, start by performing the Universal Tarnish Cleansing, then follow the new instructions. You’ll need a catalytic environment (the Tertiary Lab), a token (either the brass pin or the steel bolt), Java (lubanja), and zafranum.
GO TO THE TERTIARY LAB. PUT THE BRASS PIN IN THE BOUND. SAY SIMPLE. SAY CATEGORICAL. PUT JAVA IN THE BOUND. PUT ZAFRANUM IN THE BOUND. SAY GREATER. GET PIN.
Now you have to put it in the right place.
-
Where shall I put the intensional ballast?
RECALL FACTS. RECALL EXTENDED STATUS REPORT.
It glows when it’s in the right place.
There are actually multiple right places. The status report will suggest a different place depending on which dragon is awake, but you can put it in any valid place, no matter which dragon you got.
-
Aistheta
Aistheta advises that you put the ballast “below the observatory.”
You can put the ballast in Observatory Crawlspace, Flooded, which is one step DOWN from the Observatory.
-
Baros
Baros advises that you put the ballast “within the crevice.”
You can put the ballast in the Barosy Crevice, NORTH of the Barosy.
-
Pneuma
Pneuma advises that you put the ballast “below the garden.”
You can put the ballast in the Garden Pool, DOWN from the Paper Garden.
-
Syndesis
Unfortunately, this one is buggy. Syndesis advises that you put the ballast “below the Birdhouse.” Presumably it was intended to allow you to put the ballast in the Birdhouse Crawl, but there’s no way to get into the Birdhouse Crawl without using Aura Imitation, consuming one of the elements you’d need to win.
Instead, you can put your ballast in any of the other three locations above. Syndesis doesn’t care whether the ballast is in the Birdhouse Crawl, as long as it’s in one of the accepted places.
-
-
-
I’m too lazy to check. What does the Wreck Debris Indicator change in the ending?
It’s very subtle, in the last paragraph before the very end. Without the ballast, the ending says:
> say simple
You will have no assurance that this can possibly work. An apprentice bringing a marcher back to life… but still.*** You will begin ***
With the ballast, the ending says:
> say simple
An apprentice bringing a marcher back to life… it should not be possible. But you will have a notion, a fragment of memory, that help will arrive. Repairs will be made.*** You will begin ***
You also get one of eight ending paragraphs in “You have crawled into a ruined corridor,” depending on which dragon you awaken first and how you choose to examine the corresponding character. (Aistheta = Ctesc, Baros = Powes, Pneuma = Anderes, Syndesis = Captain Hart). Each time you examine the character aligned with your dragon, the game switches between two perspectives, saying, “Your perspective has changed.” Your perspective on the character corresponding to your awakened dragon will slightly modify the paragraph in “You have crawled into a ruined corridor.”
-
Here’s the various ending paragraphs.
-
Aistheta awakened, Ctesc primary
-
Positive: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Could Ctesc have caused this? All those books you liberated for him… he promised that you’d share any secrets he found. But he’s always been the type to experiment first, report later. Maybe if you find him.
-
Negative: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Could Ctesc have caused this? All those books you liberated for him… he promised that you’d share any secrets he found. But you might have underestimated his greed. Maybe if you find him.
-
-
Baros awakened, Powes primary
-
Positive: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. This must be Powes’ fault. All the time you’ve spent setting him up for a fall, he must have been trying to set you up… you wouldn’t have believed it of him. But surely he couldn’t have intended this catastrophe.
-
Negative: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. This must be Powes’ fault. All the time you’ve spent setting him up for a fall, he must have been trying to set you up… you’ve always known he would. But surely he couldn’t have intended this catastrophe.
-
-
Syndesis awakened, Captain primary
-
Positive: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Where could Ashe… could the Captain be? Not looking for you; whatever you’ve shared, whatever she’s thought of you, the marcher takes precedence. She’ll have gone for the Aithery, or for the Chancel.
-
Negative: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Where could Ashe… could the Captain be? Not looking for you; you’ve never deluded yourself that she shared that much of herself with you. She’ll have gone for the Aithery, or for the Chancel.
-
-
Pneuma awakened, Anderes primary
-
Positive: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Could this be Anderes’ fault? All the reagents you’ve liberated for her… but she’s always so careful when she stashes them. No profit in broken glass.
-
Negative: Your cleaning work in the alchemy lab… no. Not important. Could this be Anderes’ fault? All the reagents you’ve liberated for her… if she’s been careless with them, you’ll be furious. No profit in broken glass.
