Early development of my own game - TerrAdapt

Hi everyone!

I’m new to the forum, and to IF itself too!.

I hope this was the right tag to use and it’s also okay to post about this. I’ve posted a couple of times on Reddit but found out about this forum the other

I’ve been developing my own text-based multiple choice interactive fiction game set a few hundred years after a global radiation event forced humanity into orbit. The story follows a small research crew at TerrAdapt Site D-14, a base near the Dover cliffs in the UK - now glowing with bioluminescent fungi and mutated plant life.

Here’s a little snippet of the introduction to the game.

Earth.

The Blue Planet.

What was once full of bustling metropolitan cities before it became an irradiated cesspit. For every new technological advance, the sieverts climbed – invisible but deadly.

The elite ignored the hair loss and lesions on the homeless. Far below their skyscrapers and elevated gardens the truth slowly seeped further and deeper. It poisoned the ground until the ground could no longer hide it. As the poor took the hit the elite started working, not for a cure, not to reverse the damage but to flee. Amongst the stars held their salvation, stations sent into orbit and expanded for life to flourish whilst the rest of the race died off one by one.

I’d love to know if people think that might be something that would want to play.

I got some really amazing engagement on the Reddit posts I’ve done and people seemed interested so, I’ve been working away hard and I’m making some great headway.

Am I allowed to share my Patreon? I read through the code of conduct and saw about linking adult content (it’s not) and other peoples work (it’s also not that either!) but obviously I don’t want to break any rules.

If anyone is interested, please let me know!

I’d play it. If you’re trying to get attention for something you eventually intend to be commercial or some sort of grey zone, it might be worthwhile to write a smaller free game that introduces your premise and writing style and enter it into one of the Comps and Jams run through out the year. This will get your work seen by more eyes and also give you valuable feedback on how you might improve your craft.

Once you have some attention, you might get somewhere with the commercial end, just be aware successful monetization is notoriously an uphill battle in IF. As for posting your Patreon, I don’t recall any rule against it. Feel free. If I’m wrong, I’m sure a Mod will set me straight soon enough.

Out of curiosity, what toolset are you using, Twine? There are several well-established ways to create a text-based multiple choice IF game.

Hiya, thanks so much for all of this! For me it’s about making it my only income - I absolutely still have a day job but if i get a bit from it, that’s also pretty cool. And the competition is an amazing idea, I will definitely check it out, thank you. I was actually thinking about writing a little game about a mouse and putting it on somewhere like itch io for free.

I’m actually using ChoiceScript, I did consider Twine but I think for what I’m trying to achieve and do, for my first time writing and learning this kind of coding (any coding really, never done anything like- I’m an excel formula kinda gal!) CS was a better option.
