Ectocomp2024 is live!

This would make a great album title.
EDIT: especially for B-sides and rarities.

Thought I had an idea, and thought ā€œit’s only 4 hours, surely I have no excuse not to enter.ā€ But the deadline is nearing, and I’m realizing that I don’t really have a game idea, or even a story idea, just more of a setting idea with no real gameplay hook or satisfying narrative. : (

Usually my goto advice for everyone is to wait and make sure you have plenty of time to develope your game and make it great.

But not Ectocomp Petite Morte. Petite morte is great for ideas you just want to kick around, and it has no real expectations. Good games can get entered, but bad games can be more fun; and even if your game places last it can be useful to see how you felt about the little game you made and give you ideas to make better stuff. I had one game I made for ectocomp that was just a conversation system with a barebones setting and the gameplay was just ā€˜say two things and it ends’, but I ended up developing that system into a whole series of later games. That original game placed in the bottom half of ectocomp, but the new ones placed higher in big competitions.

So I think if you wanted to just make your setting into a game with just the most barebones ā€˜click the link to see what happens with a few occasional branches’ gameplay, no state tracking, and just seeing characters vibe and interact, I think it could be very fun and helpful for you! It’s only hard or bad if you care if people like it as a game, but I don’t think that’s what Petite Morte is all about necessarily; a game that places last that you learn from and grow from as an author is better than a first place game that you just forget about as soon as it’s over.

I’ve just sent a reminder email to all participants in the comp, but I will repeat it here, excuse the spam:

Just a quick reminder that the comp ends just before Halloween. Remember, all games must be ready before October 31st. So that gives us 4 completely days to wrap up our entries, or even create a new one for La petite mort.

Check the main web page, it gives the countdown in your local time.

Hurry up!

Regards.

Ruber.

I think I’ve figured out how to make the state tracking and progression do what I want them to. Hopefully I’ll be able to wrap things up today and find a tester or two.

I don’t think I’m going to have the time or energy to style things up too much, so if anyone asks, totally an informed creative decision.

Can you confirm whether I’ve properly submitted Familiar Problems to the Grand Guignol? I think I have, but I can’t find anywhere on the jam page that actually confirms it.

EDIT: Of course, as soon as I post this, I find it. Look on the top right of the game page, not on the jam page.

Woohoo! I am actually going to get a Petite mort AND a Grand Guignol in. Although my GG is very short, so not very grand. It feels great to actually finish a few small things this year. I am so rusty with disuse.

At least for me, the submission flag mentioned above only shows on Desktop, not Mobile.

That’s just how Itch works. Do you have your phone in portrait or landscape mode? Portrait mode won’t show any flags. Landscape mode should

Something’s coming…
Cover art for "do not let your left hand know". Two left hands reach out towards each other - one from the upper left corner, one from the bottom right. The one on the bottom right has its knuckles bruised and bleeding, with bits of glass embedded in them. In the middle is the logo of the game - "Do NOT Let Your Left Hand Know", written in shaky handwriting.

This is the cover for my meager attempt. I am just proud to be in Ectocomp 2024!

I’m not creative, the fireboat image is courtesy of Adobe Stock.

This doesn’t look scary at all. Probably nothing to worry about!
